You moved – Dangerous play!

I’ve seen a lot of funny things, but the look on the entire Sharks’ front row’s faces when Bryce Lawrence uttered those four words was priceless, and possibly the death knell for a team that was skating on a thin line between drive to win and jet-lag induced exhaustion.

Casting my mind back to the game a few things come to mind as to other possible reasons for the Sharks rather unimpressive second half capitulation.

The crowd was disappointing, one can only imagine going from the adrenaline filled cauldron of Loftus with forty eight thousand crazy people all cursing your lineage, to a damp squib, half filled dreary eighteen thousand seat stadium in Nelson. That’s like driving a Ferrari and then having it ripped away and replaced by a ride-on lawnmower with no petrol in it.

The Crusaders were motivated.  They’re the only shining light in an otherwise terrible year in Christchurch.  Two big earthquakes have pretty much ruined their city, so I guess the rugby players feel a bit of a heroic compulsion to make things less rubbish for the people.  They played the better rugby and took their scoring opportunities, so good on them.

Finally I would like to comment on Sonny Jill William’s Oscar winning dive.  Christiano Ronaldo, that greasy haired, football playing drama queen couldn’t have done a better job.  Why is it that some of these supremely talented sportsmen feel the need to fall on the ground as if they’ve been kicked in the groin when they clearly haven’t been.  One would swear JP Pieterson had pulled a Chuck Norris roundhouse out of his handbag with the way SBW fell over.

In any event, it is a sad way to end a pretty inconsistent season.  I suppose we can console ourselves with the fact that the top 4 teams at the end of the regular season are in the semi-finals, as it should be.  I would like to see a Stormers vs Reds final, and I’m not too concerned who wins, as long as I get to see some good rugby.

  • would be awesome if JP were given the opportunity to deliver said roundhouse after the match… although I suspect he’d have to go 3 rounds with Bissie for the privilege.

  • The Crusaders needs no help to beat any team. Lawrence just ensured that the game is finished as a contest as soon as possible.

The look on Mcleod’s face after “knocking” the ball 4 times in a row at rucks was heartbreaking.

Denying the Sharks to build any rythim or momentum finished us off.

And then they go and give this guy the final???????

  • Just one thing, Quirky… Stormers v Reds in Cape Town can’t happen cos the Reds ended first.

That match up is only possible in Brisbane.

Stormers only hope for a home final is if the Blues win.

Some of those refereeing calls were just plain funny!

  • @PTAShark (Comment 5) : Agree and said it on another blog. We would have lost even if we had the best ref on Saturday. Saders were the bettr team. Though with a better ref we may have not lost as bad.

With a lot of bad calls it does eventually get to the players confidence.

  • I would like to see a Blues Crusaders final. Make the All Black players play another two weeks of rugby, before the RWC. (Actually I wouldn’t want to watch the game, just see it happen). But on the other hand seeing the Stormers beat the Sharks to a Super Rugby title would also be sweet. I believe if don’t take the opportunities handed to you, you deserve disappointment, and the Sharks deserve the disappointment.

  • I knew once we had Bryce we would be in for some stupid calls. But that one has to be his best yet ever to Beast. “You moved – Dangerous play”………hahahahaha. After watching it again I had a bloody good laugh. At the time was angry, but even the kiwi commentators had a laugh. They could not understand what the heck Bryce was on about.

SBW has lost plenty of my respect for that oscar dive. Really players doing that should get sent off or at least a penalty against them. Also knocking the ball out of Pat’s had after he had marked was just a down right spiteful thing to do. Another plenty should have been given for that. Bissie gave him a shove, after.

  • The problem with the ref and the game was that from the mooment that Lawrence blew the dangerous play con the Sharks knew that there was not a hope in hell that they could win the game. They may have doubted it before but after that call they KNEW it.

  • @PTAShark (Comment 5) : Have to say that I believe as well the Crusaders would have won the game anyway but it would have been awesome to see a game where the ref wasn’t noticed and the same rules blowed for both sides.

Think he gave away the NZ conspiracy for 2011 a little early.

As for SBW’s fall, I believe he’s shown that if the bookies tell him the money is in favour of the short, disabled hobbit winning the next boxing match he’ll take a dive.

@KingRiaan (Comment 11) : He’d never take on Bissie in the ring, it would mean the opposition would have a chance of beating him.

Anyhow hope this ref is dropped for the final. Yes agree, I think we now know what we in for at the world cup in nz if we make it to the semi. Doubt we gonna have much chance against the ABs no matter how well we play. Think refs gonna favour them. Should not be thinking like that, but after Saturday it sure put a sour taste in my mouth.

