The nation awaits

The South African squad to compete at the 2011 IRB Rugby World Cup will be announced in Johannesburg at 19h30 this evening and after a good win over the All Blacks this weekend, the nation has good reason to be upbeat about their prospects in the showcase tournament. The Boks, winners of the trophy in France in 2007, are aiming to be the only side in history ever to successfully defend their World Cup crown.

South African World Cup squads over the years have tended to be marked with some controversy and unexpected selections, be it the surprise inclusion of unknown Robbie Brink at the expense of Tiaan Strauss back in 1995, or the shock axing of captain Gary Teichmann for the 1999 tournament. 2003′s squad included some frankly ridiculous selections, with the likes of Jorrie Muller, Dale Santon and Christo Bezuidenhout hardly “World Cup calibre” players. Jake White’s squad for 2007 was probably the most predictable and least controversial one yet-picked, although the late withdrawal of Pierre Spies, to be replaced by Bismarck du Plessis on the eve of the tournament, did add a little spice.

Most pundits are expecting few shocks this time around and with no fewer than 17 names from the 2007 squad likely to make the cut again in 2011, the benefit of continuity and experience should favour the South Africans. The vast majority of players added since 2007 have established themselves as test regulars in the intervening four years and few could argue that the likes of Beast Mtawarira, Heinrich Brussow, Spies, Morne Steyn, Francois Hougaard and Juan de Jongh will do anything other than strengthen an already good side.

In fact, about the only thing the Boks are unlikely to have in abundance in this year’s squad is young players, with the Sharks’ Patrick Lambie expected to be the only man in the whole group yet to turn 21. Experience is a boon, as is the wisdom of age, but one feels that the exuberance of youth can also be a real asset at times too and there’s a small part of me that would love to see the Boks take a flyer on really left-field selection, such as picking a Marcell Coetzee or Siya Kolisi out of nowhere to fill the hotly-debated extra loose forward berth.

As for the squad itself, well, the vast majority of it really picks itself, with just a few positions still uncertain. As mentioned, the selectors will need to choose between Jean Deysel and Ashley Johnson for a single loose forward slot, although others, such as Ryan Kankowski, Deon Stegmann and Francois Louw have an outsiode chance of usurping both. With Danie Rossouw providing adequate lock cover, there is room for only one other backup second rower and while Gerhard Mostert appears to be the man in possession, Johann Muller and maybe even Flip van der Merwe could also come into the picture. If included, Muller would be the 18th member of Jake White’s 2007 squad to earn repeat selection four years later.

The backs are largely settled and with the news that both Frans Steyn and Lambie are fit to travel, if picked, tends to shut the door on any outsiders. There’s a spot up for grabs as backup wing to the established pair of Bryan Habana and JP Pietersen, but few would put money on anyone other than Lwazi Mvovo grabbing that one. Ruan Pienaar’s ability to play in a number of positions should see him get one of the utility back berths, from where he will cover scrumhalf and flyhalf. His comfort in the latter position should put paid to Elton Jantjies’s selection hopes, while a former stalwarts in the form of Adi Jacobs and Wynand Olivier also look set to miss out, with Juan de Jongh likely to travel as the only specialist midfielder outside the starting pair of Jean de Villiers and Jaque Fourie.

Sharksworld’s likely RWC 2011 squad

Forwards(16): Beast Mtawarira, Gurthro Steenkamp, John Smit (capt), Bismarck du Plessis, Chilliboy Ralepelle, Jannie du Plessis, CJ van der Linde, Victor Matfield, Bakkies Botha, Danie Rossouw, Gerhard Mostert, Schalk Burger, Willem Alberts, Pierre Spies, Heinrich Brussow, Jean Deysel.

Backs(14): Fourie du Preez, Francois Hougaard, Ruan Pienaar, Morne Steyn, Butch James, Patrick Lambie, Jean de Villiers, Jaque Fourie, Juan de Jongh, Bryan Habana, JP Pietersen, Lwazi Mvovo, Francois Steyn, Gio Aplon

  • My biggest worry in this squad is the lack of another specialist tighthead. I would have prefered BJ in the mix instead of CJ.

Neither CJ or Smit can really do the tighthead job proper IMO.

