Springbok lock forward Andries Bekker will undergo ankle surgery on Tuesday and has consequently been ruled out of contention for the Rugby World Cup.

The 27-year-old, 2.08m lock was one of a number of players who missed selection for the Springboks’ first Castle Tri-Nations squad of the season because of injury. Following further evaluation it has been decided that Bekker requires surgery.

“We have sought a number of expert opinions over the past two weeks and the decision was taken that Andries required surgery now to safeguard his long-term rugby career,” said Springbok team doctor, Dr Craig Roberts. “He ruptured an ankle tendon during the Vodacom Super Rugby season.”

Bekker will undergo surgery in Cape Town on Tuesday.

Meanwhile another lock forward, Johann Muller, returns to South Africa on Sunday, having been ruled out of the tour because of a hamstring strain.

Muller was named in the Springbok team to meet Australia in Sydney on Saturday, but, following further evaluation on Thursday, it was decided that the injury had not healed sufficiently.

A replacement will be named in due course.

  • Not great news, not at all. Hargreaves seems set for a WC place, who else for backup?

  • Not good news.
Very concerning that the full extent of the injury is only picked up now, ditto for Johan Muller going to Oz only to come right back again.

  • Bad news this. Bekker is a massive loss. We gonna be short at 5. Only Hargreaves really behind Victor.

They better wrap Victor in cotton wool for the 3N home leg. We just can’t afford to lose him to injury.

  • Just hope Hargreaves don’t pick up a injury in those awful conditions tomorrow that is forecast for Sydney.

Heck we short there. How is Muller? Wonder how bad his injury is?

Must say if Hargreaves can play like he done against the Bulls like he done at Loftus and when we played them in the CC semi. He will be just fine as back up. But need him to be at that level consistently.

  • @Puma (Comment 4) : guess the Sharks can forget about getting Hargs back this season. Skeate may turn out to be a very good signing yet

  • @robdylan (Comment 6) : For sure. We won’t be getting Hargreaves back. He will be in the Bok squad.

Agree, damn pleased we have Skeate now.

  • Danie can be backup and it then opens an extra Looseforward spot.

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 9) : Also with Bekker not available now. Think PdV should now concentrate on another 7. Start with Deysel next week for starters. Once back home play Alberts there.

Don’t think we must play Danie at 7 rather use him at 4 or 5 if needed.

Actually I prefer Danie at 4 than Bakkies. Bakkies gonna give away too many penalties and probably yellow cards.

  • Not sorry about this – the only thing that makes Bekker stand out is his height. We have better players who are stronger physically and mentally.

As much as I dislike Bekker for being an arrogant cheating tosser, he is without a doubt a brilliant lock forward. We will miss him dearly should Victor get injured during the RWC.

  • @wpw (Comment 11) : Hey Wes I hope you get to read this.
Michael van der Spuy was at Grey Bloem at the same time as the likes of Reinach, Franna du Toit, Lindeque, Venter and Riaan Britz. In fact I’ve even watched him play without taking much notice of him. Reason: he played the odd game for the 2nd XV and did quite a bit of 3rd team duty at school.
However he obviously did enough to catch the attention of the WP institute guys. I think they signed him. He was a regular in the WP u19 side last year playing outside centre alongside Sam Lane with SA Sch flyhalf William van Wyk at no.10. He really wasn’t anything to write home about last year tho. However at the start of this season when Dawie Theron was putting together a JWC squad, MvdS was selected for the WP invitation team that kicked the butts of the u20 players. Michael stood out and even had an ex-Bok stating that he’d be a Springbok one day. So he’s another of these guys who’s made massive improvements in the last year.

I think Sam Lane is injured at present so it will be interesting to see what happens when he gets back in terms of who fits in where in the WP u21. But in my books MvdS looks like hot property. I’m definitely keeping him on my radar. He’s a very exciting player to watch.

Personally I think the Sharks should keep a tag on just about the whole WP u21 side this year. There are some really good players there that look set to go far in senior rugby.

I’m even thinking that instead of a beanie, you’ll be wearing one of those trendy looking Puma scrumcaps.

  • @wpw (Comment 22) : I hardly watched any of the Varsity Cup this year. I think I remember him from last year tho. A small quick player but not too young. He was good last year but my opinion was that he’d stuggle to cut it at a higher level. He’s obviously gotten better in 2011?

  • He is training with the WP CC side but I think you may be right – he is a bit on the small side.

He was however POTY when Maties won their first VC title (2009 I think) but I think his call up has more to do with Paul Dobson’s current involvement due to him being his previous coach at UCT.
