Boks hit by injury crisis

SARU has released a medical assessment update on the players in the training squad and it doesn’t make for pretty reading. A host of injured players have been put on intense rehabilitation programmes and aren’t up for selection for the overseas leg of the Trinations.

Team doctor, Craig Roberts, said that a number of players faced a race against time to be fit to take part in the Castle Tri-Nations but that no one had been ruled out of contention for selection for the Rugby World Cup.

“Schalk Burger and Duane Vermeulen recently sustained serious injuries and will definitely not be ready to take part but we’re hopeful that others who have had long-term injuries, such as Juan Smith, Heinrich Brüssow and Gurthrö Steenkamp, may be available at some point in the Series,” he said.

“There are a number of other players who have been playing through Vodacom Super Rugby with chronic injuries and need rehabilitation now to avoid the risk of the breaking down with longer term injuries in the near future.”

Andy Marinos, manager of National Teams for SARU, said that the medical team had taken a pragmatic approach to what is an intense International season.

“Some players have had a huge a huge amount of rugby and it shows in the wear and tear on their bodies,” said Marinos. “We’re treating them on an individual basis to make sure they are fully fit to peak at the right times this year.”

Marinos said that the Springbok squad for the Springboks’ opening two tests of the Castle Tri-Nations Series would be named on Saturday.

Injured players:
Duane Vermeulen (knee), Fourie du Preez (knee), Schalk Burger (thumb), Victor Matfield (calf and neck), Frans Steyn (ankle and back), Jaque Fourie (groin), Jean de Villiers (groin), BJ Botha (knee), Juan Smith (Achilles), Willem Alberts (shoulder), Bismarck du Plessis (shoulder), Andries Bekker (shoulder, groin and ankle), Jannie du Plessis (knee), Francois Louw (clavicle), Gurthrö Steenkamp (forearm), Francois Hougaard (ankle), Butch James (knee), JP Pietersen (back), Tendai Mtawarira (hamstring), Bryan Habana (shoulder), Bakkies Botha (knee).

Taking a look at the original squad (with the addition of Jean Deysel) these are the players we have available for the overseas leg:

  • I am sure most of these guys have been carrying these injuries most of the season. This is also a great excuse to rest the senior players, which was going to happen anyway. SARU can now also just tell SANZAR ‘look, we reeeeeaaaaaly want to play our best players as per agreement, but look, they are all hurt and on rehab’
Great way of making sure these injuries do not disrupt our WC campaign

  • @Ben (Comment 17) :

You do realise that was MY opinion, right??

Secondly, whether we win or lose on the away leg is not that relevant as long as our top players are well rested and some of the fringe players perform well (Lambie, Ruan, Danie, Aplon, etc)

But that just MY OPINION again. Use it, dont use it… ;-)

  • @Ben (Comment 41) : you see, i think you wasted alot of money on torres, rather you saved it and bought the porto striker, Falcao. Drogba not that young anymore, losing quite a bit of pace, so he should be on his horse in a year or 2`s time… i hope that torres finds his feet (not as a man utd fan), but when on song, hes certainly one of the best. Essien would be a serious blow.

Modric conducts play in the same way scholes did for utd, i think he will be quite a hit at Chelsea, in the way Xavi is at Barca.

  • @wpw (Comment 5) : IMNSHO that is a kak team! How can you play Blonde ahead of side-step De Jongh? And we all know that kick-and-chase Steyn is kak without Du Preez. And if you are going to play Spies in the team, the only place he will be of any use is on the wing! How about this XV:
    1 Greyling; 2 Smit; 3 Kruger
    4 Rossouw; 5 Muller
    6 Brussow; 7 Deysel; 8 Kanko
    9 Pienaar; 10 Lambie
    12 De Jongh; 13 Jacobs
    11 Mvovo; 14 Aplon; 15 Ndungane

Based on form Johnson should probably get the number 7 jersey. Furthermore Aplon could be moved to fullback and Basson or Ndungane placed on the left wing.
