Update on the Swannie situation

It appears that Sharks center Riaan Swanepoel will only by joining French club Clermont on a short-term basis, to provide cover while their regular centres are on World Cup duty.

The so-called “World Cup Joker” contract will run from July until the end of October and will see Swanepoel fill in for Aurelien Rougerie and Gonzalo Canale, who are expected to play for France and Italty respectively at the showpiece tournament in New Zealand.

No information is currently available as to what Swannie’s plans are after October.

  • This might be good for his carreer. Maybe he will pick up some additional skills while over there and come back a better player. Lets hope…

  • Well if Plum is so dead set on playing an ex Clermont center next season the he can now play Swannie instead of Joubert.

  • Been thinking about the Swannie situation some more, and am getting worked up into a righteous, white-knuckle, vein-throbbing rage.

While it is possible (and even probable) that Swannie is not the quality 12 we need at the Sharks, I just feel that he has not been dealt with in a fair manner.

For a few seasons now Swannie and Dries Strauss were competing for the 12 jersey, without either really making the position their own. If memory serves correctly, Swannie actually had his nose in front at the start of last year’s CC, starting in the opening game. Whether through injury or form, Driess took his place, the Lambie phenomenon happened, Dries had the season of his life, and cemented his spot at 12.

So at that point, Swannie was the de-facto backup at 12. A decision was made not to renew Dries’ contract, and purchase Bosman, a situation which didn’t change Swannie’s status as backup 12.

What irks me is that during Bosman’s long run of average performances, Swannie was not given the opportunity to prove his mettle and/or compete for the starting berth. Instead he was relegated to the Vodacom Cup, and yanked into the Sharks squad at will, only to get 5 minutes game time on occassion.

So if the Sharks have decided to release him, what was the decision based on? Form? Based on what evidence; he wasn’t given any sort of opportunity to show off his form at Super rugby level? So then historical evidence? Dries showed that you can turn that around. Moreover, if the decision was based on that, then I am sure it was taken some time ago, so why yank the guy around with regards to Super rugby?

Of course, my arguments are dluted somewhat by the news that this is a short term loan, but I’d be rather surprised if the Sharks renew his contract at the end of all of this. Anyways, the purpose of this protracted rant is to express the opinion that I have a gut feel the Sharks have not been overly transparent or clear in their communications with him.

The biggest issue is that this is not a Swannie thing specifically, but symptomatic of the way Sharks management have been dealing with players. There has been quite a few incidents recently where Plum has publicly raved about players’ talent, and stated as his intent to bring them through into the Super rugby squad, only for those players to suddenly get cut loose or relegated to Vodacom Cup. I’m thinking of the Cronje flyhalf twin, the flanker with the poodle on his head, Mike Rhodes, etc.

    Rant over… for now.

  • @Culling Song (Comment 3) : I think the Sharks would like to keep him actually. We’re pretty thin in this position, especially considering JLP’s contract is only for a year. That would leave us a little thin at 12.

Hopefully he is still in the mix. I think he can still be an asset to the Sharks.

  • As I’ve pointed out before, I’m a big Swannie fan, and not just because we share a first name  . He sold me over with his dedication in the Sharks vs B&I Lions. I can still remember him going down with a knee injury, and before the medics could get to him the play moved back towards his side, he got up made the tackle and only then went down.

I don’t know where this is coming from but I don’t think Sharks supporters in general have a problem with Ludick. If anything he’s been one of the most consistent performers in the Sharks team. He is not be utilised enough because of the poor performance of the centers in general.

I do think that as is the case with willem Alberts, his performance is tapering off due to excessive workload. I also think he is made to look worse than he is by the generally poor support play of the Sharks this season.
