Griquas confirm Viljoen’s Sharks move

Griquas CEO Arni van Rooyen today confirmed to rugby365 that star fullback Riaan Viljoen has signed to play for the Sharks next season.

The move was hinted at in a Sunday newspaper a few weeks back, but at that stage, Viljoen’s agent insisted that no deal had yet been done – this despite information that we had from within the Griquas camp that Viljoen had committed his future to Durban. Van Rooyen’s confirmation is probably about as much further proof as we need to say with certainty that Viljoen will be a Shark in 2012.

Viljoen’s agent, James Adams, has just confirmed via text message that the player has signed a 2-year deal with the Sharks, effective 1 November.

Other players confirmed as leaving Griquas before next season are scrumhalf Sarel Pretorius (Waratahs), flank Davon Raubenheimer and centre Barry Geel (both Cheetahs).

  • I think Viljoen is a decent player and when he is on form he is miles better than the overrated Ludik.
He offers another goal kicking option and is the only other SA player able to kick long distance drop goals the way Frans Steyn can.
He is NOT a bad signing imo.

  • @KingRiaan (Comment 7) : What is he gone? Where to? The one player I thought that can attack, which is the problem with Ludik – zero attacking. Now they bought Viljoen – another case of ill judgement. What can Viljoen add?, I think he won’t fit in. Does anyone know who signs for the Sharks – he/she must be a expert on rugby. The one poor decision after the other. What will happen with Prinsloo in 2012, or is he still u21?

We have enough good young talent in KZN, why go and buy all the “has beens”???

Let’s ALL remember that the Sharks academy is just like any college and in fact the educational side IS Varisty college. A lot of players who go there are NOT on bursaries from the Sharks and are actually just paying their own way through college.

Not everyone who leaves the academy is someone who the Sharks have invested money in.

  • @war1 (Comment 18) : The problem is that a lot of people think anyone who goes to varsity college is a future star. it is just a “wing” of varsity college that gives the coaches at the Sharks an oppertunity to get their hands on some players early on.

As I said not everyone at the academy is invited there, on a bursary or a future star.

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 21) : This in itself is a problem because there are many involved in KZN rugby who feel that the Academy is too much of a money making scheme and not enough of a feeder system for the Sharks.

I don’t know the workings of the Academy so I don’t want to pass any of this off as fact but I’ve been told of dissatisfaction with the institution coz kids who’s dad’s have deep pockets get places ahead of genuine rugby talents who have a future in the game.

With so many new opportunities being created for talented young players elsewhere in SA, I’m sure the Sharks are working hard on upgrading their own recruitment strategy. With ZRA gone, they probably have to create an absolute minimum of 10 new places per year for kids good enough to play junior CC rugby.

One thing this signing well surely spell is the end of Stefan come 2012 coz Riaan can cover no.13 as well.

  • If I’m correct Odwa used to play 13 before being moved to the wing. His lacking outright pace to play wing these days, but I think he will be more than fast enough for 13. Remember not all players pop into heroes at a young age ala Lambie, Steyn and Coetzee. At lock I back Bresler, and the Marais brothers to be stars for years to come still. The Cronje lighty at scrumhalf is finally starting to show his potential and prop we set for the next few years as well. Wings are easy to bring into the game at a young age. At loose forward we have more than enough depth. Just can’t wait for Lindeque and co to make the step up at centre.

With Mvovo and JPP setting the mark at wing, surely Odwa and Ludik are fighting for the 15 jersey? Do we really need another stable, unexciting option at 15?

Welcome Riaan….I sure all these naysayers will be cheering you on all the way next year when you start creating some of your magic in the backline. The odd 60m penalty to win a game will make you the hero of Kingspark.

  • Good signing, its going to add depth in what is going to be a loooong Super 15 next year. With the amount of rugby that is being played players are more likely to suffer injuries, short or long term, and any team that has cover 3 or even 4 deep will be at an advantage.

  • @Pokkel (Comment 39) : cant believe it either. this is a good signing. Mvovo, Pietersen and ndungane on the wings and ludick and viljoen at the back, and both can play wing aswell.

i personally think were abit thin on the wing, with our next crop coming through would be richards and co.

richards played well the last few games, but think his got som way to go before demanding a superrugby spot. our backline failed in this years superrugby comp, this would certainly help.

  • I think this is a great signing as he is a quality fullback with a big boot. And he can play flyhalf if needed, and we all knoe JLP isnt going to stick around long. I also think Ludick has played his best rugby on the wing but with Mvovo and Pieterson I feel a shift to 13 for Ludick would do him a world of good. And there was talk of him moving to 13 when he was at the Lions. For those that moan about youngsters not getting a chance, this is professional rugby1 Its not primary school where every kid gets a chance. if you want to play then force your way in by proving you are better!

  • Some interesting stats from the SR season regarding fullback.
A number of rugby sites, including sharksworld had a regular ‘Team of the Week’. Among them sharksworld and SARugby limited the picks to SA players only, and Rugby365 ran one that included all SR players.
The overall picks for fullback were:
    Sharksworld:
Riaan Viljoen was selected 6 times
Jaco Taute and Louis Ludik 4 each
    SARugby:
    Riaan Viljoen 5 picks
Jaco Taute, Gio Aplon and Zane Kirchner 2 each
    Rugby365:
Riaan Viljoen 1 pick, the only time over the whole competition that an SA player was picked at fullback

  • @Ossa (Comment 74) : Haha I’m on the right. The guy on the left is my best friend Zandre. He was in matric with me but then decided he was going to do his matric over. Meaning he would have been in matric with you as well.

  • Viljoen is a good signing I think. Cause now we won’t see Lambie being moved back to fb.

Somehow we should have tried to keep Mostert. We also need centres. Bosman just not up to it at all.

@robdylan (Comment 69) : Good to hear Hoffman will be back.
