Johnson College Rovers will be taking a strong squad down to Stellenbosch next week to attempt to defend the National Club Championship title they won in fine style last year.
Bolstered by a number of returnees from last year’s team, including victorious captain Chris Jordaan, back after a stint with the Pumas, the side also contains a number of current Sharks Currie Cup squad members, in Ross Cronje, Julian Redelinghuys, Sabelo Nhlapo, Daniel Adongo, Rosco Speckman and Mark Richards. Two former Sharks stalwarts in Nikolai Blignaut and Sangoni “Mox” Mxoli are also in the mix.
Perhaps the biggest surprise, though, is the inclusion of former Springbok centre Gcobani Bobo, back in Durban after leaving four years ago to join first Western Province and late the Newcastle Falcons.
There’s a whole host of Vodacom Cup players in the ranks as well, with scrumhalf Anton Verster, flyhalf Chris Micklewood, centre Jerome Pretorius and Guy Cronje having played at that level for the Sharks XV. Hooker Mark Goosen is a Kearsney College boy returning to his Durban roots this year after playing junior rugbby for Western Province and Varsity Cup for UCT.
Chris Micklewood will captain the side.

@Pablo Dinero (Comment 2) :
@jovner (Comment 3) : Better get the pool ready…
where is Howard Mnisi? is he still in Durban?
@Megatron (Comment 7) : Plays for Harlequins…well last i saw anyway. He is a big guy but average hands…
@SheldonK (Comment 8) : thanks, that can be taught, it seems like the Sharks let go of both howard and vulindlu because of this “average hands” story.
how about contracting the much vaunted sheryl calder to work with these boys (if it is not already happening)
@Megatron (Comment 9) : I agree that u can teach good handling, but not when the guys are at the top. It would mean another part of their game wud have to drop in order for them to be able to pass and catch better. They should have worked on these skills wen younger. Calder can help but not to any significant degree.
@Megatron (Comment 7) : I was under the impression Howard had gone back to the EC… might be wrong though.
Let me see if I still have him on BBM
@robdylan (Comment 11) : What club does Zuks play for?
@Ben (Comment 12) : Rovers, but he’s been out injured forever…. only started playing again 3 weeks ago
Yo Rob. How’s Mickelwoods form recently ? Is he doing the kicks? Quite chuffed his captain. He showed so much of promise when he was young.
@robdylan (Comment 11) : howard Mnisi is not from the Eastern Cape.
@Megatron (Comment 15) : in that case, he probably didn’t go back there and I’m talking out of my ass
just went back and looked at the last message he sent me… he said he was going to be concentrating on his studies… didn’t say where that would be taking place
