  • I have been supporting the Sharks for many years, and have never see such blatantly bias refereeing. The Sharks never had a chance of winning.

  • JUST NOTE THE FOLLOWING AMENDMENT:

Jaco Peyper will be AR1 in the Stormers vs Crusaders game and not Marius Jonker as originally reported..

  • Go all the other teams except the Stormers.
Nothing will give me more pleasure than to sit down next Sat afternoon and watch a repeat of the 1999 semi when Otago came to town and thumped the Stormers.

The last thing I want to have happen is the Stormers as champs. Imagine the big heads, arrogance and neverending story.

Since the Blues and Crusaders are 2 of only 4 to win S/R I hope they reach the final. Keep it in the family until the Sharks can become team no.5 to win.

  • @diablo (Comment 34) : No. I’m a Saffa. When I started watching rugby as a kid in the 80s there was no foreign involvement. Biggest rivals were the other provinces. I guess I’ve always stayed true to this rivalry. I don’t hate the other unions, I just don’t want them to outperform my team. There is no rule to suggest that I have to support other SA teams. My stance is no different to a EPL supporter who supports any team that plays say Man Utd.

Remember how you guys rubbed it in after last year’s CC final. The arrogance of most Sharks bloggers was very distasteful!!

  • @franshark (Comment 76) : Today wasn’t a bad day. The odds were stacked against us, especially with all of the travelling. That’s not meant as an excuse, because we made a fair few errors, but we also managed very effectively to shut the Saders down in the first half an hour of the first half. And have shown the Stormers how to beat them in the process.
There’s no point in ifs or buts now… we have a Currie Cup title to begin defence of in a couple of weeks or so…

I figured that once those underachieving Klofies lost to GCB they shifted their focus to doing well at CW.

It also helps that the Bulls core team comes from 1 school.

Today was not SuperPat’s best day… and I tend to agree that while playing him at 15 worked well last week, today he would have perhaps been put to better use at 10. But it serves no purpose to look back and wish it’d turned out differently. The Saders were far from their deadliest form today, and we were just sluggish. The better team on the day got the victory. Even if the ref was wearing Crusaders-coloured boxers!

  • @Muzi (Comment 144) : I disagree with that. While development in New Zealand is certainly a lot more structured and more successful than it is here (thanks to the NZ academy, etc) there are lots of other factors, some of which are outside of the game itself, which determine whether a player will make a certain grade or not, not the least of which is that players maturity, ability to accept instruction and play to a game plan, play where he is asked to and be part of a team.
Add to that tactical ability and the ubiquitous “BMT” and you begin to see quite quickly that development and player management can only achieve so much – the rest is down to the player himself.
The reason Frans Steyn is not a Dan Carter is because he is Frans Steyn, and not Dan Carter. No amount of development and opportunity is going to turn a player into something he is not if his attitude is not where it should be.
BMT, tactical ability and a great attitude and work ethic cannot be taught – you either have them or you don’t. Carter has the whole package, in spadeloads. So does Lambie. Steyn does not.

  • @diablo (Comment 154) : Absolutely not. You cannot compare Lambie to Steyn. They are chalk and cheese. Lambie was moved to fullback for the first time in virtually an entire season and pulled off a miracle, getting man of the match in the process, a week after getting man of the match at flyhalf. How many players have pulled that one off?
Steyn never achieved the consistency at flyhalf that Lambie has, and, in my opinion, never gelled in the team the way Lambie has.
For Lambie, humility is very much an integral part of his character, not just something he puts on for the sake of the cameras. Steyn does not know the meaning of the word.
Don’t get me wrong – Frans has a great talent, but I think he has largely burned his bridges when it comes to being given the chance to use it properly.

  • i feel lambie is getting a baptism by fire everywhere he plays – sharks/boks – and i hope he has a good enough family structure and personal resolve to withstand all the hype because he is a talented boy. South Africans are LOOKING to make a rugby superstar out of him and it maybe detrimental to his progression rugb wise…

Layoff the hyperbole people and just enjoy rugby for what it is…a game.

  • @bergshark (Comment 165) : Maybe the problem with Frans was that he achieved so much by 19 and he didn’t have the grounding to stay humble. This move to Racing could have forced him to grow up but I have my reservations. As for Carter, if you could choose someone to kick for goal and your life depended on it, would you go for Frans or DC?

He definitely has a good family structure, and fabulous personal resolve – indeed, he’s one of the most committed, confident and quietly resolved human beings I have ever come across. I don’t think he handles the hype too badly, all things considered, and he certainly seems to have his feet firmly planted on the ground.
I too think the mainstream media need to give him the space to breathe and continue to enjoy playing good rugby.

  • @SharonvanWyk (Comment 180) : Pat needs to be allowed the spade to make mistakes by the mainstream media. It is just as easy for him to be put on a pedestal after a good day as it is for him to be written off as overrated on an off day. No one is perfect and he should be allowed the freedom to make the odd mistake.

  • @bergshark (Comment 187) : Was a good one, indeed. But BMT is about more than punting a ball a good few metres every so often! It’s the way you deal with pressure in every aspect of the game, and in life in general. It’s actually who you are more than what you do. I’m a BMT kind of girl, which is a good thing because I have had to deal with more than my fair share of high pressure situations! Ive never had to kick for posts, though!

  • @war1 (Comment 188) : Good point, War1! Sadly, the mainstream media in this country are all about selling newspapers and sensationalistic headlines… Which is pretty much par for the course in mainstream media everywhere, to be fair. But at the end of the day, Pat will survive the slings and arrows the media throws at him, simply because he is THAT good.

  • @bergshark (Comment 187) : In my mind it comes down to composure and whether you can trust a player to make the big play when it counts. A lot of Steyn’s kick are just hit and hope and sometimes they go through but more often not, you wanna check his stats too? DC is not perfect and we’re not saying he is but rather that he generally handles pressure better.

  • @bergshark (Comment 190) : On that I agree with you. There was too much hype around him and he was expected to work miracles and when he didn’t he was criticized harshly. That is unfortunately the life of a young rugby player in SA who makes an impact early on. Longevity for a rugby player depends on how you deal with that pressure as well as the obvious physical demands.
