Lions lose their credit card

Reports indicate that the negotiations between the Golden Lions and Robert Gumede’s GUMA group regarding shareholding in the union have been terminated. In other words, the Lions would appear to have just lost their billionaire backer.

A tweet from the official Golden Lions Rugby Union twitter account a few minutes back reads as follows: “The GLRU confirm that negotiations around the completion of the shareholders agreement with GUMA TAC has been terminated by GUMA TAC”.

The GLRU has also issued a press release expressing regret that consensus regarding a final and binding shareholders agreement could not be reached, leading to the GUMA Group’s unilateral decision to pull out of the deal. The major stickig point appeared to be how the group’s investment would be best utilised, with the GLRU wanting to focus on structures and sustainable success, while Gumede’s sole priority was seemingly the immediate procurement of a team capable of winning a Super Rugby title.

Gumede, who famously quipped earlier this year that the Lions were “just warming up the credit card – we haven’t even needed to reach for the chequebook yet” seems to have found it a little more difficult than initially anticipated to buy a winning team. He should have done his homework… the Sharks have been trying that same trick for years!

  • It has so little to do with money and so much to do with identifying players ,retaining players and building a team ethos. Look at Griquas they punch far above their weight for a smaller union ,the cheetahs are another example. The Cheetahs have had so so many injuries that if it was any other side they would have let the rest of their season be a missery , one to forget, yet they became one of the talking points in the second half of the season. Its all about attitude and team

Don’t tell me the GLRU are the epitomy of a professional union and unfortunately it’s the players that suffer.

  • @war1 (Comment 74) : To a certain extent, yes, it is the players who suffer, but the fans suffer just as much. I know for a fact that a major sticking point was moving the franchise to new premises at Soccer City. Gumede wanted to, GLRU said no. Fact is, much as I love Ellis Park, its not in a great part of town and safety and parking is a major concern. The park and ride thing failed.

  • @SharonvanWyk (Comment 76) : It would have been better to move to Soccer city. I feel for some of the Lions fans, how many false dawns have there been. Apparently there were other investment opportunities when the Guma group was chosen so there is possibly a replacement for the role that Gumede et al played. In my opinion that would not solve the ultimate problem within the Lions and would only ever paper over the cracks.

  • @McLovin (Comment 82) : Can’t watch women play tennis. Bores me stupid. Watched a brilliant match on Saturday evening tho – Djokovic vs Baghdatis – fabulous game of tennis with thrilling, long rallies from the baseline – none of this 400mph serve and volley shite…

  • @McLovin (Comment 85) : Me too. Used to follow it in my teens and early 20s when I still played and went to Wimbledon every year. But the modern game isn’t a patch on those days when we had thrilling players with personalities. That’s why I enjoyed that match on Saturday – Baghdatis was smiling and laughing and enjoying himself… a breath of fresh air.

  • @SharonvanWyk (Comment 88) : You know what – that’s been the difference with the Sharks this season – they’ve not looked like they’ve enjoyed their rugby once, with the possible exception of the Bulls match at Loftus.

  • The whole Gumede thing seemed destined to be a match made in hell from the word go. It’s probably a good thing the Lions didn’t budge on the s/holding arrangements. Hopefully they’ll find a more accommodating partner with a similar long-term vision.

  • At least the Shareholders stood firm. Gumede’s company owns the rights to the National Stadium management. Hence him wanting to move the Lions there. Double earnings for his group.

  • @McLovin (Comment 21) :

    LOL!

It was always gonna be tough for the Williams coming back from long breaks… Sad to lose them both on the same day…

    @Salmonoid (Comment 33) :

    I’m a fan of both – but there’s something about Serena…

Both getting old so I’m looking at other talent. Liking that tall Petra Kvitova.

Back to the Lions – this is rather disappointing. I was looking forward to seeing them pull a Chelsea or Real Madrid…assembling a “strong team” but also keeping an eye on development. Long term success makes more sense than investing money on a few seasons of competitive rugby (especially in this country).

I hope the GLRU will find an investor who shares their vision.
