Round 4 of the Currie Cup has come to an end and it’s time to have a look at how the various team managers are faring in the Fantasy League over on www.justrugby.net.

A strong round from Te Maklik has him taking the lead from last week’s leader WP XV, who slips to second spot, less than 40 points behind. Te Maklik managed the MVP bonus points after a difficult round of results where I do not think any one person got a full Starting Team Bonus. The battle between second and third is a close one, with only half a point separating WP XV and Red Zibearians. Hansa moves up a spot into third, overtaking Maak Die Bulle Almal Bokke, who was an early pace setter.

A couple of unsuspected players top the top scorers for the round, with Griquas’ kicking ace Rudi Vogt scoring a massive 27 points. Another Griquas player, Jonathan Mokuena came in second with 24.5 points, and yet another Griquas player, this time hooker Ryno Barnes, keeping his scoring up by finishing third on 22 points. The top five is rounded up by some usual suspects, flyhalves Elton Jantjies and Sias Ebersohn each adding 21 points for their managers.

French ace Fred Michalak (86) remains in top spot as the top five scorers for the season so far are predictably all halfbacks. He has a healthy 17 point lead over Jano Vermaak (69), who will turn out for the Bulls this weekend and will be hoping to bring some of those points to a battling Bulls outfit. Discarded Lions flyhalf Burton Francis (67) is in third spot, but will soon be overtaken as he plays second fiddle to Elton Jantjies. Western Province rookie Demetri Catrakilis (66) continues his mercurial rise to fame and is joint fourth spot with Sias Ebersohn (66).

A few players have returned or will return to action and managers will be happy to finally get some return out of these players. Rob Ebersohn and Elton Jantjies had their first outings last weekend while Jaco Taute starts for the Lions after his injury disrupted his start to the season. A few seasoned players have been dropped from their teams, including Francois Brummer, Tewis de Bruyn and Meyer Bosman. A few injuries have also ruled out players like Gerhard van den Heever, Hennie Daniller, Waylon Murray (who is out for the entire season) and Andries Strauss. With the Springbok squad announcement a few weeks off, making any major changes to your team now could be suicide as players get chopped and changed after every weekend.

  • Practically half my team is out injured. Do I use trades or wait for them to come back?

  • Does anyone else think that Burton should be starting ahead of Jantjies?
