Western Province plunged into lock crisis

The news that fiery number 4 Rynhardt Elstadt has ruled himself out of rugby for 3 months will add further to the insomnia sure to be plaguing Western Province forwards coach Matt Proudfoot as he looks to the upcoming Currie Cup season, which kicks off against Griquas on Friday. Elstadt’s knee injury will seriously weaken a Province tight five that needs to step up and show its mettle this season after being dismantled (in Stormers guise) by the Crusaders in the Super Rugby semi-final 10 days ago.

Bearing in mind that the other first choice lock, Andries Bekker, is with the Springbok group and that his regular deputy, Anton van Zyl has headed off to Paris, Proudfoot and head coach Alister Coetzee are already looking very thin in the second row department, with only De Kock Steenkamp available as an experienced option in the number 5 jersey. They would have hoped to temper that by retaining the Super Rugby form and experience of Elstadt, but with him also out, it looks like the forgotten man Adriaan Fondse may come back into the picture.

With Province publicly stating that they will back their youth system and focus on development this Currie Cup, the door has now been opened for Baby Bok lock Eben Etzebeth to come into the Currie Cup squad as bench cover for Fondse and Steenkamp.

Elstadt’s injury will come as a real blow, though, as his ability to play blindside flank would also have added real depth to a WP loose trio that will be missing regular starters in Schalk Burger, Francois Louw and Duane Vermeulen.

  • What about the mighty Quinn Roux who often tries to reenact a game of tenpin on the rugby field, with him as the bowling bowl and defenders as the pins?

    And also Reniel Hugo???

  • @wpw (Comment 5) : It’ll most likely be De Kock and Fondse to start, I’m more worried about the flyhalf crisis. ;-)

  • @Salmonoid (Comment 10) : what’s wrong with that? By injuring himself, he has ruled himself out of playing?
