It was a busy weekend of School Boy Rugby and our correspondents out at the games and in the know have come back with the following results. I would like to thank beet and Poisy for their help and input in gathering this info.

First up is a bit of a surprise as Westville lost to Northern Natal school Pionier on Saturday, with Pionier coming up trumps 26 – 22.

Northwood 8 – 21 Kearsney

Maritzburg College 40 – 21 Michaelhouse

Durban North College 31 – 17 Queensburgh Boys High

Hilton College 54 – 12 St Albans

Wartburg 12 – 3 St Henry’s Marist Brothers

Sarel Cilliers 40 – 0 Dundee High

Port Natal 24 – 8 Voortrekker

Empangeni High 34 – 8 Hoerskool Richards Baai

DHS 24 – 12 St Charles

If you have any other results and would like to contribute, you can email me – [email protected]

  • Haha my cousin went on that Vryheid tour for Westville. Let’s say I know why they played so lethargically ;) one being the entire open division showing their unhappiness with the food by walking up at 2am to walk 2km to the nearest KFC the night before the match among other reasons.

  • In fairness Poisy’s team was taking their umpteenth rest Saturday this season and he had nothing else to do. I’d like to see Sharksworld downgrade his thanx to a “ta” or “yo” or even a “hey”.
If fact I would go so far as to say thanx Beet and a. nother.
Poisy: Your team is the one in green. The Glenwood 1st team games are so far apart this season, it’s easy to forget who they are. Jokes.

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 11) : IMO I think it was the site of the opposite sex ( Pionier is a co-ed) that distacted them. Aaaah the days of rugby tours. I think most of my school boy memories revolve around those 12 hour train trips to Johannesburg.

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 5) : Definitely a surprise result because Affies have been handing out whippings to good schools this season. However Noord Kaap of Kimberley are unbeaten in 2011. Their pack is believed to weigh +/- 850kgs. I think they also have a few more u19 players than other schools. To put their pack size into perceptive, KZN’s top 4 Westville, Glenwood, Kearsney and M/College have packs that vary between 740kg and 770kg depending on selections, but usually avg around 750kg

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 14) : The rules state that if a bona fide schoolboy turns 19 in matric he is allowed to play. Schools open age group is actually u19. They however managed to get rid of the incentive for players to stay back a year like in the old days (pre-2008) by only allowing boys who turn 18 in matric (u18) to play at Craven Week.
A recent example of this is Dwayne Kelly. To me he was the best player in KZN SBR last year aside from Pat Howard, but coz he turned 19 late in the yr, he was ineligible for C/W. The Sharks picked him up for C/C u19 duty.

  • @Beet #15. While I understand the reason for doing that in the end it unfairly penalises the player. When my son was in grd R we were told that he was not mature enough to keep him back a year a decision that academically was spot on as now he is in the top 5 students in his grade but having been selected in the 1st xv he was so excited only to find that because he had turned 13 in Dec he isn’t allowed to play. He is so frustrated and is now counting the days to leave Merchiston to get into College so he can play Rugby again only it will happen all over again to him in GRD 12 :(

  • Hi KSA not allowed to play for the school they don’t even let him train with the team, after fitness he ends up carrying tackle bags cause obviously they train the team that will play in the matches (sp? ) he is really frustrated. He wasn’t selected for midlands. He loves rugby and is good but in pmb there is no U13 rugby club where he can play

  • KSA that it does! But only 5 more months and he will be in M. College so all should be well again I just feel that that ruling unjustly penalises boys that are a year behind for genuine reasons.

  • @Sharksmad – The Blog’s Dudette (Comment 23) :Sadly the rules are never perfect. For instance if a kid is born on 31 December 1997 and his school friend one day later, they are treated differently. In NZ they actually use size (weight) to determine the group that you fall into. It’s little wonder when you see the sizes of some of the Polynesian kids.
I stand to be corrected but I think this u14 rule is different in the W/Cape. Kids there are allowed to play at primary school if turning 14, making this a KZN ruling and not a national one like the high school rule. Paarlbok will know.
The sort of good news is that your son won’t be disadvantaged in the same way in high school. He will be allowed to play in his matric year. Nevertheless if he is good, he will have to make the most of his gr.11 year for provincial selection. Unfortunately that does help you now. Not only will your son have to jump to u15 next year, he’s lost this year as well.

  • @beet (Comment 24) : I asked a DPHS parent with a son in the KZN u13 team how they handle the boys turning 14 this year.

He has indicated that at DPHS, these kids are allowed to play for whatever high school they will be attending the following year. Not an ideal situation but if a boy really enjoys his rugby it’s the way to go.

