Where will Frans go?

So our dear friend Frans Steyn is hinting that he does not like the French lifestyle, and would like to make a move back to sunny South Africa. The question on most people’s lips is where he will end up. Let’s take a closer look at what is out there already.

He has mentioned that his new favourite position is centre, where he plays for his club in France, but for the Springboks he is preferred at fullback, simply because we have a list of talented centres and it would be a shame to leave them out.

So if centre is where he wants to be selected, his options are rather limited in terms of South African Unions, with only really the Sharks battling with over the hill centres. There has been talk of getting Tim Whitehead in at the Sharks, and with the purchase of Riaan Viljoen adding dimension to the backline, it is rather difficult to see him finding a spot.

Looking at Western Province, where the centre talent cup is overflowing, there simply isn’t a chance that he will play with Jean de Villiers, Jaque Fourie and Juan de Jongh already fighting for two jerseys. Moving up a province, the Cheetahs might have a space for him as they have Robert Ebersohn but talk is that Corne Uys will be moving the Europe to replace Gcobani Bobo at Newcastle. So this is a maybe and will be right up his alley as he is a Free State boytjie after all.

The Lions started mentioning Frans’ name, but that was while they still had money, and with Alwyn Hollenbach, Doppies la Grange and Waylon Murray already there, it would be kinda pointless. The Bulls, according to one of our reliable sources, have about 20 centres that are ready to step up and play Super Rugby already. (I’m not sure where they all are if Zane Kirchner continues, but I digress).

Coming back to the Sharks then, will it be a wise buy, because he will literally cost an arm, a leg and a haircut, and I am not sure he is worth the effort, to be honest. In two years we will have a brilliant centre pairing of Paul Jordaan and Heimar Williams/Piet Lindeque, so I am happy to start giving those guys the game time from next year, rather than playing Meisiekind Version 2.0 in the Sharks backline.

  • well – can’t say I disagree with you, Rich… Cheetahs or Bulls, for my money, but I doubt the former can afford him.

  • Coming back because it has been difficult to slot back into the Bok structure after being away is quite key IMO. If he plans to slot back into the Boks it will have to be at 15, coz the 12, 13 slots are tightly locked up.

With that in mind, both the Bulls and the Stormers need decent Fullbacks. He will end up in CT IMO. He is to much of a prima donna to fit at the Bulls.

  • I disagree of course.
Yes Bosman had his first decent game in a sharks jersey this past saturday I admit that much.

The reality is, Frans Steyn will offer a lot more than anyone we currently have in our backline with the possible exception of brilliant Fred.

Get Whitehead by all means, he`s equally at home at 13 anyway so he won`t be wasted here.
Viljoen can slot in on the wing or fullback so he`ll get some gametime as well.

Remember Super Rugby tests your depth in every position. Yes there are some younger names being thrown about here but we`ve never seen them in action for the sharks. Plumtree sticks to the tried and tested, whether they`ve passed or not . . . we can`t change that, so lets rather use players who`ll give us a glimmer of hope.

Lets roll the dice with Frans Steyn. In terms of Super rugby log positions . . . we can only go up!

  • Francois Steyn is and will always be a valuable player in any side. Versatile, strong defender, and puts points on the board. He’s a genuine match-winner. Saying that, I think he should stick to fullback. His best option would be the Stormers. The Cheetahs could also use him but they wouldn’t be able to afford him. Don’t think he would fit in at the Bulls.

  • Woah! Nobody needs Fransie more than the Sharks! The possible signing of Whitehead, and the confirmed signing of a utility back like Viljoen doesn’t change that – he is far better than either.

Sharks should jettison the balies and pull in this proven takent. Please come back Fransie!

  • Fullback, Fullback, Fullback, Fullback. He needs to forget about where he enjoys playing, and realise what a valuable player he is at the back.

Never seen a fullback so comfortable under the high ball, or with such a big boot. He also put in 2 HUGE hits in that game against Australia. Joins the line really well. The tactic of trying a drop-goal if the opposition doesn’t put the ball into touch works brilliantly because even if he misses, you get the ball back from the 22m drop-out with all your players in position.

At 12 he is just another pair of hands who can run the ball a little.

  • @Original Pierre (Comment 9) : IF he is prepared to play center for his Province and risk being overlooked at the Boks then The Sharks will be stupid not to take him as a 12.

provided they don’t then get into a war of words with the Bok coach on where the guy should play. :)

I’d much rather play against him than have him in my team..

That’s just me being honest about my opinion.

He has done nothing with the Boks so far this season, and will be rendered useless at this World Cup.. Watch this space…

I’m watching but I can promise you that you’re very wrong. He barely played for the Boks so far this season, so of course he’s done nothing.

In the mean time he’s won the Springboks games through HUGE penalties and those 2 drop-goals (1 that no other player in the world could’ve gotten) against Australia.

I think someone is still bitter about that S14 final

I think it had more to do with the intense criticism he was getting playing in South Africa. Critics were all over him, wanting to bring him down to their level. The nr. 1 topic of discussion around the braai was Francois Steyn.

I’m not willing to throw aside possibly the most talented player available to the Springboks. Frans Steyn is a winner.

He’s got his short hair back now so hopefully most will get back to judging him by what he does on the field! Of course he still looks to have a slightly large behind… but I haven’t seen any proof that it’s affected his game. And I don’t know his body fat percentages etc. either. Just see a very, very, very talented player who can add value to any side

Lambie at fullback!!! Forget about the need and consider what’s best for him. The Sharks will get the best out of him if they keep him at 15. Would also like to see Conrad Hoffmann step up. Very talented. Time he proves himself to be better then McLeod.

