Cheetahs coach Naka Drostske has been forced to reshuffle his backline for this weekend’s game against the Lions, with both Andries Strauss and Hennie Daniller ruled out through injury. In an interesting move, Ashley Johnson has been included at number 8, indicating that he will not be in action for the Boks this weekend.

Johnson, along with Sharks loose forward Ryan Kankowski, was called up to the Bok squad on Monday as cover for two loose forwards struggling with injury, Danie Rossouw and Pierre Spies. Our information is that the Sharks still have no clarity regarding Kankowski’s availability, but will pick him if he is released. Johnson must now have been giving the green light to play for the Cheetahs.

Corne Uys has been brought in at inside centre to cover for the injured Strauss, while a back three reshuffle sees Riaan Smit switch to fullback for Daniller and Philip Snyman come in on the right wing.

  • This match against the Lions will be pretty interesting.

The Lions may be unbeaten, but they have a tough few weeks with the Cheetahs this weekend, and then Province and the Sharks..

  • Interesting that Tewis got dropped, I thought he was a Naka favourite.

Another player who has had his fair share of chances..

The other teams seem to follow where Province and the Sharks are going with putting faith in youngsters ahead of seasoned average players..

  • @Zibbie (Comment 4) : surely Dylan Des Fountain is a better 13? I like Mapoe but he’s a winger in my eyes.

  • Well done to Nico Scheepers on his call up to the senior team.

I wonder if he’s in any way related to Eben Scheepers, the old Vrystaat wing.

  • @Zibbie (Comment 6) : oh, maybe he was only on loan for SR. Hopefully Mapoe will do well at 13.
