Derick Kuün has retired from professional rugby. The player made the announcement on Wednesday and will not play any further professional rugby, with immediate effect.
The Bulls player has cited business reasons for his decision and will focus on his family business in the Balfour area.
Kuün has won three Super Rugby Gold medals with the Bulls, as well as winning a Currie Cup and a Vodacom Cup trophy along the way.
We would like to wish the player all the best for the future, and thank you for all the debate that you have stirred on this site.

Hey Richard a little off topic. That JP du Plessis guy you think won’t amount to anything has replaced Ryan Nell as the starting centre for the WP U-21 team this week.
Might pay to keep an eye on him
@hendrikp (Comment 1) : It’s the Falcons so it’s not like Ryan Nell has been dropped, just rotated to give JP a chance.
Still it will be good to see him play.
I won’t be missing the guy, not a fan of his at all.
@KSA Shark © (Comment 3) : Well at least he’s bowing out for reasons other than failing a drug test, which was my initial suspicion before I read the article.
@hendrikp (Comment 1) :
Careful.. I never said he won’t amount to anything. I’m just questioning the fact that there is this hype about the kid, and will save the Sharks from all their centre troubles.
For the record, I hope the kid proves me wrong and is this brilliant individual. But until he proves himself, I reckon we should stay away from hailing him the next best thing..
@beet (Comment 2) :
Fair enough. But it still brings him into the team. And you can’t exactly disagree with him at the very least having been capped at Super Rugby level.
Can become first choice from here. Watch this space.
Was Kuun ever a Springbok?
@Richard Ferguson (Comment 5) :
Fair enough
He is competing at the same level as Lindeque now though, just so we’re clear
@hendrikp (Comment 8) :
Was he ever capped at Super Rugby?
@rekinek (Comment 7) :
Nope not a Springbok. Worst thing they ever did was move him to hooker… and then move him back. Screwed him over big time.
@Richard Ferguson (Comment 9) :
Yup played for the Rebels against the Hurricanes.
How long he was on the field isn’t up for discussion though.
@rekinek (Comment 7) : @hendrikp (Comment 10) :
Interesting website resource that lists players Bok caps: http://www.supersport.com/rugby/superspringbok
@VinChainSaw (Comment 12) :
@beet (Comment 4) : He announced this retirement in the S15 already, but has just brought it forward a few months.
In sharksworld, Derick Kuun will be remember as the guy that made the crucial turnover.
@VinChainSaw (Comment 12) : even better is http://www.genslin.us/bokke/sarugby.html
@VinChainSaw (Comment 12) : Or you can use the source website.
http://www.sarugby.net/ At the bottom of the homepage you can enter the name you want info on.
@fyndraai (Comment 15) : turnover? Hardly a turnover…
@robdylan (Comment 16) : not so good for finding OTHER info outside the bok frame on the players though but awesome for team info etc.
@fyndraai (Comment 15) : I didn’t know it was him.
@hendrikp (Comment 6) : I’m actually really excited about the news. I can’t wait to see him play and if he does pan out its so much better that he’s in SA than becoming the next Vickerman or Rathbone over in Aus.
@KSA Shark © (Comment 20) : It was Wikus van heerden wasnt it?
He will be remembered for one thing,and one thing only………………………….the nut shot on bis
@KSA Shark © (Comment 20) :
At the infamous ruck the ball popped out on the Sharks side, 2 Sharks players fell over the ball but he managed to put his hands on it and a while later it emerged on the Bulls side.
Rob is correct. Not really a turn-over. More like: Secured possession after it was almost lost.
@Honey Badger (Comment 23) : THAT I will remember him for.
Ah man! Now I will have to find another rugby player to absolutely loathe!
Anyone seen Jaco vd Westhuizen lately?
Oh well; its not tragic… Its not newsworthy, but yes it needs to be reported I guess…
@Big Fish (Comment 26) : Stegmann is keen to make the step up.
@KSA Shark © (Comment 28) :
I can’t despise him: he looks like he has a special parking outside Loftus.
d
uane Vermeulen
@beet (Comment 30) :
Molly aint gonna like you. She has a thing for guys named Duane.
@Big Fish (Comment 31) :
Hahahaha!!
Wazzzzup mense?
@robdylan (Comment 33) :
Hey dude.. What’s up?
@KSA Shark © (Comment 28) : @Big Fish (Comment 29) : I reckon I’m willing to bite the bullet on this one and loathe Slegmann, although Wacko vd Westhuizen would definitely leapfrog him in the pecking order if he were to set foot on a rugby field again. I could also probably pour some scorn on Timotei Olivier and her lovely feathered bangs.
@Culling Song (Comment 35) :
I have the self same hatred for Gary Botha..
Hatred corrupts the soul guys
@robdylan (Comment 37) : I don’t hate any of the people I mentioned….. But I really, really, really, really dislike the personae they project. Happy?
@Culling Song (Comment 35) : what about Jaco Pretorius – after about six years from now, we should see him in a Sharks jersey – just needs to age up to be able to battle it out… Seriously that oke does nothing on a rugby field…
@robdylan (Comment 37) :
Dislike then..
@DarkDestroyer (Comment 39) : Jaco Pretorius is as useful as a wooden tit on an expectant mother, if you’ll pardon the extreme political incorrectness.
For a laugh as good as that you are unconditonally pardonned…
Nope I don’t hate any players but I do have a STRONG dislaike for some.
Currently Stegmann and Kuun are my “favourites”
And after thinking about it I can’t really think of any others i dislike as intensely.
Yeeeeeeees I know Victoria exists, but that is not a dislike of her, it is a dislike of her leadership and people management skills.
I have derick in my fantasy tea$ and have 0 trades
well no prizes for which rugby player I do not like much…..tip….it is not Luke Watson….
Lmao @ Culling Song
Now the Bulls can start winning again
Cheers Derrick, jy was my favourite
no comment for fear on contravening this website’s rules.
@Pokkel (Comment 49) :
Love him or hate him, he still has 3 medals that most rugby players would dearly love to have.
Swopping the bright lights of Tshwane for Balfour is another positive for him.
