Sharks lose against Lions by 30 points all

The Sharks bottled an opportunity to secure a play-off place by succumbing to a 30-all draw against the Lions in Johannesburg.

Yet another utterly atrocious first-half showing, with a number of the Sharks’ elder statesmen turning in performances hardly worthy of their reputations (or pay-cheques) saw the Lions score two good tries to take a 20-9 lead into the shed. The Joburg team, with Butch James in the van, enjoyed nearly 80% possession in the half and barely allowed the Sharks a sniff.

A third try shortly after half-time saw the visitors looking out for the count at 30-9 down. At this point, coach Plumtree inadvertently changed the course of the match by emptying his bench – usually the sort of thing he only does when he feels he can no longer win the match. Marcell Coetzee, Bismarck du Plessis, Wiehahn Herbst, Freddy Michalak and Adi Jacobs combined to up the pace and introduce real flair and unpredictability into the Sharks game – the likes of which has not been seen this season save for the second half against the Crusaders in London. Three tries were duly scored, the first by Pat Lambie to start the comeback. Butch James was yellow-carded shortly afterwards for a high, swinging arm on Keegan Daniel which deserved red and the Sharks pressed on to score again through JP Pietersen and then finally Mvovo.

Lambie kept the pressure on by kicking all of the conversions, but with the scores tied at 30 points all with a few minutes to play, the Sharks were unable to force the win. The lost points mean that next weekend’s game at Loftus Versveld becomes a must-win for the Sharks.

Scorers: Lions 30 – Tries by Cobus Grobbelaar (2) and Jano Vermaak. 3 penalties and 3 conversions by Butch James.
Sharks 30 – Tries by Pat Lambie, JP Pietersen and Lwazi Mvovo. 3 penalties and 3 conversions by Lambie.

  • Thought about it for 5 min now and I’ve come to an conclusion (opinion).

I’m not blaming the players for this one I’m blaming the coach. It was fairly obvious that most of the players that started were out on their feet. Exhausted, drained. The long season is taking its toll on them and like we saw when a flourish of subs came on everything changed. Player management to me is what cost us this game!

  • @BR (Comment 1) : Lets see, next week we have a major contrast in teams… a team known for their ability to get the job done versus the team that… well… doesnt. A team that beat WP by 34 points to get into the semis in 2006, a team that beat the Reds by 90 odd to gain second place on the log in 2007, a team which won 3 out of 4 super15 titles from 2007 to 2010, against a team which lost 4 out of 5 home games in 2009 to drop out of semi contention, lost their first 5 games in 2010 to end their season before it started, a team which has a reputation for snatching defeat from the jaws of victory and for self destructing as the season continues. That is effectively what we have to look forward to next week for qualification. I think I put more faith in the Brumbies beating the Waratahs next week to allow the sharks to qualify than for the sharks to beat the Bulls.

  • I hope we see quite a number of changes for next week
    adi for oupa
    Herbst for van Staden
Michalak for Bossie or even Ludik and move Lambie to fullback
    Bissie for Smit
    and Hargreaves for Sykes
we should get two of our big men back so that will also help.

  • @BR (Comment 21) : Herbst was awesome.
I liked lambie at 15 and I thought Bosman played well. Unfortunately guys like Jaque Botes ,Stef T ,Sykes and Al Hargs need to take it on the chin. I think we are joking ourselves if we think ludik offers offers more than lambie at 15 ,with michalak we looked so much more dangerous.

I have a problem with Kanko ,why doesnt he play with that heart every game ,played well. Keegan was inefective imo .
Have a look at herbst as a starting prospect in the cc,he is fantastic as with coetzee, they bought on much needed grunt. What was plumtree thinking not starting coetzee.

Much better second half ,but i think we could all sense a not so positive outcome in the build up to this game.

Sharks should look at the bulls game and be slighlty dissapointed with themselves, this is a replay of 2009. IMO sharks need to think about perhaps pulling out their cheque book for that sau21 lock Iztebein(whatever).

