Sharks to back Boks against Province

Media reports today suggest the strong likelihood that Sharks coach John Plumtree will select all of the returning Springboks available to him for Saturday’s crunch clash against Western Province at Newlands. Seven players were released to the Sharks after the away leg of the Tri-Nations, with one in Ryan Kankowski recalled to the Bok squad for this weekend’s game against Australia.

Winger Lwazi Mvovo and centre Adi Jacobs are carrying injuries and will need to pass fitness tests this week, while Alistair Hargreaves, Charl McLeod, Patrick Lambie and Odwa Ndungane all look set to feature in the starting lineup as the Sharks aim to win against their Cape rivals for the first time this year. Alister Coetee’s men, in their regional Stormers guise, smashed the Sharks twice in Super Rugby this year and one feels that it’s vital for the Durbanites to overturn those results this weekend.

“We’ll definitely get those guys back into it this weekend,” Plumtree said, according to a SAPA report, “I think everyone would be expecting that. We need to go with our experience, if we can, for the visit to Newlands.” Not that Plumtree is blaming his young players – many of whom have been impressive as the Sharks surged to three opening victories, for last week’s bad loss against Griquas, though. According to the coach, a number of the senior players have also been “spoken to” after disappointing outings in Kimberley.

While the return of a few battle-hardened players is always a good thing, Plumtree’s problem is that he’s not really getting people back in the positions where he lacks depth. Most of the Bok returnees are either outside backs or halfbacks and while Charl McLeod’s return at scrumhalf is welcome, given the injury to Conrad Hoffmann, the coach is faced with a real dilemma as to how to shoehorn Fred Michalak and Lambie into the same starting lineup. Moving Lambie to fullback, while tempting, will mean no room for Louis Ludik, one of the few players to impress against Griquas. Thoughts of accommodating the latter on the wing must be shelved too, with Mvovo, Ndungane, Mark Richards and Sbura Sithole all already in the mix for the two spots available. Jacobs will presumably vie for the outside centre with Stefan Terblanche and Marius Joubert, neither of whom has been in good form recently, while the oft-pedestrian Meyer Bosman now appears to have no pressure at all on his number 12 jersey.

Options in the pack are, however, limited and with the Sharks being shown up at forward against Griquas, Plumtree will secretly be ruing the fact that the Boks saw fit to return all of his wingers, but not a single prop or loose forward. Hargreaves and Ross Skeate will return to bolster the second row, but both are too similar to be picked in combination, one would feel.

  • It will be very interesting to see the line up, I just think it time to end our midfield run of bad form and replace both players.. Mich at 12 and adi at 13, (but what’s the chance of that happening)

  • I’d play this backline – but Plum won’t drop Oupa Stef unfortunately:

    9 McCloed
    10 Michalak
    11 Sithole
    12 Lambie
13 Jacobs / Terblanche (if Jacobs is still injured)
    14 Richards
    15 Ludik

Not a bad backline IMHO. Mvovo and Ndungane sit out because I think the young wingers have played well enough to deserve a starting spot IMO.

  • I prefer stef at outside centre…it is not going to be an easy match. I must say that whilst watching wp against ovs the flyhalf for province impressed me and is one to watch with jantjiees of lions. Plum is a wise old fart and Mcintosh i bet throws in a few pointers…i think stef will retire at end of season but never ill treat an old dog. His experience is priceless and stef has won us many a match.

  • @Megatron (Comment 9) : More like 0-1 against Molls. She should have said the Baby Bok team of 2010. The semi-final-less 2011 team that didn’t exactly pave themselves in glory.

Go MARCELL COETZEE!!! What a player you are. Everyone knows you should have been the first player picked for the SA u20 team this year.

You ask what has Marcell done? Well for starters he plays for a team who hypes up their players like its nobody’s business.
    e.g. 3D Pat, SuperPat,Keegan Daniels?

  • @wpw (Comment 12) : that is so rich ,wp fans think every player of theirs should be a bok ,even your front row! On keo once i saw a bloger use blauws handling skill as the difference between him and most of the sharks front row!According to wp fans skeate should have been a bok ahead of guys like ackerman and muller -still now players (who in my opinion will be found wanting sooner than later; guys like aplon and de joghn-should be incumbents ahead of de villiers/jf and frans steyn) . Elstadt and kolisi the next in a long line of wp mustbebokswithoutdoubt ,perhaps the sadest thing is a player like nick koster doesnt get the recognition he deserves-oh did i mention dwaynethemullet?