  • @robdylan (Comment 5) : GM Rob , dont get me wrong boet , in my eyes Deysel is a must , just dont see it happening as one must also take into account the political needs , AJ i have no doubt will go, and not that he is a bad choice, to Rossouw should not be chosen at flank end of story

Rob has the mix pretty much correct in the article , i differ only with his selection of Deysel and A Johnson, the latter is whom i think will be chosen

  • @beet (Comment 9) : Who knows, im not saying that he is my pick but the rumour mill is active. I reckon if it does happen its straight cover for Brussouw, Flouw carries well and isnt half bad on the deck, he may not make as many steals as Brussouw but he can slow the ball down effectively. Also rather him than Stegmann.

if anything |Deysel just as good at fetching or slowing down the ball as Flo , deysel however cleans out rucks and is stronger in ball carrying dept and defense

Flo however gives away far more penalties

I’ll agree on one thing ? he is better the Stegmann

I asked her on the weekends if Habana joined again , and she confirmed. I asked her the same question during Super Rugby, and she said last time he did an eyegym session in 2009.

  • The Durbanites had almost their entire first team training on Tuesday while Stefan Terblanche was given the day off due to the birth of his child.
Also present were Springbok World Cup hopefuls Jean Deysel, Lwazi Mvovo and Charl McLeod.
Plumtree confirming their availability for the weekend trip to the Highveld, a strong indication they will not be in Peter de Villiers’ 30-man squad to be named later on Tuesday.
The Sharks boss was happy to have them all on board, saying it will now make planning easier as they map out the rest of the season.
However, one area of concern is still the centre pairing of Meyer Bosman and Marius Joubert.
Both again looked below the pace against the Leopards, especially new recruit Joubert who arrived from French club Clermont Auvergne prior to the season…..”www.supersport.com”

Aplon also seemed a little unsure under the high ball against Australia. I would pick Steyntjie, Lambie, Ruan at fullback before I pick Aplon.

  • @Culling Song (Comment 63) :
Here is a link you may find interesting. Its written by a SAAF survivor of the airlifts.

    http://www.warsawuprising.com/witness/vaneyssen.htm

I saw the author of this piece at the Warsaw airport in ’88 when he arrived for one or other commemoration.
At the end of the piece he mentions an incredible chap named Kowalski, who I also met then. At that stage he was an elderly chap already but made it his duty to cycle to the monument he built to tend to it and water the flowers he had planted. He commuted by bicycle and in dry spells would take water along with him in cans. The memorials he built were personal and not funded by the government, who at times had damaged / destroyed the monument (them being communist and the memorial being to SA airmen) Nothing detered Mr Kowalski and he would repair the damage and carry on with his mission of remembering people that tried to help him.

While in his ( Kowalski’s) house I saw a newspaper article, It was the Star or Rand Daily Mail and it had a picture of Kowalski in Johannesburg receiving the freedom of the city.

Mr Kowalski gave me a piece of molten metal mixed with sand and then solidified. It is from the crashed Liberator aircraft.

“its the sympbol of one of the regiments that took part in the Warsaw uprising that started in August 1944.” AK is not a regiment it’s an army (albeit underground).

  • @rekinek (Comment 74) : I understood it to be the AK (home army) that took part in the uprising. I did not know how to explain this to CS so Googled and according to that there were different divisions (which I called a regiment(s)) that made up the AK of which one had the PW symbol.
Forgive me for distorting your history.

It gives a bit of a story how the sign developed.

OK, so then are the AK, the AK Wawer and the Polish Secret State all the same thing with different names or different things (organisations) with the same symbol.
    Im getting confused here.

Understanding the selected Bok team will be esaier.

  • I hate it when any sound things are going wrong… Sound engineering is an hobby of mine and it gets on my nerves if professional personal don’t get it right…. And when someone sings like that and spoils the atmosphere of a awesome night in young men lives… Never again..

  • @Salmonoid (Comment 80) : Wawer was like a subdivision of AK (dunno the proper military terms – hence AK Wawer – they were responsible for sabotaging etc.) and AK was underground / secret army of the secret state ;-) . There was t ;-) e government in exile.

BTW – liked ther story of Mr Kowalski.

  • @klempie (Comment 171) : Not a bad publicity stunt if he wanted to draw attention to himself. Just Jinger are almost forgotten. By tomorrow everyone will know his name and his musical credentials.
