Sharks to back Bresler

Every cloud has a silver lining, so they say and it seems that, with the unexpected departure of Gerhard Mostert to France, something that we have been clamouring for for the longest time looks set to happen; the Sharks will look within their youth ranks to replace the departing lock forward.

Sharks CEO Brian van Zyl yesterday told www.sharksrugby.co.za that the Sharks “won’t be looking to sign any new locks. We still have Ross Skeate and Alistair Hargreaves and we want to develop young locks like Anton Bresler and Jandre Marais.” The Bresler and Skeate combination, which will get its first hit-out as a combo when the Sharks XV take on SWD in a friendly later today, will be the first-choice pairing when the Currie Cup gets under way next weekend, with the talented young Marais sure to provide cover off the bench.

The return of Hargreaves from Springbok duty – possibly after the Tri-Nations away leg, will further strengthen the squad’s locking options.

“It’s a blow losing two locks in Steven Sykes and Gerhard Mostert,” Coach John Plumtree aid to Sharksrugby, “but it gives us a chance to develop the young talent and that’s what we will be doing in the Currie Cup.”

This development is great news for the likes of Bresler and Marais, both of whom have come all the way through the Sharks system from under 19 level and fought their way up through under 21 and Vodacom Cup ranks. Let’s hope this Currie Cup can be the start of a sea change for the Sharks, with more emphasis placed on youth development than on acquisition of ready-made talent who might not always have the same love for the jersey. Good work, Sharks!

  • I’m all for developing young players but it does concern me that the Sharks doesn’t seem to be ‘shopping’ at all. With all the departing players the Sharks should have some funds available for 1 or 2 big signings.

Did the Sharks spend all their money on Joubert and Michelak or are they financially in trouble?

    Just wondering.

  • @Pokkel (Comment 1) : maybe they’re opting to invest the cash in getting the youth structures right again?

We don’t always have to look for the problem in every solution :)

  • And when he gets injured? The Sharks must have super players that they don’t need to invest in backup.

  • @robdylan (Comment 2) : Haven’t many been moaning about the Sharks not investing in their youth? But isn’t it important to keep some experienced players to guide and mentor the youngsters so you don’t have a mess like the Lions have. Where the Sharks miss the point is they wait for someone to leave or get injured before giving a youngster a chance, instead of playing them while having the safety of a good player on the bench. Bresler will do well during the Currie Cup, no doubts. But it would be nice to have cover on the bench.

  • It’s important that we start backing our youth, but for the depth required for a succesful Super Rugby campaign, I feel we will need to do some recruitment. Wonder how Johann Muller’s been playing; if on form, it wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world if he could spend a season with us again, acting as mentor to the young ‘uns.

I actually think the departure of Sykes and Mostert opens the door for Marais to establish himself as a senior player with the Sharks.

Despite what van Zyl says, I won’t put it past the Sharks to buy a bit of experience with bulk at the end of the season to ensure that we are adequately covered for next year’s SR campaign.