Next week will be an epic clash but at the moment I cant say the sharks deserve to win it.

  • What does one say? For me Taute was impressive, he did what I am complaining about Ludik the whole season. But it is no use airing my complains as the same story repeats itself week after week. I don’t even want to go further than 15, because as the numbers go down, so does the performance.

  • @Ben (Comment 39) : his defense has been shocking in some games, but he has got good distribution and often gets his hands through the tackle. I think adi outside him would make a big difference, adi also doesnt try and grubber the ball away the whole time so our wings might actually see a bit more ball too..

    14.Mvovo
    15.Lambie

I think my biggest concern is that when jacobs has started he has looked poor :P

I would also bring lambie in at second reciever on attack or even use bosman as a dummy runner and let lambie stand a little deeper becuase with ball in hand and a little bit of space he works wonders ,essentially on attack he would play the role of second reciever or even forst at times.

My 2 cents ,oh and re bismarc ;I think he has been battling with basics at LO and SCRUM something that needs to be tops vs bulls.
Alternatively I wouldnt change a thing and stick with the same forumulae as today same players comming on at same time and just tell the starting xv that it is do or die time and they need to produce !

  • @ Talent, Adi started once this year @ 12 against the Bulls, did not look good, but who else was a standout that night for the Sharks…Jacobs surely bring something different to the team, that usually missing when he is not on the field, I would play McLoed 9, Michalak 10, MvoVo 11, Lambie 12, Jacobs 13, JPP 14, Ludik 15/ Terblanche (if a captain’s really needed, proven today with both of the field the Sharks performed better).

  • @ Ben, well he surely performed his best @ 13 the last few seasons, but I am still putting money on it that depending if he can play with a creative flyhalf that have good organisation skills, Jacobs can still be a quite effective 12, that can still creates a lot for the outside backs…

Beast WTF man?? Does he even realize there’s a world cup around the corner? Anyway, the boks are in good reckoning if Butch James kicks like that!

How we approach the game against the Bulls mentally is almost as important as how we do it physically. We almost got our butts kicked today and that’s because we weren’t on the field mentally in the first half.

I think he did,a few of his passes went behind some players but he has been in sa for only 2 weeks.
The best for our backline would be fred and pat @10 or 12 and not 10 and 15.
    Pat would be wasted @15.
We have to do something otherwise if we start like this against the bulls it would be game over in the first 15min.

We scored 9 points in 55 minutes whilst your messiah was on the field, and 21 points while he wasnt. The team morale is so low, because no one can respect a gravy train fat boy. He is not not not a good captain. He is one of the worst captains. Stop worshipping the guy cause he won the RWC. Argentina qualified for the play offs in that event FFS! So did fiji. • Why all the negativity surrounding Plum? He didnt touch the ball once last night… I respect him for sticking with the team tha he has backed from the start. Bosman, and I was a huge critic, is coming good. Stef @ 13 is an issue for me, but by beating the Waratahs, Cheetahs, and coming away with 2 points against a Lions side that will make the semi’s of the CC I think that the blame should lie with the players and the players only.

Example: Lions down to 14 men, ball spread to Freddy who decides the best possible option (men outside) is to go for a risky chip over the defence ending up as a turnover. Stupid mistakes cost us that game. Lambie, JPP, Mvovo, Bosman were all excellent. McLeod, I dont understand the drop in form. You have the easiest job of all – make sure you get to the ruck and pass the ball early. Last year sublime, this year average.

  • We are not playing sharks rugby, we are playing plumtree rugby….we have one game plan depending on dominating the collisions and retaining posesion…we don’t rely on the team to make the effort count but on the brussers who did not one play or pitch up for the last few games…we don’t rely on our sistems to supply quality players and need to relook the vision of sharks rugby and the strength of our sistems, beast is loosing form for lack of gametime…John Smit is currently earning a spot because of offering other talent for him to shin…stef must move on, we love you stef but let’s make sence of this and move you to a mentorship role adding value to inexperience…

We need to expose our youngsters to this level…we don’t always need a freddie michelach to come in to the mix, and rather invest in buying players like johan sadie or jean de jonge or even just give our youngster a go…

  • Just seen this result…been away abroad. Pathetic.

