Sharks under 21 flyhalf Willie du Plessis has decided to continue his career with Tukkies in Pretoria.

Du Plessis, who grew up in the capital and attended Affies, joined the Sharks Academy straight after school and has spent the last three years playing under 19 and under 21 rugby for the Sharks. Despite starting the 2011 season as first-choice flyhalf for the Sharks juniors, du Plessis has found himself on the outside as the season progresses, with under 19 players in Fred Zeilinga and Paul Jordaan preferred in the flyhalf position.

Du Plessis has already left Durban to move back to Pretoria and will be available to represent the Blue Bulls at under 21 level this season if selected, before moving on to the Tukkies Varsity Cup side in 2012 (and potential further Bulls exposure).

Wilie has always been a great team man who has given his all, both in the black and white of the Sharks and the black and red of Collegians. We’re going to miss him and would like to wish him all the best for the future.

  • @Muzi (Comment 5) : I don’t think Willie has a Bulls contract. The article says he is going to play for TUKS so will then probably have to play his way into that Bulls under 21 side.

  • @Muzi (Comment 9) : He is a good player but I doubt he will be able to unseat Roos. That under 21 side is quite settled as well, not so?

  • @war1 (Comment 6) : the clue was “back to Pretoria”…. if you were thinking about one of the DuP brothers, that would surely rule them out?

Seriously, I never even considered that it might cause confusion!

  • @robdylan (Comment 12) : Rob i think its a smart move dude the bulls are playing musical chairs with their young flyhalves.

  • @robdylan (Comment 14) : Marnitz Boshoff would fit perfectly for the sharks he is a running flyhalf.

  • @robdylan (Comment 14) : ok, I’m getting confused… he played a CC game or two for the Pumas last month… so how can he still be eligible for the Bulls at u21 level if he’s playing for the Pumas at senior level?

  • @Muzi (Comment 16) : my advice to Willie was to try Tuks and the Bulls… while his style maybe didn’t quite fit in at the Sharks, he is a hugely consistent player who would do well at the Bulls… and a consistent flyhalf is really going to stand out in their junior ranks at the moment.

    I think he’ll go far.

  • @robdylan (Comment 20) : Spot on brummer…boshoff and fouche are not consistent enough i have not watched du plessis play but from what i’ve heard so far its what the bulls need.Poor Dunlop should have been the bulls currie cup flyhalf.

  • @robdylan (Comment 13) : Apparently he was loaned to the Pumas and played one game but was called back almost immediately when they realised they needed him for the under 21s.
