The inside info, straight from the Lion’s den…

There’s not much that will tempt me into the heart of Jozies at the best of times. But in what felt like an onslaught from the heavens, with freezing temperatures, howling winds and several attempts at what South Africans call snow and I call sleet, I resisted the urge to stay in bed with a rerun of the 2010 Currie Cup final and did my bit for the glorious game of rugby, making my way down the N1 to a fridge otherwise known as Johannesburg Stadium and this afternoon’s Lion’s press conference.

I’m actually very glad that I did, because I learnt a few things in the process, not the least of which is that Elton Jantjies’s career may effectively be hanging in the balance. His relegation to the bench for this weekend’s clash against our Boys in Black and White comes as “punishment” for misbehaviour on the tour Down Under.

“He broke team protocol,” said Lions coach John Mitchell, in a stern tone, when asked why Butch was being given a start at flyhalf. When pressed, Mitch refused to comment further, putting the infringement down to “punctuality” more than anything else. But the disappointment, and more than a little anger, showed in the softly spoken Kiwi’s face. And your faithful scribe quickly put two and two together… perhaps this is why Jantjies is not in the 37-man squad attending the second Springbok training camp this Sunday in Durbs? Hmmmm. The thick plottens, as Spooner once said.

I find it sad that such a fine talent as Jantjies’s seems to be going the way of all flesh due to what can only be put down to an attitude problem. The young man has now got a reputation, whether deserved or not, what with the illicit binge drinking claims from last year’s EOYT, the start of the season’s bad conditioning which required him to be temporarily removed from the squad to improve his physical fitness, a lack of form and consistency on the field and now this latest development.

Far be it from me to read between the lines, but it seems to me that Jantjies needs to shape up, and fast, or kiss his career goodbye. All of the talent in the world will not save him if his mental attitude and emotional maturity aren’t up to the challenge.

Another rumour, this time confirmed, is that Rory Kockott is heading for France, and Lyon, after SupeRugby is over bar the shouting. “He’s decided to head off with his girlfriend and do the European thing for a while, which is a great opportunity for him,” Mitch told me after the press conference. “He realises that his chances of a Springbok callup are non-existent, and I think this will be a great experience for him.”

But most telling of all were Mitchell’s comments about the Lion’s tour to the Antipodes, echoed by Lions captain Doppies La Grange. “We managed to achieve a real team unity on tour,” said Mitch. “And it’s a unity we intend to build on in the development of the Lions culture. But what we really need now is for those above us [management and equity partners] to find unity. They need to get behind this team and play their part.”

La Grange said the overseas tour did everyone good, and that the wins away from home have helped tremendously in building team spirit. “It was awesome. We really became a team, and we started out the tour well, which really gave us momentum,” he added.

One negative issue from the tour is being dealt with – the six-week ban against Michael Rhodes for his dangerous tackle on the Highlanders’ Siale Piutau is being appealed by the Lions, with the hearing scheduled for next Tuesday.

“We are not at all happy about the decision,” said Mitchell. “There is huge disparity with the judicial system at the moment. It’s ridiculous. Michael’s tackle was, in my opinion, careless more than dangerous, and there was serious inconsistency with the decision to ban him and the action taken against the other party [Piutau].”

Asked about preparations for this weekend’s match against the Sharks, Mitchell admitted that the Lions would be more than happy to win ugly! “The Sharks aren’t coming here to play tiddlywinks,” he laughed. “We remember what they did to us in Durban, how they out-muscled us, and we want to make amends for that.”

So. There you have it. All the info straight from the Lion’s mouth, so to speak. And worth the traffic at Allandale, nog al. Not the least for the fact that after the conference was over, Mitchell strode over to me, thrust out his hand and introduced himself, staying to chat for a good half an hour, about anything and everything from rugger, the fact that when he won the Hawera Cup he never saw it, what a good chum Plum is, how he thinks SA may well be his new home and why the Lion’s can’t buy their culture but must rather develop it.

