Sharks under 19 trials set for Thursday

Sharks under 19 coach Ryan Strudwick will put his provisional squad of 40 through their paces in two trial games against the Pumas on Thursday. Strudwick and his assistants, Sean Erasmus and Deon Kayser, will be looking to trim down to a final squad of 30 players ahead of the ABSA Under 19 competition which kicks off in a month’s time.

The trial squad contains a smattering of players on junior Sharks contracts, with the balance comprising Sharks Academy students and other youngsters who have shone for their clubs’ under 20 sides so far this year. There’s one name amongst the squad who will, for obvious reasons, play no part in the trial – that of Paul Jordaan. The Baby Bok centre is, of course, currently in Italy with Dawie Theron’s side but will in all likelihood see little under 19 rugby this year anyway, as he’s probably going to go straight to the under 21s.

Queens tighthead Allan Dell will vie with another promising schoolboy, Paarl Boys High’s Nico van Dyk, for the number three jersey, although the former might be tried at loosehead as well. There are two very promising contracted players duking it out at flyhalf too, with Fred Zeilinga and Gavin Hauptfleisch both showing great promise in high school. There’s a young man with serious pedigree amongst the loose forwards too – Hilton’s Guy Alexander is the nephew of a former Sharks great, Gary Teichmann.

Other players to look out for are exciting loose forwards Khaya Majola (who starred at Craven Week last year) and Siseko Jafta, while former Grey Kollege scrummy Nicol Linde is also a bright prospect for the future. The large number of Empangeni boys in the squad is a testament to the great work being done at the Zululand Rugby Academy.

The games start at 10h30 tomorrow at Glenwood.

  • @beet (Comment 20) : trying to find out… I don’t think that offering players bursaries to attend the Academy works out so well, though. The guys are looking for junior contracts, not bursaries.

Neil Jordaan turned down his Academy bursary to stay in the Free State. Maybe Olivier did the same.

One thing the Sharks don’t really need more of, though, is good young props. We ahve literally hundreds!

  • @Salmonoid (Comment 67) : agree 35 seems excessive, but I would think you should probably look at at least a full starting team each year?

  • @beet (Comment 69) : interesting concept, but I don’t really agree.

The vast majority of boys at the Academy are there cos their folks are paying through the nose for the privilege… there is nothing tying those kids to the Sharks… I don’t think that any of the top schoolboys in the country would opt to go to the Academy under their own steam rather than accept a contract elsewhere…

  • @robdylan (Comment 72) : I know about the players that have to pay their own way but I honestly thought that as many as 200 players in the various academies like the Zululand Academy were there via bursaries or funding. Obviously not all are the cream of the crop but the Bulls and WP have the luxury of varsities who themselves offer bursaries/scholarships, so we have to mimic that in many respects.

Free studies, subsidised accom and rugby training is way different from a top notch player like Johan Goosen who it’s believed could command a salary of between 80000 and 180000 p.a. first year out of school.

But I know you’re the guy to get the real story

  • @beet (Comment 73) : I never ask these okes about money… doesn’t seem right.

But then again, I’d rather have a properly-contracted high performance squad of 40 juniors than a “cast of thousands” that you can’t really control

  • @robdylan (Comment 74) : No not about salaries, I meant about no. of funded players in the programme vs parent paying players.
