Lions coach John Mitchell has named his side to face Griquas in a round 9 Currie Cup encounter at Coca Cola Park. While two previous captains have returned to the starting lineup this week, it is the most recent, Josh Strauss, who will lead the side out.

Centre Doppies la Grange is also back, having missed out a good few rounds due to injury, but will have enough to worry about learning the somewhat unfamiliar position of outside centre without having to contend with the captaincy as well. La Grange replaces Lionel Mapoe in the number 13 jersey, with the latter dropping out of the match 22 entirely.

Strauss’s return to the number 8 jersey sees Warren Whiteley dropping to the bench, with Jaco Kriel dropping out of the 22 to make way for him. In a final change to the squad, Kiwi back James Kamana has been named in the number 22 jersey after being out with injury since midway through the Super Rugby competition.

Lions: 15 Jaco Taute, 14 Deon van Rensburg, 13 Doppies la Grange, 12 Alwyn Hollenbach, 11 Michael Killian, 10 Elton Jantjies, 9 Michael Bondesio, 8 Joshua Strauss (capt), 7 Derrick Minnie, 6 Cobus Grobbelaar, 5 Franco van der Merwe, 4 Wikus van Heerden, 3 Patric Cilliers, 2 Bandise Maku, 1 JC Janse van Rensburg

Substitutes: 16 Martin Bezuidenhout, 17 Jacobie Adriaanse, 18 Johan Snyman, 19 Michael Rhodes, 20 Warren Whitely, 21 Burton Francis, 22 James Kamana

  • How bad is Mapoe, will he need the Sharks medical team to get him up and playing again?

  • Timely return from Kamana ..it will be expecting to much from him after a lengthy injury but he is a perfect impact player to have.

There is no scrumhalf cover ..so I can only assume Doppies will cover if need be ..
