Stormers name strong side

Allister Coetzee has named an exciting team to take on the Toyota Cheetahs in the very last game of the league phase of the inaugaral Super Rugby tournament.

The Stormers only need one bonus point (or a win will do) to finish as SA’s Conference Winners and also Runners Up on the overall League table. Now for the changes:

In a change that will please most Stormers supporters, Peter Grant returns to flyhalf which should boost a side that has gone through FIVE different options during the tournament. Grant will add much needed stability and experience to the backline which was sorely missing against the Bulls last week.

Regular inside centre Jean de Villiers moves to the right wing and his place is taken by Juan De Jongh who after a slow start to the season has been making a huge impact off the bench in recent games. Another change to the backline has Conrad Jantjes dropping to the bench with last year’s Players Player of the Year Gio Aplon taking his place at fullback. Aplon is without a doubt SA’s most attacking fullback and should add some much needed pace and penetration from the back.

Now for the bestest news of the week. Ricky Januarie has been ruled out due to a hand injury! *I just did a little jig now* CAN I GET AN AMEN?? WOOHOOO!

Dewald ‘Deadeye’ Duvenage starts at 9 while young Louis Schreuder moves to the bench.

Here is the team:

15 – Gio Aplon
14 – Jean de Villiers
13 – TWG13
12 – Juan de Jongh
11 – Bryan Habana
10 – Peter Grant
9 – Dewald Duvenage
8 – Duane Vermeulen
7 – Francois Louw
6 – Schalk Burger (c)
5 – Andries Bekker
4 – Elstadt
3 – Brok Harris
2 – Tiaan Liebenberg
1 – Wicus Blaauw

Bench: Deon Fourie, Frans Malherbe, Anton Van Zyl, Nick Koster, Louis Schreuder, Johann Sadie, Conrad Jantjes

  • How often has JdV played on the wing this season? Wasn’t very impressed when he was moved there for the Boks.

He didnt do that well for the Boks last year but he was quite good for WP in the CC.

I’d prefer Sadie at 14 though with De Jongh on the bench and JDV in his rightful place. ;-)

  • This is a seriously strong team, I still think JdV and JF are the best centre pairing out there and I wouldn’t break them up, but it’ll do nicely.

  • @wpw (Comment 13) : I think the problem is the structure at Bok level, Habs’s defensive line is pretty good for us, but is terrible at national level… maybe they struggle to make the switch.

  • stormers don’t really need a bonus point to top SA conference, sharks cannot overtake them, and for the bulls to do so would need stormers to lose without a bonus point, and bulls to win with a bonus point, and the combined winning margins to be more than 84 points!

  • @McLovin (Comment 22) : Actually, not quite, reds can lose with one bonus point, and stormers win with a bonus point, they (stormers) will go top. That would give them both 63 points, and 12 wins, but stormers already have a better points difference, with these results it would get even better.

I was, however, just correcting the ‘Stormers only need one bonus point (or a win will do) to finish as SA’s Conference Winners’ statement, they don’t need the point to do that, it will be almost impossible not to win it from here.

While I thought Aplon might be tested quite a bit, didn’t rate Aplon then quite as much as I do now.
