Still no Vermeulen for Province

Western Province’s Currie Cup captain-elect, loose forward Duane Vermeulen, will be out of action for approximately three weeks more, after a knee injury sustained in the Super Rugby competition has taken longer than anticipated to heal.

Vermeulen, whom Province coach Alister Coetzee has named as squad captain despite his injury, was initially expected to be out of action for the first 8 weeks of the campaign, necessitating the rotation of the captain’s armband between hookers Tiaan Liebenberg and Deon Fourie. Apparently, though, the knee has “not quite settled” after an operation in mid-year and powerful number 8 will now be expected to return in time for the 12th round of the competition.

Another loose forward, flank Pieter Louw, will be out for a similar period after fracturing a rib against the Lions a fortnight ago.

Western Province start their second round of matches with a tough away fixture against Griquas, in Kimberley. In the first round, the teams played to a draw at Newlands, although Griquas argulably had the better of the play.

  • Remember WP have nothing to lose. We have a team filled with young players so let’s see how far we can go in the tournament. :???:

  • WP are missing Vermeulen. Despite all the neigh-sayers, he is a real work-horse who doesn’t mind working his ass off despite being saddled with all the donkey work.

    Never one to change tack, one can’t judge him too harshly as an unexciting player until one has walked a mule in his shoes – WP have too often had flashy forwards, and he at least is a blood and guts type.

    @wpw (Comment 6) :
    Quite right – you do have nothing to lose, having won nothing last year. The Sharks on the other hand, do have something to lose.

  • In the first round, the teams played to a draw at Newlands, although Griquas arguably had the better of the play.

    Hey? We had 62.7% of the ball, the Griquas two tries were WELL against the run of play and we gained almost 3 times more the amount of metres than the Griquas. Nevermind the 2 missed penalties from van Aswegen. We gave them the draw, we handled the ball alot more, were asked to make less tackles, made more turnovers, I mean the Griquas even missed 39 tackles in the game.

  • WeePee did excellent in the first half of the CC season. Despite 7 to 8 U21 & U19s our youth teams also top the log. Gatslag about Whitehead but want to see JP du Plessis get a run. The x Paul Roos who had an Aussie stunt in League and at the Rebels is back in town and will be excellent to replace Sadie who will be a bul next season.

    Jan, JP du Plessis is clearly not up to it :lol: . He didn’t cut it with the Rebels who finished dead last in Super Rugby. Then they cut him. Just ask Richard Ferguson.

    No but really I’m looking forward to seeing what he does. Obviously living in New Zealand can only see his performances for senior side, but hopefully by next season he’ll be playing CC rugby at the very least. To find a good centre in SA you need to go to WP.

  • @molly (Comment 32) : Molly. Everyone is rating him based on his schoolboy form right now. We need someone to get their arse down to Newlands and watch the next u21 game and then tell us that he’s as good now as he was then.

  • @Clayton(PJLD) (Comment 30) :

    He is back with WP yes. Reason? The Rebels have signed Kurtley Beale and James O’Connor. Also JP du Plessis said that he is not interested in playing for Australia, so he’d be taking up their ‘one overseas player’ spot if they kept him on.

    @molly (Comment 32) :

    True. Would’ve been nice to see his actual performance. They’ve got a match-up with the Sharks U-21s in a few weeks, and hearing what the U-21 coaches are saying they are comparing him to Sadie so should be interesting to see what happens.

    If you can make a mental note to watch the Leopards no.12 Adriaan Engelbrecht (I think that’s his name) and report back, I’d be grateful. He proved to be unbelievable strong on his feet vs the Sharks.
