Deysel added to Bok squad

Sharks flanker Jean Deysel has been called up to join the Springbok preliminary training squad as injury cover

It is not known at this stage whether Deysel will figure in the Springbok selection plans for the upcoming Tri-Nations tour, but with Willem Albert and Ryan Kankowski already in the picture, the Sharks’ loose forward cupboard starts to look a little bare ahead of the Currie Cup.

If all three players are withdrawn from the Currie Cup, young players like Daniel Adongo and Marcell Coetzee will have a golden opportunity to impress by filling their big shoes.

Congrats to Wollie, though! Let’s hope he sees some gametime with the Boks this season.

  • Good for Deysel. Seemed to be hitting form at the right time. Now all we need is a season where Alberts and Deysel play together from the start…

  • @shaniboi (Comment 1) : Lions, if they can keep their chins up, for them it will be more mental than anything else. As a squad they have come through a great learning environment in the Super15.

  • @war1 (Comment 7) : @Clayton(PJLD) (Comment 12) : Yeah I see what you mean. The sport24 articles says he was called up because of injuries to Alberts, Burger, Vermuelen and Smith – all big hard hitting men, a role Daniel can’t really fulfil as well as Deysel.

  • @robdylan (Comment 19) : I think most people think the same… except the the Boks coaches. Somehow they are not convinced which raises the question what do you have to do to be selected for the Boks?? Underperform?? Give away countless penalties? Wear a Bulls jersey? Seems like those three requirements are the answer in Stegmanns case.

  • congrats Jean, what a gentleman. he deserves it. bad luck with injuries, but with an extended run he could seriously become a regular springbok starter.

  • The Sharks just need to get through the early CC rounds until the extra players in the Bok squad are released and then we will be home and away for the CC.

As much as I dislike saying this, we will get a whole lot more returning players than we think we will.

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 23) : we have bulls-home, pumas-away, cheetahs-home, griekwas-away, problems-away… For our first 5 games… Not a walk in the park I’d say… Gonna be a good test for the youngsters.

  • It is going to be interesting to see what the composition of the Tri-Nations loose trio will be, but I think Deysel will be in the 22 somewhere… I feel for Daniel; but great news for Sharks Currie Cup Campaign.
