Can the Stormers do it?

The Stormers face the Rebels this morning, and all concerned will be calling for a big win by the Stormers, as a victory for the men from Cape Town is inevitable. Let’s take a look where the game will be won or lost, and we can compare notes afterwards.

The first thing that jumps to mind when thinking of the Rebels is that they cannot tackle to save their bacon, and the statistics back this as they are the worst defending team in terms of missed tackles, dropping of an average of 18 a game. This is compounded by the fact that they are the most penalised team when it comes to scrum time.

The Stormers are the third best defending team in terms of missed tackles, and they themselves aren’t the best scrummaging unit, so it will make for an interesting battle come scrum time. Defence against the Rebels should not be a problem for the Stormers, but the same cannot be said for the Rebels who will have to contend with the red hot centre combination of Jean de Villiers and Jacque Fourie.

An interesting point to note is the fact that the Stormers are the best team in the competition when taking the ball into the ruck situation and retaining it, whereas the Rebels find themselves losing the ball at ruck time more often than not, being the team to with the most lost possessions at ruck time.

Where the Stormers do come up short is when looking at handling errors, but one has to consider that the Rebels have a lot less of the ball to make handling errors with than the Stormers, so this is relative to the amount of possession each team has.

In summary, the Rebels’ leaky defence will not be able to withstand the Stormers, and even they are not the team with the most attacking prowess, one has to look at the opposition and think that the tries will have to come. Should the Stormers not be able to score tries against the Rebels, which team will they be able to do it against, especially come play off time.

  • I know we’re not supposed to back fellow SA teams in the new S15 format but I hope the Stormers smash these wannabes.

  • If Jennifer Capriati is playing we’ll score 4 tries or more.

Her defense is worse than Earl’s.

  • Quite simply it is a joke that this misfit team from Melbourne is even allowed to complete. The ARU have completely shot themselves in the foot by further diluting their small talent base.

  • If the Stormers had their first choice flyhalf we all would have said that they will smash the Rebels. They should still win this one comfortably but doubt they will pick up 5 points.

  • If the Stormers pitch with anything close to their ‘A’ game, the Rebels are in for a hiding of note.

Complacency & one foot on the plane attitude are my biggest & only concerns.

  • @Salmonoid (Comment 7) : But the Stormers wiped the floor with us on two occasions so they shouldn`t break a sweat against the Rebels.

Here`s hoping Rose gets at least 30 minutes!!!

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 19) : Only saw the 2nd half.

Stormers did the job. Scored some nice tries, but never really got out of 3rd gear. Still too many handling errors imo.

Rebels are pretty poor, just in case there was any doubt.