Riaan Viljoen also on his way remember! Hope Paul Jordaan also gets a couple of oppurtunities, even if it’s just for 5 minutes off the bench to help him grow in confidence.

  • Can’t imagine Steyns personality being a problem. It’s probably just a rumour. Know a couple of guys here who went to school with him and I’ve never heard anything bad about the guy. They both just say he is really big. We’re quick to want to bring Steyn down a notch because he’s so confident. That doesn’t necessarily mean he’s anything but a very good well behaved person.

  • He’ll end up at the Bulls no doubt.

With Matfield, Botha, Fourie etc all leaving, there is likely to be large sums of spare capital lying around to throw at him.

Also, Meisiekind is getting on a bit so he’ll be a great signing for them.
He’ll also be one of the ‘manne’ if he goes there because of his experience which should suit his ego perfectly.

Australia flyhalf Quade Cooper says he is in New Zealand to win the Rugby World Cup – not to win new friends.

Always prefered Steyn at centre. Still think we should be looking for an outside centre with raw pace. Consider some of the great all black centers who started on the wing, umaga and nonu to name 2. Maybe we should be looking at bringing a player like pieterson closer to the action.

Best possible backline option for our Super 15. Plus we miss the Crusers, if we don`t make the play-offs with this backline, we never will.

  • @Ben (Comment 80) : Howzit Ben, hope all is well on your side. I am hoping that the workers are at the house right now working on the inside. We have the remnants of tropical storm Lee nailing us right now (tropical depression). It is stalled over us, so we are getting between 8 and 16 cm of rain, and it is supposed to last for another two days. So the workers can not work on the outside of the house at this point. They are supposed to be removing the ceilings today to be able to thoroughly inspect the trusses and sheathing. Hopefully not too much damage, and they can start the actual repairs very soon. Holding thumbs.

As for me, I am doing OK.

  • @lostfish (Comment 87) : I live in Maryland (Annapolis). In 2003, Isabelle tracked to our west, and we had a massive tidal surge in the Chesapeake Bay (12 feet), and it caused all kinds of damage in Annapolis. Irene tracked to our east, but was a much stronger storm than Isabelle. We did not see any flooding since the prevailing winds west of the storm are from the Northeast, then North, then Northwest, then West. We didn’t see any southerly winds, so nothing pushing water into the bay causing the tidal surge. That being said, the winds and rain were much worse than Irene, and I had a large oak tree come down on my house.

Moral of the story is ‘don’t burn your bridges’

  • The sad truth about Steyn is that we haven’t seen him do something special for 4 years. In that time he has just put on weight. Immensely talented. Its like a ferrari that is left in the garage. I think he needs to prove himself once again in the southern hemisphere before he wears the green and gold. We all know what he is capable of but he is not doing it.

  • @robdylan (Comment 92) : Steyn 12! But as I said a couple of months ago…Rassie meets up with steyn as much as possible must be some stormers deal brewing…I still feel, we have a good team-we need Joubert, Adi and Steff to step down a level(currie cup/vodacom and super rugby backup. And for god sake leave lambie at 10!!!!!!!!!!! Then let’s get some toe in the back line…we are also hanging on to Botes who is not at his best(but I love this player)…I am a bit worried about our young Props(and Marcel van der Merwe)might be a good youngster to take over from Jannie!…and what about giving Goosen a Go at 15! Moving Louis to Bench(we need more competition for position…we have a great team to build on…Skeate also needs to stand down some game time to the youngsters…Marais’s and Q. Heard roomers of small-smith going to sharks and of Johan Goosen????(From a agent in stellenbosch) Come on sharks…can this be…still a better deal than Joubert…is Mostert returning to the Tank?

I wish we could also sign Jan serfontein…he is reaLly a great prospect…but as I heard heading to the bulls like more than have of the Grey Team…

    My Backline 2012
    9.Mcloud or hoffmann and reinach
    10.Lambie
    11.Mvovo
    12.MB/Jordaan
    13.Williams/Pretoruis/Piet(joubert)
    14.JPP/sitole
    15.JPP/Goosen(louis)

I would even consider JPP on 13. (Umanga shift 2002)

  • @BoerSeun (Comment 106) :

Who is Goosen? And who is this Louis person?

    I’d be looking more at:
9 Carel Hoffmann / Charl McLeod
    10 Frederic Michalak / Jacques-Louis Potgieter
11 Lwazi Mvovo / Sibusiso Sithole
    12 Meyer Bosman
13 Adrian Jacobs / Marius Joubert
14 JP Pietersen / Odwa Ndungane
15 Patrick Lambie / Riaan Viljoen

*Keep Lambie in the position he’s spent 99% of his career at, fullback.
*Gouws Prinsloo and Paul Jordaan both need CC game-time next year. Would like to see Fred Zeilinga get some game-time as well.

Also Marcel van der Merwe is strictly a loosehead. Don’t think he’d be interested switching to the other side for the Sharks. Jannie still has many years in him, and that Dell kid might make SA U20?

Imagine we can send an excellent team overseas whilst the other equally brilliant team still battles things out in SA. Brilliant if you ask me. No more jet lag…

Lambie has not got enough toe to be a international 15 and why after his performances the last 20months move him to 15. Makes no sense at all…Adi Jacobs!!! Must be the biggest white elephant in sharks rugby history…like Chili in Bok history…the bulls are in my opinion on the right track, getting youngsters and giving the game time…province and ther Sharks need to wake up and smell the crap hands they are dealing them selfs…(JJ and Sadie)…

The Bulls give youngsters gametime? You’re a bit off there IMO. I also don’t like the situation with Jacobs at centre, but the Sharks don’t exactly have options. They could use a Jaque Fourie type centre. A really strong runner.