I have read this script already, many times in fact from season’s past to know that the Sharks do not have it in them to win the games that count. I have no faith in them beating the Bulls away. If we can’t beat the Lions away, a team that last won a home game in May 2009, what chance of beating the Bulls away?

The Waratahs will likely beat the Brumbies and the Sharks will miss out completely. Anyway, what’s to celebrate in finishing 6th? 6th place is for losers, dressing it up as a “play off” (with the odds stacked against you) doesn’t change that.

We are now facing a pathetic record of home and away losses to the Stormers and Bulls in one Super season. This is not acceptable. Serious questions need to be asked, starting with the coaching staff.

  • Really guys – is it worth it to get this worked up?? We’re complaining about maybe not making it into the playoffs of a competition specifically designed to stock the Aussie’s threadbare silver cupboard? A SA or NZ side will take it anyway but at the expense of how many players? This SuperUgly competition is past it’s due date. Mark my words, the Currie Cup will dish up far more exciting rugby and there’s still some real guts and glory on display there. Please don’t take our two recent CC wins for granted. Lets also give credit where it’s due.

  • @vanmartin (Comment 92) : Take a bow. What we need is to not throw in the towel with one game left, we need to believe we can win this game at Loftus. We all know we have the players to do it. We just need to change our mindset.

Plum, dont change a thing, leave the 22 as is. 3 weeks in a row that bench has made a huge impact, as it will this weekend. If that starting 15 start well we can beat the Bulls.

You would think by the comments that Plum hasn’t brought any silverware to DBN at all… its almost shameful..

  • Don’t become too accustomed to accepting mediocrity…

Super Rugby is the real acid test. We will all agree on that. The Currie Cup, whilst not to be scoffed at, is not what it once was.

Super Rugby results under Plumtree (remember in 2007 under Muir the Sharks topped the log and had a home final which was theirs for the taking – should’ve/could’ve/would’ve):

    2008 – 3rd
    2009 – 6th
    2010 – 9th

    2011 – 7th?

You can’t seriously tell me you’re happy with these results and their apparent downward curve? If the Bulls can win it 3 times from 2007, the Stormers reach the final for the first time in 2010 and top the SA conference in 2011, what’s holding back the Sharks?

No, Sharks fans should not accept this mediocrity when other SA teams are out playing them, sorry. Sharks fans should expect a lot more from their team and the people at NRU need to know this.

  • @siorc (Comment 95) : I think they got the picture when the Bulls travelled to DBN and the Tank was only half full.

    Since 2007:
Players Sold/Left/Retired: Johann Muller, Albert vd Berg, F Steyn, B Barrit, R Pienaar, F Michalak. Warren Britz, Gbobani Bobo, Deon Carstens, P Motgomery, W Murray, Andries Strauss, Bob Skinstad, Butch James, AJ Venter, Johan Akerman

If you could make a team up from the above they would have the talent and experience to murder the current Sharks team.

Players bought: Alberts, McLeod, Jannie, Bosman, JLP, Ludik, Michalak, M Joubert, Mostert, Skeate with a few youngsters coming through the ranks.

Good players yes, but only two (Alberts/Jannie) are in with a chance of starting for the boks. And that is the differnce. WE have lost about 10 boks since 2007 and gained 2…

I will be here, on earth, it’s not like I’m taking my life after this last result ;-) , I’m just going to Europe and would probably not be able to watch these last few important games. But I will be hoping, no matter how impossible it might seem, that they will win 4 more games in this year’s competition. I know they haven’t played their best yet, I am disappointed too, but I still believe that this team can bring something special, take the Bulls at home, then the Blues and Reds away, to find ourselves in the Final against the Stormers at Newlands.
