U21′s in battle for top spot

The Sharks U21, after their annihilation of the Leopards last weekend, will look to take some much needed momentum into their clash with the Lions U21, who are ahead of them on the log by a single point.

There are two changes in the backline as Nico van der Westhuizen replaces Kieran Goss, who had a rather horrid first half last week, but is understandable after being hampered with an injury and Fred Zeilinga replaces Paul Jordaan at pivot.

Shaun Malton takes over the captaincy from Monde Hadebe in line with the continuing rotation at hooker. The loose trio of Mtembu, Jafta and Kleinhans is something to look forward to as these players are all coming into their own. Also watch out for the next generation locks in Peet Marais and Pieter-Steph du Toit.

The Sharks U21:

15. Gouws Prinsloo, 14. Jaco van Tonder, 13. Piet Lindeque, 12. Heimar Williams, 11. Nico van der Westhuizen, 10. Fred Zeilinga, 9. Cobus Reinach, 8. Lubabalo Mtembu, 7. Siseko Jafta, 6. Francois Kleinhans, 5. Peet Marais, 4. Pieter-Steph du Toit, 3. Nick Schonert, 2. Shaun Malton (Capt), 1. Danie Mienie.

Reserves: 16. Monde Hadebe, 17. Njabulo Mkize, 18. Karolis Navickas, 19. Brynard Stander, 20. Chris Cloete, 21. Paul Jordaan, 22. Kieran Goss.

  • Sorry Rich, but even if you guys klap the third placed Lions with a 4 try bonus you won’t be able to overtake the unbeaten WP u21′s.

  • Good luck boys.

I get a feeling this is going to be a titanic battle against probably the most unpredictable team in the compo.

Great to see Peet Marais back in the starting lineup. His presence is huge.

Vodacom cup flyhalf Hein Cronje starts at 10.

  • A bit of trivia!

Jafta, Kleinhans, Schonert, Malton, Hadebe & Stander in the Sharks side and de Bruyn and Combrinck from the Lions were all teammates in the 2008 KZN Craven Week side along with Pat Lambie.

Lambie and Malton made the SA Schools side and de Bruyn and Hadebe were chosen for a “South” team comprising players from Kzn, OFS, WP, SWD, EP etc that was supposed to play against a “North” team after Craven Week. The game didnt take place and SA Schools were thumped by a team chosen from the Academy week.

  • @beet (Comment 15) : I think that many of them are understated or out of date! Hein Cronje could easily be 100 or close to!

The other 19 year old lock Ruan Venter was injured at the U20 WC earlier this year would probably have pushed for a place in the U21 side. Kene Okafor is also out – not sure how long – which is why Botha has been playing.
The u19′s recruited Venter, Botha and the massive paul Willemse this year so the u21′s in 2012 should be interesting

  • @steve (Comment 16) : Speartackle (Andre T from the other site) said Paul Willemse had trimmed down a bit from the 135kg he was carrying last year at school and was looking in good form but that was before the season started.

Are you able to shed light on why Combrink threw in the towel at WP?

  • @beet (Comment 17) : i believe a bit of a fall out with key people.
He was doing well – started regularly for the U19′s in 2009, played Vodacom Cup, and for the SA U20′s in the warm up games, in 2010 then apparently got injured and fell out of the picture. he played for maties in the Varsity cup in 2010 & 11.

He is quite a strong willed youngster so I guess he may have p***ed off the wrong people.

Our u19 frontrow are good but our locks need to be at their absolute best if we are to maintain a strong tight 5 challenge.

  • @bergshark (Comment 24) : I think that he did initially sign with the Lions – I’m pretty sure that he attended their pre season camp that they hold late in their u18 year in JHB.
Mjekevu has been playing well at centre – that is where he was picked for SA Schools in 2008 and where he initially played at U19 for the Lions. He went to wing to accomodate Divan Ferguson at 13, another player with loads of potential who seems to spend the bulk of every season injured, and he was then picked at wing for super14.
