Young prop Coenie “Shrek” Oosthuizen has signed an extension to his contract with the Free State Cheetahs that will see ihm stay in Bloemfontein until the end of the 2012 season, according to his agent Gerrie Swart.

The 22-year-old Oosthuizen, an old-boy of Grey College like so many of his Cheetahs teammates, burst onto the scene during last year’s Currie Cup campaign as a strong ball carrying loosehead, in the mould of former Free State number ones like Ollie le Roux and his mentor Os du Randt. While picked to tour with the Springboks late last year, he has yet to earn a test cap and showed that he still has much to learn when it comes to the technical aspects of front row play in this year’s Super Rugby tournament; he was regularly penalised for illegal scrummaging and breakdown offences, although his work rate on defence and with ball in hand remained exemplary.

Du Randt, who is currently the Cheetahs scrum coach, is in the process of converting Oosthuizen into a tighthead option, in order to increase the player’s versatility and it’s in the number 3 jersey that the 127kg juggernaut will run out this weekend when the Cheetahs take on the Leopards.

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 1) : funny that he;s only committed for 1 more year… a lot of the Cheetahs boys seem to like keeping their options open.

Perhaps Shrek hasn’t had quite as many offers from elsewhere as he was hoping to get…

  • @robdylan (Comment 5) : :) Other coaches are aware of his weak point. (giving away penalties at scrum time)

Quite ironic that if you consider that his strong point is supposed to be his scrumming.

  • Interesting that he will be swopping sides in the front row..

Very keen to see him go, he might get his penalty count down a bit on the tighthead side..

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 6) : Marcel vd Merwe is an up and coming young player who is still u21. A big prop who looks like a powerlifter. He’s put in some good performances and has caught the eye this season. He caused a bit of a stir a few years back when he left his W/Cape school to complete his matric at Grey College Bloem – Megatron has a horrible word for this.
