Plumtree awarded (again)

Am I the only one who thinks they should just rename the “ABSA Currie Cup Coach of the Month Award” the “John Plumtree Cup”? That’s right, folks, Hawera’s finest son has won the coveted cup yet again, after steering a very green Sharks team to three good wins (and one horrible loss) in the competition’s opening month.

The Lions are the big losers, despite topping the log and remaining the only unbeaten side. Not only did their man, John Mitchell, lose out to his good mate in the battle for Coach of the Month, but they have also just released the Player of the Month, Jano Vermaak, to join the Blue Bulls with immediate effect. For those who missed out on the news, Vermaak was accused of dishonest dealing with his current employers when signing a deal to play for the Bulls next year. So great was the Lions’ anger that they opted to dump Vermaak forthwith. It was today announced that he’ll join the Bulls for the rest of the season.

Let’s hope the drop from the very summit of the log to its very foot doesn’t bruise his ego too much!

All jokes aside, though, we’d like to congratulate Plummo and Vermaak on their awards, both of which were handed out at a glittering ceremony in Durban today.

  • Btw as far as I know you are only allowed to play for one team in the Currie cup. Will Jano be allowed to play for the Blue Bulls in the Currie cup?

  • If its not their player contracts that are dodgy its their behaviour towards their assets/players.
I’ll repeat what I’ve always said, the Lions are the most unprofessional union in SA.

  • 14.2 A player may not be transferred more than once during a specific competition.

It seems he will be allowed to play for the Bulls.

15.3 A player transferred to a new province has to be available for selection for the new province for at least the last 5 (five) pool matches immediately prior to a semi-final -, final -or promotion / relegation match, as the case may be, in order to be eligible to participate in a semi-final -, final -or promotion/relegation match for the new province.

The Bulls won’t be allowed to use their Boks for their promotion relegation match though. ;-)

  • @Greg (Comment 13) : Remember that this is coach of the month for July. Meaning last weekend’s results don’t count. Plum’s side beat the Bulls, Pumas and Cheetahs. Mitch’s side beat the Pumas, Griquas and Leopards. It is well deserved. Plum has not gotten off to a good start in the race for coach of the month for August though.

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 10) : “available for selection” isn’t the same thing as “selected”… quite interesting.

If they’d applied that during the Super Rugby fiasco, then Swannie would have been able to play in the knock-out.

  • @Megatron (Comment 23) :
I hear your point, but I think they are merely observing a trend here.

One swallow doth not a Summer make, but Vermaak is just another in an exhaustive litany of name; we all know them.

My take on this is simply that the Lions have lost a super player – with Gumede gone, one can’t say it will end here.

the Sharks are always saying if a guy wants to go let him go . This is exactly what we did dindt we.

it seems John Mitchell is fixing a few things at the lions but some players (Read ‘Old guard’) are not buying into this . you dont really want players in your team who doesnt buy into the coaches plans

  • Reinach is not getting any gametime in cc(how many mins has he been afforded?). Plus he must compete with 3 others ahead of hgim.this is his last year at u21 if I’m not mistaken.will he still be in dbn 2012?
Want to see what hoffman brings to the team-wasnt half gad before the unfortunate injury.then again, macleod on form and in form is a super scrummie!
Do you see a future for reinach at the sharks post his under 21 days?

  • @bergshark (Comment 29) : why wouldn’t Reinach have a future? The fact that they’ve been prepared to give him Currie Cup gametime when still under 21 is a huge indication that they value him.

  • macleod was called up to bok training camp and went on tour with boks.
    Hoffman was out injured.
Had to put a reserve scrummie on the bench,so they decicded on reinach.but how many mins were he given in those matches?not enough to show that they actually rate him as being close to ross(at three in the pecking order of sharks 9s)imho.
Now next year stefan ungerer will join the sharks.

  • @bergshark (Comment 33) : yes, but Ungerer is 17… let’s not get carried away with thinking he’s ahead of Reinach in the pecking order.

There’s actually not much wrong, IMO, with letting guys who are 20 years old play under 21 rugby and letting guys who are 22 play for the seniors.

  • Except if the 20year old in the under 21 team is miles ahead of the 22 year old in the senior team ( not in anyway saying this is the case with cronje and reinach.better player should play-form and ability to select team ,not seniority,I’d say).