  • Remeber Bryce also got the ‘Touch pause engage’ wrong last year when we played the Force. Just remember John having a good laugh so did the Force players. Bryce also cost us against Cheetahs last year and the Brumbies. How he can be selected to ref the final is just a laugh really.

  • Look we had our tails up, but with Bryce breaking our momentum at any opportunity, that broke the guys confidence. We were all over the Saders, I really think with a neutral and much better ref the score wouldve been much better. Not that I say we would’ve won, but I don’t think that they would’ve dominated us as much in the second half then. But now I’m rooting for a Saders vs Reds final. They are the two teams who are going to provide the bulk of players to the Blacks and Wallabies. So let them knock the stuffing out of each other while our guys can rest/train together for an extra week.

  • @Puma (Comment 26) : I think it’s been pretty apparent since good ol’ boy Paddy O’Brein took the reins as the head of the referees at the IRB. If one looks at the stats from last year’s Tri-Nations penalties vs. yellow cards ratio it almost becomes apparent that there’s an instruction to be lenient on the ABs.

For SA and Aus, the average was that there were 4/5 penalties per yellow card while the All Blacks get an amazing 26 penalties to a card and could infringe with impunity in the ‘red-zone’ where other teams got carded.

But then we have to learn how to play to the referee a little more maybe.

But anyway I hope Lawrence gets his own red card for the final. I still believe at the end of the day the Saders might have still won it but it would have been a lot closer if the ref had been a little more neutral.

@Waje. Grow up dude. But then you’re probably a troll here trying to get a rise out of us so the only thing I have to say to you is to remind you that the only difference between WP and the Lions is that WP won a trophy two years after the Lions.

  • @KingRiaan (Comment 29) : I agree wuth you on your first part. Maybe I just watch rugby in “another light” – but there were glimpses of them resufacing and take on the challenge – I woudl say at least to 50 minutes – you know that sort of a “shit – they might just score here and get back into it” situations, only to be klapped by calls and then letting slip a try.

  • @Butchie34 (Comment 32) : Well at the wc I am hoping it is all fair. But honest after Saturday I had other thoughts. Feeling we will have no chance whoever refs us if we make it to the semi. I hope I am wrong. Don’t like to think that way.

We would have lost anyhow on Saturday. With a good ref or not. But doubt it we would have lost by that much. We did have the better of them while Alberts was on. Once he went off we kinda just lost the momentum.

Only good thing comes from Sharks and Bulls out of the tourney. Our Boks in both those teams can have a rest now. Which I think they all need.

  • i have felt all the way through this tournament that Kiwi refs have been able to create doubt and break down confidence by poor interpretation of the law at times. I even felt that the Lions were on a role against the Hurricanes when they had the rug pulled out from under them and by then had conceded about 20 pts. I am also sure just before the Crusaders last try there was a scrum I heard Lawrence blow up and reset the scrum at which time he says to Crocket your hand was on the ground ( penalty offence??) he then subsequenntly penalised the Sharks. He is immune to any form of sanction or critisizm whatsoever. That is the preserve for only Ausie and Saffa refs. Rememeber Dickenson was banished to the sidelines after the Reds/Crusaders game. Don’t get me wrong I did think he was his usual poor self, but how many time/games are Kiwi refs allowed to ruin a game without any sanction. Remember the All Blacks are probably the only team that I can remember or think of who Paddy has appologised to because of bad reffing. Ok I have had my rant. I do hope as a Ex SA person that the Stomers win, because I do want SA teams to do well in any tournament even though I have left for these Shaky Isles.

  • How many of this dodgy calls went against the sharks in the first 50mins of the game?because of that,I can’t honestky agree with “the saders would have won anyway, but the score wouldve been more respectable”.I honestly still believe if thecrucial calls went right,we couldve caused the upset.and sure,it wouldve been an upset.but these saders are beatable.we had them rattled.luckily for them, bryce lawrence was there to bail them out of a potentially embarrasing situation.

  • @robdylan (Comment 66) : What did you think of Deysel? He still seemed rusty to me, and has he lost pace? Cause he looked sluggish around the park too. Not the Deysel I remember.

  • Agree that Bryce made some idiotic calls but I still don’t buy this whole World Cup reffing conspiracy theory. Perhaps I’ll have to eat my words in the coming months but for now I’ll leave those ideas for the commentors over on the Shady Pines website.

  • @molly (Comment 73) : looks like a recurrence of a chronic shoulder injury… in short, he probably wasn’t really fit to play and was pushed.

Let’s hope his World Cup isn’t in jeopardy now.

I’ll try to find out what’s going on
