Sharks under 19 coach Ryan Strudwick has named a completely unchanged 23 for tomorrow afternoon’s match against the Leoaprds, wihch kicks off at Mr Price Kings Park at 3pm.

After somewhat of a topsy-turvy start to the campaign, which has seen key backline players like Paul Jordaan and Fred Zeilinga lost to the under 21s, while others such as flyhalf Gavin Hauptfleisch have been ruled out injured, Strudwick appears to have found the right combination at last. Teenage flyhalf Rob du Preez – son of Natal scrumhalf Robert – will again play a crucial role against the Leopards, with another promising schoolboy, Maritzburg College scrumhalf Stefan Ungerer, sure to provide a spark coming off the bench later on.

The side played to a credible 9-all draw against Western Province in atrocious conditions at Newlands last week, after having numerous opportunities to win the game against their table-topping opponents. Inside centre Ruan Allerston – known as “Zorba” to his friends – will hope for more favourable goal-kicking conditions back in Durban this week.

Should the Sharks prevail against the Leopards, they would move into the top four on the competition log with the second round of matches fast approaching.

Captain Allan Dell highlighted the team’s better play as a unit, rather than as individuals, as a key factor in the better result against Province and points out that continuing to gel as a team is a real priority for the Sharks under 19s this week. “There’s no ‘I’ in ‘team’”. he reminds us, “but there are two in ‘idiot’”. Wise words indeed!

  • I think our guys will do extremely well to win this game. The Leopards will be a handful up front.

I’m surprised that Andrew Holland’s place kicking have never been put to the test. He’s a good striker of the ball.

  • @hmmm i have my doubts about the ep kings academy. The bulls spend millions in their set up.So far we have managed to attract the joshua standers and andile jhos of this world. One can see that not alot of young talented ep players want to play for the kings.Players are heading north these days.

  • @Muzi (Comment 12) : Ja but an Academy there is still better than no Academy at all + ZRA must have been offered some kind of pref treatment by the Kings to persuade them to move to an generally economically depressed region.

  • Well there is one tight game on the go between to very evenly matched sides.

Still 22-18 to the Leopards in the 21 st min but playing with good continuity in this second half.
