  • I guess Johan Muller could be regarded as a surprise, but basically anyone in SA who is not long term injured or terminally retarded, bar Ricky Januarie, have made it. Surprised that Earl Rose didnt crack the nod for a 50 man squad. Robert Ebersohn should be there though.

  • @Pablo Dinero (Comment 2) : We are not exactly blessed with too many quality locks as backup at the moment. Anyone who has watched Ulster this season, will have been impressed with Muller’s performances.

It’s a 49 man squad too…so he is unlikely to make the cut when whittled down to 30!

  • @Villie (Comment 3) : Oh yes, I agree totally. Thats my point though… this squad is meaningless. I dont get announcing a preliminary squad, then a few weeks later announcing another preliminary squad, followed a few weeks later by… surprise… a preliminary squad. I though the squad was supposed to get smaller and smaller over time finally resulting in the final squad for the WC not larger an larger and including anyone with a provincial/overseas professional contract and a heartbeat.

That might be there for injuries but whats the bet that if Keegan-for example-has another blinder against the Saders he will be added to the Squad!!!

  • @Pokkel (Comment 59) : You are joking right?

We are talking Bok quality locks now…not just provincial level or average players. Sykes has been mediocre for 2 seasons now and not international class. Mostert has hardly played…you can’t suddenly punt a player based on 1 very good performance. Elstadt is a star of the future…extremely promising but this is his first season of Super rugby and Van Zyl can’t even make the Stormers…so all of them are way behind Muller in the pecking order. Muller has a number of Bok caps and is proven.

  • @Pokkel (Comment 74) : I suppose you’re saying that Bekker will be the bench lock, fair enough, that seems to be PdV’s thinking. Personally, I think it is the wrong call since PdV tends to play Matfield the full 80 and subs Bakkies, I would rather have one of Danie Roussow or Flip Van de Merwe on the bench to replace Bakkies when he inevitably comes off.

  • @Pokkel (Comment 80) : Well then, I don’t think the bench lock is quite as determined as one might think then. PdV has had a tendency to carry Bekker on the bench, I suppose to cover the lineouts in the event Matfield gets injured. But for some reason he has always then taken Bakkies off and put Bekker on with Matfield, which I think is a very poor combination, not enough grunt.

I would tend to agree that Danie is the best option, he is so versatile, and still a superb player, but I am not so sure that is what PdV is going to do.

  • @Ben (Comment 88) : My dad was born and schooled in Pretoria and his mother lived there until she passed, so I got to go to several matches at Loftus in the 70s. Awesome stadium, can see how it can be incredibly intimidating for opposition players. But for some reason, the Sharks seem to turn that into a positive for them at Loftus, as their record there is quite good in recent years.

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 15) : KSA the all knowledgable doesn’t know that the IRB need a 50 man squad named from which the final 30 man squad will be named. It is probably so they can get photographs and information gathered for the media. Then as the squads are dropped to the final 30 so are the profiles. I think the IRB also expects injured players to be replaced by players from the left out 20 so that commentators aren’t clueless on any new players in a squad.

  • @waje (Comment 99) : You are missing the point. They announced a 51 man squad and then a few weeks ago they announced a 37 man squad and now they announce a 50 man squad?

  • @Ben (Comment 100) : No re-read what I said. The other squads you refer to are the player camps, this squad is for the IRB. Two different matters. All the teams playing in the RWC have to name a 50 man squad.
