De Villiers denies fake injuries

Sam Worthington reports on Stuff.co.nz that embattled Springboks coach Peter de Villiers is standing by his claims that 21 of his top players are genuinely injured and is denying a report they are at a secret training camp.

The under-strength world champions touched down in Wellington today ahead of Saturday’s Tri-Nations test against the All Blacks at Westpac Stadium, still licking their wounds from the 39-20 loss to Australia in Sydney.

De Villiers denied a report from South African rugby journalist Mark Keohane which claimed newly appointed technical director Rassie Erasmus was working with the so-called injured players at a pre-World Cup camp in Rustenburg.

“So-called is not the right word to use, they’re injured,” de Villiers said.

“We know that the long Super 15 season is the cause of this and we just have to abide by that. They’re not training. It [the report] doesn’t surprise me because there’s always mischief everywhere.”

The All Blacks are also resting players this week – key forwards Keven Mealamu, Kieran Read, Brad Thorn and Owen Franks. A decision de Villiers unsurprisingly supported.

“Graham Henry is a sensible coach and person. So I think that they know how to manage the players and the workload. Everybody is entitled to their opinion, it’s when opinions become fact that you have to listen. It’s only opinion but you take it as it comes.”

The always entertaining de Villiers, who Keohane described as “embarrassing,” appeared confused when asked if it was disrespectful to leave the best players out of test matches.

“What do you mean by best players? The guys here at the moment, they performed in South Africa, in Super 15. There’s a few guys who didn’t make it that were also the best in Super 15. So best is a relative thing.”

De Villiers merrily continued down his cryptic path when the inquisitor replaced the word “best” with “experience”.

“Experience, then I’ll play Naas Botha too because he’s helluva experienced. The guys that have actually performed, we’ve just rewarded them for their contributions to the game. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with it.”

The coach said he hoped to be able to name a fit side tomorrow and while supportive of playing the Tri-Nations in a World Cup year, believed the restructured Super Rugby competition was placing too much pressure on players.

“The Tri-Nations is a good thing, it’s the best preparation you can get for the World Cup because the best teams in the world are there. So it’s not a bad thing, but coming off the back of a long Super 15, it might just be a bit too harsh on the players.”

The All Blacks are expected to name a strong side tomorrow and the TAB has them at $1.12 favourites to open their Tri-Nations campaign with a win.

South Africa are at $5.50 and if you listen to de Villiers that’s good money.

“As a coach you’re always there to want to win, your pride is always there and we’re a proud nation. Every test is a very important test for us so we won’t come here just to give them the minutes. We want to be competitive in world rugby and we badly want to be No 1.”

De Villiers hoped that some senior players would be fit to return for the Springboks’ home Tri-Nations games and said the team would be better for the loss in Sydney.

“We hope so, I don’t think that we want to remember the game in Sydney too long because of the contribution of the players themselves. But then again the leadership in the team itself wasn’t that good and you know you needed experience just to keep them composed, especially at the next level. But I hope that one week’s experience will be enough for them to stand up for themselves.”

  • They probably are in Rustenberg – there is nothing to stop them from being re-conditoneed – and even using their brains.

Hate the way PDV took no responbility for Saturday, just threw his players under ths bus. Seriously can’t wait for him to go!

  • @Just a Fan (Comment 2) : @Just a Fan (Comment 2) : you guys are a disgrace!!!! the players are not 100% fit because they’ve been played to the ground, now are they supposed to sit still in crutches? is it a crime if they get together and the conditioning team are monitoring their progress?

  • I see some paranoia creeping into both the Aussie and Kiwi camps.
The Aussies seem to think we’re trying to get one up on them and the Kiwis seem to be in a knot about something as banal as England daring to wear black jerseys. A master-stroke by the English I might add. Anything to work up an already pressured ABs team in a WC year!

It does seem Henry and co see the ridiculous situation of playing a 3N a month before the WC for what it is – ridiculous.

More on topic; what defines “injured”? Most players carry injuries all season long.

  • Jake White took this team to Australia & NZ in 2007:

    South Africa – 15-JP Pietersen; 14-Breyton Paulse, 13-Waylon Murray, 12-Wynand Olivier, 11-Jaco Pretorius; 10-Derick Hougaard, 9-Ruan Pienaar; 8-Jacques Cronje, 7-Pedrie Wannenburg, 6-Wikus van Heerden, 5-Johann Muller (c), 4-Albert van den Berg; 3-Jannie du Plessis, 2-Bismarck du Plessis, 1-CJ van der Linde.
    Subs: 16-Gary Botha, 17-Eddie Andrews, 18-Gerrie Britz, 19-Hilton Lobberts, 20-Michael Claassens, 21-Peter Grant, 22-Tonderai Chavhanga.

and they got BELTED 33 – 6 in Christchurch!, who remembers that game? Jake White finished his career having NEVER won in NZ, who cares about that little funfact?

the money hungry suckers at Sanzar are going to be the DEATH of southern hemisphere rugby!

Dude, Keo along with the rest of the lot.

I would include Tank in that as well.

One would expect them to back the Bok management team during this crucial period but instead they attack them from every side.
