Deysel cleared for Pumas

Jean Deysel has been named at open side flank in a positional switch to the Sharks back row that will take on the Pumas on Saturday. Captain Keegan Daniel moves to what many feel is his best position at the back of the scrum.

Initially under an injury cloud this week, both Deysel and prop Eugene van Staden have been included in a Sharks match 22 that shows few changes after last week’s victory at Loftus. Scrumhalf Charl McLeod is missing as a result of injury, while Jandre Marais has dropped out of the 22 entirely as the Sharks coaches have opted for an extra back on the bench this week.

Rotational changes in the pack see Alistair Hargreaves come in to start in the number 4 jersey, with Weihahn Herbst replacing van Staden as starting tight head prop. Conrad Hoffmann is elevated to the starting scrumhalf position in McLeod’s place, in the final change to the starting fifteen.

Scrumhalf Ross Cronje and utility back Jacques-Louis Potgieter return to the match 22, where they will join Adrian Jacobs as the backline reserves.

  • I am pretty sure Kyle Cooper would easily be the bulls first choice hooker right now in the currie cup.

That ex Boys High hooker Henri Bantjies is not as good as i thought he was he failed to make the step up.

Zane Botha needs to go to the gym and pick up another 10kgs he is a fiery character but rather toooo small for senior rugby at the moment.

    Willie Wepener looks over weight.

  • this selection to me highlights that we are short of options at open side flank.

Botes is on his way out, whereas Keegan is a far better number 8.

Problem is, we now have plenty of 8s and plenty of 7s, but no sixes.

Kleinhans coming through offers some hope, but I’d love to see Downey brought back in.

  • I dont see the problem with playing both Hargreaves and Skeate? They both very mobile and Plum is obviously looking to move the Pumas pack around and tire them out. Just because U are deemed to be a “5″ and a “lineout lock” doesnt mean you dont have to make tackles and hit rucks. JLP was always good in the Currie Cup so will be interestign to see what he can offer, altho 5min at the end wont tell much!

  • @Megatron (Comment 32) : megatron, deysel is a class blindside flank ,its his role as a ball carrier to get his team on the front foot (he has the ability to knock of multiple defenders so why not). Stegmann is a traditional fetch and a poor one at that, its almost as if he knows how to do what he knows he must but cant whereas keegan should not be labled as a fetch ,he has more skill and potency in his attack than most of our incumbent springbok backline. Keegan and deysel are ahead of the game as far as i am concerned

  • @Megatron (Comment 37) : Only from the idiots who seem to think Daniel is an openside flank. He isn’t even a flank, so getting outplayed by a specialist fetcher isn’t some huge feat, but to be expected.

Having Daniel, Coetzee and Deysel as a loose combo in the current configuration is just plain duh. Daniel should play at 8, with Deysel or Coetzee at 7 and Botes at openside.

I would even put Burden at 6 before Daniel. At least it would give Kyle Cooper the CC game time he deserves.

Botes hasn’t been great this year either TBH.

Bottom line is the Sharks don’t really have a quality fetcher at the moment. The only thing they can do it to change the way they approach the breakdown point and look more at counter rucking.

  • @Megatron (Comment 40) : i think the sharks dont have an out and out fetcher such as brussouw ,the only team that really do/had where wp and even then flo on a greater stage was beaten to the breakdown by more savy loose forwards. Keegan plays like a link between forwards and backs . Only people stuck in the traditional frame of mind view things as simple as openside=fetch and blindside=carrier… people who step out that frame of mind start to recognise a loosie combo as a system of parts that work in tandem with the rest of the pack and then ultimately with the way the team plays.
Things such as poor scrums have a huge effect on lf play so to say Keegan was outplayed in that game without looking at every other aspect on the day is premature and nothing more than superficial HS.

  • I trust that they play Deysel as a ball carrier for this game when on attack… He had a good game defensively last week, but had no opportunity to get some big momentum on attack, sure perhaps used as a decoy, but hopefully he can get some steam going this week… Any news on Marius Joubert, is he completely out of favour? What a poor decision / investment to give this guy a black and white jersey, he has his eye on retirement and lifestyle… Before we know it we will see Andre Snyman back there, he is a tank regular and a local afterall…

  • @Megatron – The Boks won the 2007 RWC without a fetcher. Surely by now we have learned something from that. Schalk has been playing openside for a very long time, and nobody would ever consider him a fetcher. I’m not saying a fetcher of the caliber of Brussow would not help his team, but he is not a necessity for his team to win. Balance is more important, and 12s are usually in a very good position to go after turnover ball.

  • @Culling Song (Comment 62) : Exactly, People may have had issues with Jake White, but one thing I agree with completely is his theory that everyone on the team should have the ability to effect a turnover at the breakdown. If everyone has the ability then whomever the second person is to the tackle point can immediately go for the ball. It just happens that the opensider and 12 are generally that person after first phase ball. For all subsequent phases, it matters not the number one wears on the back, whomever is the second person to the tackle point should look to get their hands on the ball.

  • @Megatron (Comment 57) : your ideas are based on the anecdotal you have fabricated becuase of your own prejudice and smart ass antics to piss us off. That lions game Cilliers was motm if i remember correctly ,his impact on the day made sure our loosies had their heads down pushing while his where just bound ,makes all the difference . Yes Minnie was effective at the breakdown ,but what you are hinting at is that it is the sole role of an openside flank to compete at the bd ,seriously?! I hate to say it but that sounds like the diagnosis of some one who has never played the game post high school ,sounds like some one who sits on the couch with a black and white sense of the game…an un realistic view of the game

  • @Dancing Bear (Comment 69) : At least it’s two more weeks to go until the next monthly gathering, so I reckon I should be able to pull myself together by then. Good to give my immune system a goal to work towards.

  • How on earth did we manage to win last year’s Currie Cup without a recognized fetcher? C’mon Mega, you usually troll with more finesse. We get it – you don’t rate Keegs. Let’s find a more interesting topic to disagree on.

  • @Pokkel (Comment 75) : Dude, you have me deeply worried. Yesterday I find a person of the female persuasion posting on Supersport using your avatar. This morning, on FB, I see you “like” Heinrich Brussow.

  • @Dancing Bear (Comment 61) : rubbish man, Jake got OWNED 49 – 0 by australia playing JOE VAN NIEKERK at 6, it was a DISASTER, george smith and later on phil waugh killed us and the boks finished the game with 30% possession in that game!

to say the Boks won the WC without a fetcher is a bit glib, considering we played samoa, fiji, tonga, usa, england, argentina and england again! none of those sides bar england had EVER beaten the boks so to say we won the WC against teams who themselves were not ranked higher than 8th is nonsensical!

  • @Talent (Comment 70) :  you can make your own assumptions of me and then knock them down as much you like, they don’t define my knowledge of the game whatsoever or how far i played it.

cilliers had a great game indeed but he wasn’t the sole influence in the lions domination of the breakdown. which of the other sharks loosies are even adept on the deck? i saw wikus van heerden pilfer and win a penalty after standing up to anything the sharks could throw at him.

sharks current loosies are even trumped by bismarck in terms of deck work and they’re not juggernauts in counter-rucking either.
