DHL Western Province travel to Loftus Versfeld this weekend to take on the Blue Bulls but one has to wonder if they will have a team to send.
It was confirmed yesterday that regular starting loosehead prop Wicus Blaauw has joined the list of players who are out for the entire season. Blaauw and SA 7s player Steven Hunt left the field injured during WPs 49 – 21 victory over the Platinum Leopards at Newlands, a scoreline which suggests that Western Province had an easy victory whereas the truth is that the Leopards had them on the ropes early in the first half and at one point lead 14-3.
WP have been under some sort of injury plague since the Super Rugby season, the plague being especially hard on the flyhalves, a problem that even saw Lions discard Earl Rose flying in to join the squad on the overseas tour, yes you remember that?Earl Rose played for the Stormers this year, tell me how desperate YOU would be before you called up The Rose into your squad even if it was your sunday touchies game on the beach.
The flyhalf crisis currently sees WP favourite under achieving pivot Isma-eel Dollie in the hot seat, a good 6 years later than he would have liked but as the way things stand he is probably going to have his second start at Loftus.(He wasn’t bad on Saturday, he wasn’t good either but he never threw his name away)
Besides flyhalf the injuries have been in some crucial positions robbing WP from really developing any settled combinations, props, hookers, flanks, flyhalves and centres have fallen this year , who knows what the loose trio will look like on Saturday.
My advice to any club players in the Western Cape, ok wait, my advice to anyone who has turned out for Maties recently is to keep your bags packed and your boots polished as theres a good chance you good get a call to go to Loftus this weekend.
PS. If you are a flyhalf make sure your medical aid is paid upTweet
