Brüssow starts as A-team come out to play

The Springbok team to face the Wallabies in Durban this Saturday has been announced and there are a few surprises in the starting line-up, first being that Heinrich Brüssow has been selected in the starting fifteen.

He will compete in the loose trio with Danie Rossouw and Pierre Spies, in a mobile yet aggressive set of loosies. The pack is as we all expected with Beast Mtawarira and Jannie Du Plessis packing down either side of John Smit in the front row, with Bakkies Botha and Victor Matfield locking in behind them.

The backline should show a massive improvement from the previous outings, with Fourie du Preez back in the scrumhalf jersey, combining with Butch James to make up the half backs. The centres are the best South Africa have, in Jean de Villiers and Jacque Fourie, and with wingers like Bryan Habana and JP Pietersen outside them, this backline is looking fantastic.

Frans Steyn completes the starting fifteen, back in the team after an extended period where different fullbacks were tried to no great effect.

The bench is much stronger as well with Bismarck du Plessis and Gurthro Steenkamp ready to make an impact in the game, with Gerhard Mostert and Jean Deysel completing the forwards on the bench. Francois Hougaard, Morne Steyn and Gio Aplon are covering the backs for this game.

The team: 15. Frans Steyn, 14. JP Pietersen, 13. Jacque Fourie, 12. Jean de Villiers, 11. Bryan Habana, 10. Butch James, 9. Fourie du Preez, 8. Pierre Spies, 7. Danie Rossouw, 6. Heinrich Brüssow, 5. Victor Matfield, 4. Bakkies Botha, 3. Jannie du Plessis, 2. John Smit (Capt), 1. Beast Mtawarira.

Reserves: 16. Bismarck du Plessis, 17. Guthro Steenkamp, 18. Gerhard Mostert, 19. Jean Deysel, 20. Francois Hougaard, 21. Morne Steyn, 22. Gio Aplon.

Vermaak is 26 already and Pretorius is 27, not exactly youngsters, but they can fill the gap. Good luck to the next coach, no names jumping out at me from the domestic scene.

    Quality bench too.

Wallabies have also named probably there strongest team too. Higginbotham has been brilliant this season so they have an awesome loose trio. The only option is for the Boks to smash them in the tight 5 and put them on the backfoot!

If we have Bismarck, Wolla and Brussouw on the field at the same time, Pocock or not, the Aussies won’t be seeing any ball…

  • @wpw (Comment 69) : Okay here’s my long and subject to criticism view of tomorrow’s game
The problem with WP u21 is that they understand their roles so well, so the guys I want to perceive as weak links really aren’t.
With Kitshoff promoted, life is easier in the frontrow. Second row, those WP guys Roux and Hugo are outstanding – the standard setters at this level as far as I’m concerned in set and loose. But WP don’t really have a 3rd lineout option, so hopefully we can put more pressure on them at lineout time.
Backrow, I always want to write off Rubin Johannes but he’s been so good on the ground this season so far, so hopefully Kleinhans can outplay him here. Stander and Tera have the ability to be stand outs but they need to up their workrate to max. Carr and Lehmann are technically sound.
Another area where we can win is at halfback. Reinach is a livewire. Schreuder is a level-headed by the book player that is more likely to make one yawn than sit on the edge of your seat.
I’m hoping we can exert all kinds of pressure on William van Wyk offensively and defensively. He’s a good running flyhalf, lets see how he handles the other aspects of the game esp tackling.
Our centres simply have to bring it. They are highly rated. I love Heimar but he really needs to shine against the in-form Michael vd Spuy who is such an exciting player to watch. Nell is other one of the guys who gets the job done. He’s no Johann Sadie but been very effective so far. This would be a good stage for Piet Lindeque to start showing a bit of star quality but I suspect we’ll see an even contest with Nell possibly coming out on top.
On the wings there is a serious mismatch until Sbura arrived back. The Province boys are brill esp Tshotse Mbovane who really should be playing at a higher level – he steps off both feet and just understands what space on the field is all about: use it or create it. Tythan is really quick. Sometimes guys like Sithole find it harder to shine at the lower level. He can probably expect l

  • @beet (Comment 72) : less ball and slower ball to come his way. It will be hard for him to impress in our u21 setup even tho we know he’s a good player.
Our fullback has been a star. Prinsloo just has to make sure he’s able to link well with support players imo. Heinrich Steyl is a joy to watch as well – good speed and footwork.
If the WP team click very few things will stop them from getting 40 points tomorrow I think but all good things have to come to an end. We go there, Reinach plays like he did in the Vodacom Cup playoff, we tackle for all we’re worth and come out with a hard fought narrow win.

Mvovo isnt ready yet and had a rather average away tour recently.

Hougaard is there to cover 9. He is not an experienced winger.

I really don’t get the criticism levelled at Habana. He hasnt been as good as in previous years but his work rate is very good and he has improved since last year.

Amazing how people want to exclude him and yet our esteemed captain has been playing even worse and yet… no outcry??

  • Funny as hell. A friend I went to school with has a rugby blog and newsletter. He is also good mates with Smit, and has been pushing his theory that Frans Steyn should be our fullback because of the hang time he gets on his kicks. So my friend asks Smitty if he has been able to talk to Frans Steyn about the “hang time theory”. The response from our beloved National Captain: “Bud, the guy’s got the attention span of a goldfish!”

  • @robdylan (Comment 149) : Rob, DirecTV is carrying all the southern hemisphere matches, SupeRugby, Tri-Nations, NPC, and Currie Cup. They have dedicated two channels to rugby here in the US, which is great. Problem is I don’t have DirecTV, my house has a lot of trees around it, in fact, if you look at the house on Google Sattelite images, you can’t even see the house for all the trees. I can not get a good DirecTV signal, so I have to stick with cable television here. The good news is that VIPStand seems to have every rugby match televised in the world available on multiple live streaming feeds, very cool! The only problem I have been having with Currie Cup is those matches carried only with live streaming by DishTV. Those matches are not available anywhere else as far as I can tell. Problem is DishTV requires an activated account with them to view the live stream, sucks because DishTV is not really available here.