Lots of Merchiston boys end up at College. It’s a pity your son wasn’t allowed to play for the school. I’m sure there’d have been many familiar faces there to make him feel more at ease.

  • @Villie (Comment 27) : I’ve watched 3 Dale games this season. They play very attractive rugby. Very slick handling and smart attacking backs. Perhaps not the biggest kids on the block but right up there with the sharpest.

  • @Villie (Comment 29) : Yes Villie. Actually their pack weighed over 800kg last year as well and I think they had a few more u19s (including talented captain Matt Williams who’s now with the Sharks Acad.) than this season. IMO what’s better about them this year is their utilisation of the backline.

Afterall he has been accepted as a student there for 2010 and I have already paid the acceptace fee to secure his place there so in effect he is one their students ;)

  • @Villie (Comment 32) : Yes the hooker Simanga is an impressive unit. My only concern is that like Siyabonga Ntubeni, the Stormers 19 year old hooker who was once upon a time also at Dale before KES poached (for Megatron’s benefit this is the correct use of the term poach) him, he is a bit on the short side. My guestimates are often way out but he looks about 1.72m. Him and outside centre are stong candidates for SA schools. The Dale no.15 and no.6 (Bucholtz) are also good. Personally my favourite player is the scrumhalf and captain. He’s a skinny guy, u19 this year but to me he’s the glue that makes the team stick. He has speed, a decent pass and a get out of jail base kick as well as a good place kick. He’s name is Bangi Kobese. He was SA Schools in 2009. Not sure what happened last year.

I did however attend the Reunion game against Queens a couple of weeks ago and Kobese had an absolute shocker. However it can happen to anyone and I know he is a quality player and very highly rated. Star player on the day was the Dale fullback. Bucholz also had a very good game.

The Queens number 8 was top quality too. A big chap.

its pretty impossible to contract all the best talent coming through, but still KZN youngsters should be prefered to other provinces.

  • @Villie (Comment 54) : No I don’t know Dave Knowles. This Friday is my 20th reunion. He came after I’d finished school and now there are probably 3 masters left that I know.

Don’t worry. Coming from a school that used forms not standards e.g. Form 6 = Standard 10 (=grade 12), it took me ages to get use to the Grade thing myself. Once you’re back in SA, presumably with those millions of GBP that you’re planning to use to start an accredited Varsity so that we can hang onto players, you’ll soon get the hang of it.

  • @sharks_lover (Comment 50) : When I asked Hans Scriba about Ungerer, he said that the contract between him and the Bulls wasn’t binding after school. It seemed a bit odd but that’s apparently the deal. So the Sharks Academy haven’t given up hope. However during the same festival, I heard from another source that knows the Ungerer family (who apparently are not Sharks supporters), that he’s as good as gone come the end of the year. Hopefully he was wrong and a deal can be sorted out.

  • Guys, yes, some of the Westville seniors did go to KFC, but that was NOT our 1st team players. Once again, the ref ,was shocking(to put it mildly). What is new in Schools Rugby(refeering)? All in all Westville played really good rugby on the day,but robbed by questionable decisions!!!!

  • @Tracy Boulle (Comment 68) : Hi Tracy thanks for the comment.

I have learnt a few truths in life as I was raised and raised (am still raising) my own children.

Truth #1. It wasn’t us, we weren’t even there.

Truth #2. We just happened to be there we had nothing to do with it.

Truth #3. We have no idea why he/she got upset with us we were just standing there talking to each other.

(2 & 3 not relevant here but true nonetheless)

And along the way while watching the odd match, the odd truth about that game has hit home as well.

Rugby Truth #1. We wuz robbed.

Rugby Truth #2. Why did he not penalize them for the same thing?

  • @Tracy Boulle (Comment 68) : Hi Tracy. Yes maybe a few first team players were not involved the nocturnal activities. I did see photographs with many of the 1st team in them, thus can back up my claim that some did join the group. According to my source it goes way more than sneaking to KFC. . . . . I believe the players are responsible for their own actions and decisions and ultimately the outcome that results from it.

Secondly yes I hear the Ref was a shocker.

  • Vryheid has got a Kentucky that stays open after 2 AM?
It must have grown since my days. Now if they said they went to a Shebeen then Im sure they could find many that were still open.

  • @Salmonoid (Comment 72) : I am shocked they even have a KFC. I taught in Vryheid they go hunting for their food.

  • @Villie (Comment 70) : No I don’t know Deon Boshoff either. I even asked Mr socialiser from our Old Boys committee. He doesn’t know him either.

  • @Mocho (Comment 71) : Gee Mocho, now you have sources. What’s next a name change to MochoDylan?
Before you know it you’ll be withholding “in the general public’s best interests” player exodus information for extraordinary lengths of time.
