The Springboks have their last opportunity to get some idea of who their strongest starting fifteen is as they face New Zealand in Port Elizabeth, in the final Tri Nations game for the Boks. The All Blacks still have one last game against Australia in Australia next week before they have only two weeks off before they kick off against Tonga in the opening World Cup game.

Springbok coach Peter de Villiers has made a few changes from the team that lost to Australia in Durban last weekend, with the mercurial Pat Lambie replacing Frans Steyn after the long haired, big booted player injured himself against the Wallabies. Morné Steyn replaces Butch James in the pivotal flyhalf position as the chopping and changing in the half backs continue.

In the forwards, there are a few changes as Willem Alberts makes his long awaited return from injury, replacing Danie Rossouw, and then a few changes in the front row with Bismarck du Plessis replacing John Smit and Gurthrö Steenkamp coming in for an in-form Beast Mtawarira.

On the side of the All Blacks, it is almost a brand new team if compared to the team we faced in New Zealand a few weeks ago, with seven of their top players left in New Zealand to be at full fitness once the World Cup kicks off. This does give them the ideal opportunity to figure out who will be the backups that will contribute from the bench and in the games against the minnows, as well as bringing a few players back from long term injuries, like Israel Dagg and Isaia Toeava.

This match should be as exciting as the game against Australia last week, with the A team Springboks now having had some game time and important combinations hopefully clicking into gear in time for this game and then to kick on into the World Cup.

South Africa: 15 Pat Lambie, 14 JP Pietersen, 13 Jaque Fourie, 12 Jean de Villiers, 11 Bryan Habana, 10 Morné Steyn, 9 Fourie du Preez, 8 Pierre Spies, 7 Willem Alberts, 6 Heinrich Brüssow, 5 Victor Matfield (captain), 4 Bakkies Botha, 3 Jannie du Plessis, 2 Bismarck du Plessis, 1 Gurthrö Steenkamp.

Replacements: 16 John Smit, 17 Tendai Mtawarira, 18 CJ van der Linde, 19 Danie Rossouw, 20 Ashley Johnson, 21 François Hougaard, 22 Butch James.

New Zealand: 15 Israel Dagg, 14 Isaia Toeava, 13 Richard Kahui, 12 Sonny Bill Williams, 11 Hosea Gear, 10 Colin Slade, 9 Jimmy Cowan, 8 Liam Messam, 7 Adam Thomson, 6 Jerome Kaino, 5 Ali Williams, 4 Samuel Whitelock, 3 John Afoa, 2 Keven Mealamu (captain), 1 Tony Woodcock.

Replacements: 16 Andrew Hore, 17 Ben Franks, 18 Jarrad Hoeata, 19 Victor Vito, 20 Andy Ellis, 21 Piri Weepu, 22 Cory Jane.

Date: Saturday, August 20
Venue: Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, Port Elizabeth
Kick-off: 17.00 (15.00 GMT)
Expected weather conditions: Clear day of sunshine with a high of 20°C, dropping to 10°C
Referee: George Clancy (Ireland)
Assistant referees: Andrew Small (England), Carlo Damasco (Italy)
TMO: Johann Meuwesen (South Africa)

Dagg has a massive run from inside his own half. Cowan falls over the line. Clancy asks if a try has been scored.

  • @Mutley (Comment 112) : Brussouw was huge, Willem Alberts was as understated and effective as Juan Smith in his play. Sublime stuff. The obvious replacement for Juan.

I didn’t think Alberts was as good as he usually is for the Sharks. Probably due to the Boks’ different game plan

Quite a revealing Test in many ways – lots of insights going forward.

Good luck with Wales, Fiji, and Samoa. ;-)

  • 33 missed tackles…!!
But when mentioning tackles made, how important was habana’s cover-tackle on cowen in the first minutes of the game?

  • And now the wait till the announcement of the 30-player squad to go over to nz and represent south africa in the wc..
Keep the 22 players that did duty yesterday (incl lambie_ any news on his injury?) And then add 8 more?
Schalk burger must go,so that is 23.
    Extra hooker? Chilli or strauus?
Mostert and deysel?that will make it 26.
    Mvovo?then it is 27.

  • @bergshark (Comment 121) : If we count all those players it is 27. Add JdJ and Aplon they will go so will Frans Steyn. Think there is your 30 players. Unless Lambie injury is serious then probably Ruan will go.

Damn felt for Lambie picking up a injury so soon after the start.
