In a year that seems to have been wall-to-wall rugby, New Zealand this weekend witnesses the Finale of the domestic inter-provincial competition with two finals. Hamilton, will host the country’s show piece fixture when last year’s finalist again go head to head for the 2011 ITM Cup Premiership title. Waikato finished top qualifier after 13 rounds of round robin play and therefore are afforded the right to play host to perennial finalist’s Canterbury. On Sunday down the road in bucket-head land, Manawatu will host Hawkes Bay in the Championship final, with the victors enjoying the spoils of top-tier ITM Cup Premiership rugby in 2012.

Week 13 Review

The weekend’s action saw all of the finalists limber up for this weekends final hurrah with tough matches. Canterbury and Waikato were impressive in their Premiership warm-up fixtures, while Manawatu and Hawke’s Bay found the going a little tougher. Taranaki repelled their first and last challenge of the season and have therefore found a summer resting place for the ‘Log o’ Wood’ for the summer holidays.

Final Match Previews – Week 14

Game 71 Waikato v Canterbury Prediction: Waikato by 10-15 points

In a repeat of last year’s final, Waikato will go into this year’s climax with plenty to prove. So often are Waikato sides labelled nearly men, but this year they may just have that extra edge of motivation to go one better. Un-wanted All Blacks in Liam Messam and Stephen Donald will have plenty to prove and were influential last week in their impressive win over Auckland. Canterbury will be void of current All Blacks but still will boast abundant talent that will be keen to stake a final claim for Superugby contracts in 2012.

Verdict: 2011 Premiership Winner’s – Waikato

Game 72 Manawatu v Hawke’s Bay Prediction: Manawatu by 10-15 points

This could be a try-fest win undoubtedly the two most attacking sides in the Championship playing off for automatic promotion to the Premiership in 2012. If the structure/format of the competition does not change next season then the result of this match is a real pot of gold at the end of a short and congested ITM rugby season.

Verdict: 2011 Championship Winner’s – Manawatu

So that’s a rapt for another ITM Cup season – it has been short, congested and definitely wall to wall. I hope you have enjoyed our coverage here on Sharksworld – see you all next season. HH
