Now that we are on the brink of CC2011, let’s take a peek at what happened a year ago.
CC2010 Log:
Team Wins Points
Sharks 10 52
WP 10 48
Cheetahs 10 47
Blue Bulls 9 47
The Sharks started their campaign with a game that left a bad taste in the mouths of their supporters, by losing to Griquas(40-34) in Kimberley, and we thought “here we go again”. We then had the Bulls(34-28) and the Pumas(27-10) at home and won both, without convincing anyone that this team was on their way to glory. Next up was the Cheetahs and after a really bad run of late against the Bloemfonteiners, things were tense within the supporter ranks. That game changed the slow start to the season because after the victory(13-25) in the Vrystaat the Sharks picked up momentum and won 7 from their next 9 games, losing only to the Bulls and the Lions away. After securing a home semifinal/final the Sharks opted to send a “b-team” to Newlands and the youngsters put up a good fight but went down to WP 33-21.
Scoring the most(62) tries for the season and building up an advantage of bonus points, they ended up on top of the log and had to face The Enemy(Bulls) in Durban for the semifinal. A nervous but VERY satisfying victory(16-12) saw them facing the last hurdle Western Province and even in Natal we could not believe where all the Province supporters all of a sudden came from. What else can we say than WHAT A GAME!!!!! We swept the floor with those “blue and white stripes” to stand victorious by 30-10. THE SHARKS CURRIE CUP CHAMPIONS 2010 (in the year of soccer).
And let’s not forget a new star rose to the occasion PATRICK LAMBIE……. Only Willem de Waal scored more points in the season(220) but Lambie(205) and his team took home the silverware.
Another star from Griquas was “born” by breaking the record for most tries within a season, Bjorn Basson, with our own young star Lwazi Mvovo(12) on his heels(ok not so close).
And just to show that CC does still breed the stars Lambie, Basson and Mvovo are all packing their bags to represent SA in the Tri-Nations.
Looking forward to Currie Cup 2011. Oh Yeaaaaa!!!!! GO SHARKS!!!! BRING IT HOME no KEEP IT HOME!!!!!

@JarsonX (Comment 1) : Fond memories that I unfortunately wasn’t able to see live, had to catch the highlights…
But still the image of Lambie handing off the incredible Schalk
will long live in my memory as one of the best rugby moments I ever witnessed!!!
Still gives me goosebumps just thinking about it…
@The Sharks Sharkie (Comment 5) : ooooh yea, have to agree
@franshark (Comment 3) :
ITM scores are posted on the ITM preview thread..
@The Sharks Sharkie (Comment 5) : I’d love to see Lambie handing off Spies, SBW and Andries Strauss
@JarsonX (Comment 8) : Lambie handing off Spies, I won’t even raise my eyebrows. Spies is overrated and has no physicality what-so-ever.
As for SBW, well I think that might get my a little excited.
And finally Andries Strauss… well I think Lambie can consider himself lucky that he is with the Boks and doesn’t have to face Strauss
@The Sharks Sharkie (Comment 9) : A hand off on Spies at Loftus will be great for 1 reason, the imitation SPIIIEEESSS chant.
Spies is only big, strong and fast but his handeling and defence sh#@t
@Mutley (Comment 11) : No Spies is fast and looks big. As for the strong part that only applies when lifting weights in the gym
@JarsonX (Comment 10) :
Yeah that would be funny. I reckon the Loftus crowd will adapt a LAAMBBIEEE chant after that!
@Richard Ferguson (Comment 7) : thanks saw that
@The Sharks Sharkie (Comment 13) :
hehehe I remember that first match in KY very well. Made some money on Sportsbet!
