Griquas have named their team to face the Lions in Johannesburg in the Friday night fixture, and will see more backline shuffling after Riaan Viljoen has been left at home.

Viljoen’s wife is expecting to give birth on the weekend and he has opted to stay with her in her time of need, and has been replaced by Earl Rose in the all-important flyhalf role. Griquas will continue with Hanno Coetzee and Wilmaure Louw in the centres after both Jean Stemmet and Barry Geel have been ruled out with injury.

Two players who were expected not to take part in the game have been selected as starting fifteen players, Davon Raubenheimer having recovered from his ankle injury and lock Martin Muller recovering from a stomach muscle injury.

Griquas: 15 Rudi Vogt, 14 Rocco Jansen, 13 Wilmaure Louw, 12 Hanno Coetzee, 11 Dusty Noble, 10 Earl Rose, 9 Sarel Pretorius, 8 Jonathan Mokuena (captain), 7 Davon Raubenheimer, 6 Justin Downey, 5 Martin Muller, 4 Hendrik Roodt, 3 Lourens Adriaanse, 2 Ryno Barnes, 1 Ivann Espag.

Replacements: 16 Simon Westraadt, 17 Steph Roberts, 18 Frikkie Spies, 19 Leon Karemaker, 20 Marnus Schoeman, 21 Matthew Rosslee, 22 Monty Dumond.

  • Should say in the contract that you shouldn’t get your wife pregnant unless it’s in March.

  • Underated IMO – Riaan Viljoen probably the 2nd best fullback in the S15 this year – Only Dagg was better marginally :)

Dagg was out for the entire S15 man. Kurtley Beale was the form fullback. In SA I’d have given it to Jaco Taute, followed by Viljoen.

He must’ve mixed the 2 up if he was being serious and actually watched the games. He would’ve noticed Dagg didn’t play at all.

Must be a case of not being sure which player is which..

Mils was also good in the Super 15.. But I do agree, Taute was one of the best for the South African franchises..

Mils had one of his worst seasons I thought. Also spent some time off. Thought the really impressive NZ fullback was Ben Smith. Great player who would’ve been in had he been a Crusader. Unfortunately he is a Highlander… meaning selection to the All Blacks is unlikely.

  • @hendrikp (Comment 9) : Playing for the Crusaders in NZ is like playing for the Bulls in SA. Already one foot in for international selection if you’re a half decent player.
