Burly ball-carrier Jacques Potgieter, who is just one of a raft of loose forwards who came up through the Sharks age-group ranks, only to leave due to a lack of playing time, has been snapped up by the Bulls ahead of next season’s Super Rugby competition.
The 25-year-old Potgieter, who attended school in Uitenhage in the Easter Cape prior to moving to Durban to attend the Sharks Academy, found himself on the sidelines a little more often than he’d like to be once reaching the senior ranks and opted to pursue his career back in his home town when moving to Easter Province after the 2009 Vodacom Cup.
He has established himself as a fixture in the Kings side over the last 18 months, in particular emerging as one of the key players in that side’s triumph in the IRB Nations Cup earlier this year. The Bulls have signed him on a two-year deal to bolster a forward pack suddenly devoid of ball-carrying options in the pack given the departure of Danie Rossouw and Bakkies Botha to foreign teams.
The 1.94m Potgieter, while best at blindside flank, is equally comfortable in the second row. He will join up with the Bulls at the completion of his Currie Cup First Division commitments to the Kings, who the way they are playing now may well go on to win the title.

I thought the Bulls didn’t buy players they developed the
