In a continuing series of articles where we’ll highlight the achievement, both big and small, coming up for our Sharks lads in the Currie Cup, let’s see what this evening’s encounter against the Leopards holds in terms of individual milestones.
There’s not a huge amount to get excited about this week, I fear, with Eugene van Staden’s 20th Currie Cup cap for the Sharks (assuming he makes it onto the park) probably the most significant. Coming into the Currie Cup team as an unknown last year, having played for Montpellier for a few years after leaving Griquas, van Staden (or “Gena” to his mates) quickly established himself as a vital cog in the side and went on to play in 15 matches out of a possible 16. Another guy who first appeared last year, lock Anton Bresler, will win his 10th Currie Cup cap for the Sharks tonight. Bres – aka “Joe Dirt”, which may have something to do with the trademark mullet – won four caps off the bench last year, to go with the five he has earned as a starter so far in 2011.
Joining the “five-cap club” this week are both centres, Meyer Bosman and Marius Joubert, earning their fifth Currie Cup caps for the Sharks (although both, obviously, have accumulated many more for other teams along the way). Neither player has yet to score a Currie Cup try for the Sharks, so that would be a nice fillip should it occur for either, or both, of them tonight. Also coming up for lucky number five is a young man with a big future, Sbura “Hosepipe” Sithole.
I’m sad to say that we missed a few things last week, among them Adi Jacobs’ birthday, which was on Sunday 14 August. Adi turned 31 on Sunday and we’d like to belatedly wish him all the best for the year ahead – and also belatedly congratulate Conrad Hoffmann on making his Currie Cup début for the Sharks against Western Province.

And I achieved 2 Milestones this week.
1. I have now reached the age of 28
2. I have reached the rank of Vodacom Cup Player
Have a nice day…
