Watson to captain Kings against new-look Cheetahs

Luke Watson has been named to captain the EP Kings from eighth man as they face an experimental-looking Cheetahs outfit in a compulsory friendly in PE on Friday. Sevens star Mzwnadile Stick, who captained the Kings to their IRB Nations Cup triumph in Romania, retains his spot at fullback, but will now only be vice captain.

Coach Alan Solmons has picked up a few new acquisitions as well, the foremost of these being ex-Cheetahs scrumhalf Falie Oehlschig who has returned from the financially-troubled Stade Francais to parter yet another oll Free Stater, flyhalf Louis Strydom. I see that another old warhorse, lock-cum-loosie Wayne van Heerden has also found his way down to the bay and he’s been named on the bench alongside Jacques Engelbrecht, who was on trial with the Sharks earlier in the year and represented them in the Neo Africa Tri-Series ahead of the Super Rugby competition.

It’s the Free State Cheetahs side that’s most interesting, though, with coach Naka Drotske handing starting opportunities to many of his young stars in order to ascertain their readiness for senior rugby. It will be interesting to see Baby Bok flyhalf Johan Goosen running at inside centre, outside former Valke utility back Riaan Smit, who will partner captain Tewis de Bruyn amongst the halfbacks. Hooker Michael van Vuuren has also just returned from the IRB Junior World Championships and will want to show Drotske that he’s an able deputy to Adriaan Strauss and Skipper Badenhorst.

Eastern Province Kings: 15 Mzwandile Stick (vice-captain), 14 Norman Nelson, 13 Siyanda Grey, 12 Wayne Stevens, 11 Joe Breytenbach, 10 Louis Strydom, 9 Falie Oelschig, 8 Luke Watson (captain), 7 Devin Oosthuizen, 6 Jacques Potgieter, 5 Ross Kennedy, 4 Barend Pieterse, 3 Clint Newland, 2 Hannes Franklin, 1 Jaco Engels. Replacements: 16 Frank Herne, 17 Riaan Vermeulen, 18 Wayne van Heerden, 19 Jacques Engelbrecht, 20 Danie Faasen, 21 Shane Gates, 22 Jaco Bekker.

Free State Cheetahs: 15 Philip Burger, 14 Nico Scheepers, 13 Phillip Snyman, 12 Johan Goosen, 11 Cameron Jacobs, 10 Riaan Smith, 9 Tewis de Bruyn (captain), 8 Boom Prinsloo, 7 Pieter Labuschagne, 6 Pieter Myburg, 5 Izak van der Westhuizen, 4 Francois Uys, 3 Trevor Nyakane, 2 Michael van Vuuren, 1 Marcel van der Merwe. Replacements: 16 Schalk van der Merwe, 17 Hercu Liebenberg, 18 JC Astle, 19 Willie Britz, 20 Piet van Zyl, 21 Robbie van Schalkwyk, 22 Ryno Benjamin.

  • The Kings will be too strong for this 2nd string Cheetahs side. For a side being all about giving the region’s talent a showcase, there arent many local boys in the Kings side. But i guess thats professional sport for u!

  • @robdylan (Comment 2) : Very good team, he is making a big mistake with Goosen at 12, and a fullback at 10. I think van Vuuren will be the Deputy to Bismarck within 3years…the sharks should look at him, now…

I wish we could look at Goosen as well…and why did we not contract Groenewald???I heard province is looking to sign him…he could be a future province captain…we are messing up…rather let Abi and Botes go-they served the sharks well and are heroes, now…..that is hapening home???

  • @VanWilder (Comment 15) : agree. The last flipping thing we need is another hooker. Outside of the 3/4 guys we have in the seniors that we can’t accommodate, there’s also Malton and Hadebe in u21s.

I didn’t think much of van Vuuren at the JWC anyway.

I do agree with you however because we have Burden and Brown, who are good hookers themselves, we don’t need to buy and replace them with a hooker from the Cheetahs.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 20) : look at SA Schools centre Andile Jho who was @ Dale and basically said he doesn’t care what they want to build @ the Kings, he sees his careeer flourishing at the Bulls, and good for him.

same with Wandile Mjekevu, who started @ Dale prep, then to Selborne and was offered a “scholarship/bursary” to KES and now turnout for the Lions.

Siya Kolisi, Grey High eighthman/openside, SASchools, Baby Boks is at WP.

Kurt Coleman, Grey High flyhalf, is at WP

before the Kings Academy was formed EPRU had not been in touch with the local schools in 5 years, Alan Miles the Grey High DoR was flabbergasted when he got a call from Cheeky & Robbie Kempson inquiring about some of the players at Grey because he’d never been contacted by the union before.

Now, Danie Gerber & Kempson regularly make trips all arounf the EC to keep up on the progress of some of the boys they’ve earmarked for the academy.

  • If the Kings academy is up and running then that is fantastic, I admit I dont know much about the structures but just looked at the team. I also realise that neither the Sharks/Bulls/WP have a majoirty of guys that come from the region but in saying that those franchises have been ‘more professional’ for longer and thus it is inevitable that the country’s best are at these unions irrespective where they are from. It is also the reason so many Sharks academy guys like KZN as they cant crack the senior side because there are so many established starts. Smaller unions usually do contain a large number of ‘local’ guys thats why i made the comment about the Kings composition. But again the more success they get the more guys will stick around.

I got to speak to Mbhembe Payi last night. Great kid. Very humble – totally unexpected based on his onfield showstopping antics.
I also didn’t realise that Sanele Nanto also hails from the EC. He’s done really well to make the KZN schools team, coming out of out of George Campbell.

  • Ref comments 18 and 19 – by all accounts van vuuren had a fiery currie cup debut in pe last night vs kings. told that he was in the faces of his older and more experienced opponents, wasn’t scared to trade blows, made a try saving tackle and put in some huge hits. led to believe that he even had a verbal with luke. when considering that he was the youngest or second youngest on the field – to stand up to likes of engels, watson and co this kid has a great future. so to van der merwe and goosen – definite candidates for the sharks and bok jersey – cheetahs have a big job on their hands holding onto these 3.