The overall impression I have been left with is what a nice oke John Mitchell is. And what stunning prospects await the Lions if he is allowed to follow through with his team, and manages to get the suits in the corridors of power at the GLRU and Mr Gumede unified and working together.

Youth is not an excuse which can be used forever.

  • Great work Sharon! I love getting the real deal – I have attended a few pressers and I’m always amazed that what I read in the newspapers the next day is usually an embellished version of what was actually said.

On young Jantjies: he may be experiencing some bumps, but not all youngsters are ready for this kind of pressure at 20.

Patrick is exceptional in his maturity, but it doesn’t mean that Jantjies won’t be a superb player in a few years, despite some youthful hi-jinks.

Thing of some of the things that the likes of Beale and Cooper got up to at a similar age.

  • @SharonvanWyk (Comment 48) : I honestly don’t think he is as one dimensional as many think. I think he struggles somewhat behind a 9 that does not control the game the way FdP does when in form. I don’t think he handles the pressure of having to take control of the match, he prefers to let the 9 create, and then to serve as a link.

And I hope for Elton’s sake that he gets to make up for the “glitches” – I just think he has to take care not to create a negative reputation with regards to his level of commitment. Today’s coaches and management are not as lenient about youthful high jinks and the perceptions created now, false or otherwise, will be very hard for him to overcome later.

  • @Muzi (Comment 57) : Hougaard has a great pass from the base, very snappy, and he is quick to the breakdown. I like him a lot at 9, but he does not control the game at 9 like FdP and Ruan do. I think part of the problem with McLeod this season is he is trying to control the game, whereas last year he was happy doing the basics well. He is not the kind of 9 that can control a match, his boot is very suspect, and he is not all that nippy when taking his runs. He would be much better off to just get to the base quickly and feed his first receiver quickly.

  • @Muzi (Comment 65) : Not to sound like a jerk, but I can’t name a better 10 playing rugby at this point in time in the world. Nobody that has his all around skills and decision making ability. So based on that, I don’t think he is overrated at all. Sometimes I think Cooper is a bit overrated, but that is more because he is nowhere near as consistent as Dan Carter. Who do you think is a better 10 than Carter right now in the world?

I think Frans once read somewhere that his career was being mishandled and then elected to blame every mistake he ever made on the fact that he was being mishandled. He was his own worst enemy. Whether that has changed will be interesting to see.

This is what I meant when I said he had shot his load in SA, worn out his welcome. But supporters are quick to forget, and we are already seeing that with many Sharks supporters now calling for his return. I am sure he will be back a better and more mature player, and he will be accepted with open arms.

  • @sharks_lover (Comment 106) : I think he is a superior 12. My concern would be how he would have handled Lambie stepping into the 10 jersey. Remember Steyn always thought himself a 10, which is also part of why he left, with Ruan being picked at 10 for both Sharks and Boks. I have a sneaking suspicion he may have tossed his toys from the cot if Lambie had come into the fold while Steyn was still with the Sharks.

  • @sharks_lover (Comment 137) : As for booing, I don’t like it in general, even when booing the opposition. I remember when playing away matches, and the other teams supporters would boo, it was almost as good as our own supporters cheering when it came to motivation. So not only does it hurt our own players, but it serves to motivate the opposition. No much better to cheer politely for the effort expended, whether by our boys or the opposition.

Why, pray tell, would you need to know even one of them personally to know that one of them couldn’t keep himself fit during the offseason, or why would you need to know one of them to know that one of them was disciplined twice on different tours?

Seeing as it it the same one with these problems only a fool would assume that they are the same, so it is a reasonable assumption that they are infact very different with both having great talent but their being a vast difference between their committment levels.

YOU decide which one has the committment issues?

yes cool .. but assuming Eltons career is going down the drain because of getting disciplined is a bit rough dont you think ? i would be more worried if he didnt get disciplined ? that whould have showed that mitch doesnt care enougth about the oke to actually show ho the right way .

“I’m actually very glad that I did, because I learnt a few things in the process, not the least of which is that Elton Jantjies’s career is effectively hanging in the balance.” Did mitch say that or did she hear that from pat lambie who is very close mates with elton ?
