Crusaders end Sharks season

In a match punctuated by as many big hits as errors from both sides, the Crusaders beat the Sharks by 36 points to 8 in Nelson to advance to a Super Rugby Semi-Final showdown against the Stormers. In the final analysis, the Sharks will rue an error-strewn performance that failed to reach the heights of their great win against the Bulls at Loftus last weekend.

South African fans were bemused, confused and infuriated throughout the game by the often bizarre interpretations of Kiwi ref Bryce Lawrence, which saw the Sharks repeatedly penalised for the pettiest of reasons. Despite starting like a house on fire and keeping the home side under huge pressure for the first half hour, the constant tide of penalties, coupled with superb defence from the men in red, conspired to take the Sharks out of the game. Despite scoring the first try to Willem Alberts, after a good break by Charl McLeod and Keegan Daniel, the visitors turned 13-5 down and never recovered, with the Crusaders scoring two more tries in the second half to go with yet another umpteen penalty goals.

An intercept try to Kieran Read after the Sharks tried some silly passing in their own 22 ultimately sealed the result, long before prop Franks scored the third try deep into the gamer’s closing quarter.

The Sharks will rue a lack of accuracy in virtually all that they did, a factor which was no doubt at least partially caused by the travel factor. In the final analysis, though, the Crusaders outplayed them for most of the game and deserved the victory, although I would argue that the final scoreline was somewhat flattering to them.

Crusaders 36 – Try: Sonny Bill Williams, Kieran Read, Ben Franks; Conversions: Dan Carter (2), Matthew Berquist; Penalties: Carter (5)
Sharks 8 – Try: Willem Alberts; Penalty: Pat Lambie

  • One positive from the loss is, the guys will get some much needed rest for the Springbok campaigns as well as our Currie Cup campaign. Hopefully they can sort out our lineouts as well as getting some youngsters through the ranks.

  • Even Justin Marshall and co were perplexed about some of those first half decisions, I wonder if the second half also would of had some interesting decisions had the sharks not imploded and had still been within a sniff of a victory. Oh well I’ll consider the season a success if we retain the currie cup..

  • wow… Gavin Rich just took a lekker old swipe at me in his match report :) Fair game, I suppose…

“There were some Sharks fans who blindly followed their hearts, but the Crusaders win was largely anticipated by most people who work in the game and know the massive disadvantage the Sharks were under having to travel to the south island just a week after their bruising encounter against the Bulls. Terms like jetlag and travel fatigue are not the figments of anyone’s imagination, they are realities.”

  • @robdylan (Comment 11) : Lambie in my honest opinion is a classic 5-eights similar to a young aaron mauger it’s his decision making at 10…crisp passing and time he has on the ball that is impressive a gem worth looking after just please please do not mess the kid up like you did with the two prodigies fracois steyn and ruan pienaar.

I feel disappointed now and don’t wanna run down players, we lacked the intensity that we had last week, we have to live with it and look forward, next mission is to defend the CC… We can!!!!

Have to say it…..that ref really dissapointed….turned the game on its head with some really dubious calls. Got to go with neutral refs or run the risk of tainting the entire competetion.

well at least i’m not the only one that feels like this that dame ref blows and blows for nothing and most of the time it was for scrums no what was he think the stupid ref

but the game is over and nothing we can do about sth

so Sharks at least we can get the ball rolling for the WC 2011 for some and the rest can do thier thing for the CC 2011

sorry guys i really thought we could make it to the top maybe next time but thanks for a great game at loftus i really enjoyed it to the fullest in the box or what ever you call it

And congrats Saders next year we will wait,

but don’t get to used to the win thing the Streamers are going to the fullest to win this comp and i think the whole of SA is behind them so go Stormers go

  • It was always gonna be a tough ask and the boys held their own for the first 30 minutes. A few less kicks, a few less dubious calls and a little more focus and the scoreline may have been closer. Kudos to the Sharks and good luck in the CC! Congrats to the Crusaders – you have a great team but I hope the Stormers klap you really hard in the final.

  • Bad luck boys, and I say BAD luck because it definitely wasn’t tough luck given some calls.

That said, the Saders are deserved winners in this match and it would have taken an effort from the Sharks like at Loftus +10% to have toppled the Saders at home today.

Many of you will believe the Sharks should have given themselves a better opportunity this season and not to sneak in at number 6 on the last weekend.

You have right to feel aggrieved because I agree with you.

    But also remember the positives.

Bosman started to find his feet towards the end, McCleod seemed to get back to some 2010 form, Alberts was huge (although tired) throughout the campaign, Daniel again highlighted why he will go down as one of the unluckiest loosies in SA rugby.

Mvovo and Hargs matured a hell of a lot at this level now I believe, as did Eugene v Staden – if you hang onto Bissie and Jannie, your future looks bright in this department.

Sharks getting some experience with Joubert joining you and if they bring through a couple of youngsters amongst these senior boys, your future looks very good. Hoffmann (and perhaps the acquisition of the Ebersohns) will add so much value to this team.

It is small things that need tweaking, and considering where the powerhouse of the last decade find themselves and the amount of work they (Bulls) have in front of them, SA rugby will be controlled by the coastal boys for a couple of years imo.

Be proud of your team, they did you proud in the end.

One a final note, goodbye to John Smit, a Sharks legend. Thanks for the memories in Black and White sir!

I always had Charla as a good reliable scrummy and wanted him to get more chances (be carefull what you wish for  ) but can’t honestly say that I put him in the same class as Fourie and Pienaar. Even Hougaard may top him.
What I like about him is him being a team player and getting the ball out quickly without trying silly little breaks when they are absolutely not on and I felt this season he was more selfish more often (same thing that used to irritate me about Kockot and which I see in Pretorius). Just my thinking.
