Sharks make plenty changes for Cheetahs clash

The Sharks team to face the Cheetahs has finally been released, with a few surprising changes but nothing that our investigative journalist Rob hasn’t predicted already.

In the backline, we see Stefan Terblanche shift to fullback to make space for obviously fit-again Marius Joubert in the midfield, where he will join his ex-Cheetah teammate Meyer Bosman. This all means that Louis Ludik drops down to the bench.

Plum has finally heard the calls to rest Marcell Coetzee, and his replaced him with the on form Jacques Botes in straight swop. Anton Bresler is Hargreaves’ new lock partner after Skeate was ruled out through an injury.

Eugene van Staden comes in at tighthead for Wiehahn Herbst, who falls out of the match 22 altogether, with Julian Redelinghuys coming onto the bench to cover the front row. Jan Andre Marais is back on the bench to cover the second row. Jacques-Louis Potgieter stays at home as he falls off the bench to accommodate Ludik.

The Sharks:

15. Stefan Terblanche
14. Sibusiso Sithole
13. Marius Joubert
12. Meyer Bosman
11. Lwazi Mvovo
10. Frederic Michalak
9. Conrad Hoffmann
8. Keegan Daniel (Captain)
7. Jean Deysel
6. Jacques Botes
5. Alistair Hargreaves
4. Anton Bresler
3. Eugene van Staden
2. Craig Burden
1. Dale Chadwick

Replacements
16. Kyle Cooper
17. Julian Redelinghuys
18. Jan Andre Marais
19. Marcell Coetzee
20. Ross Cronje
21. Adrian Jacobs
22. Louis Ludik

  • Sorry, forgot to mention, Herbst has a hip injury and that is why he is not in the match 22.

  • Im concerned with Eugene starting ,great in the loose but gives away penalties at scrum time and with Johan Goosen 60 something kicks it could be bad selection. Locks are a tad light ,really wish jm was in there . Worried aout 13 and in stef you dont loose anything at all when dropping Ludick .

  • Atleast Conrad Hoffmann is finally getting some consistent game time he will eventually be the sharks first choice scrumhalf.
He is more talented than macleod hoffman will be a bok in my honest opinion he is similar to ruan pienaar.

Marcell Coetzee has regressed abit like arno botha he will have to hold some tackle bags.

The reality is that potgieter sure gives 100% and he makes tackles BUT he does not pose any danger to opponents.

The dude gets bullied by backline players.

I will stand by what i said in the bulls website WE NEED ALBERTS OR DEYSEL then the bulls will dominate the collision points again.

The game has evolved the steggmans and potgieters of this world are getting outclassed and bullied by young loose forwards like marcell coetzee.

  • @Letgo (Comment 63) :

Marius Joubert has more of the things you want from a centre. Plumtree is a Kiwi coach. He’s not going to select a smaller guy who makes his tackles but isn’t exactly an in-your-face type at centre.

Adi Jacobs may be a good impact player, but nothing more. Joubert is simply a stronger runner and better defensively. If he can cut out the mistakes he’d be a great addition.

  • @hendrikp (Comment 67) : Okay so you also think Marius Joubert is a better player than Jacobs. Now I don’t understand why you and Plum thinks this is true.

Adi doesn’t have to be bigger than Joubert. He plays to the advantage line. And gives the ball to his players in space. Joubert doesn’t even know how to pass, let alone create space for a player before he passes. So he’s bigger, big whoop, he’ll just run harder into the defender than other players do.

But maybe the Bosman Joubert combo will work. I don’t know. It just doesn’t look great on our team sheet. You would hope that when stefan moves to the back a guy like Lindique would be given a shot or at least Adi who has been great for us in that position over the years. Now we have another, never was that good, won’t be playing in a year or so player, stuffed into that position.

I just don’t like the trend.

And I don’t think the player is better than what we’ve had before him.

  • @Letgo (Comment 77) :

I think Marius Joubert has more ‘upside’ then Adi Jacobs. It’s not as simple as who looks good out there. It’s a case of defensive strategy, running lines etc.

Jacobs has good footwork. Outside of that he is a weak player.

Joubert, if he cuts out the mistakes, has more upside in that he’s a strong runner, can be a good defender (regardless of his current form that you lot keep pointing out), an in-your-face type player. You can do more things with him.

Adi Jacobs looks good on the highlights sometimes. But I wouldn’t trust him as anything more then an impact player. Marius Joubert has been poor, but again… he’s got more upside.

Don’t you think you are referring more to a 12 than a 13? I agree to an extent but those aren’t his strongest suits imo.

Kind of getting bored with this one  If Adi does that then maybe he should get the 12 jersey? Problem there is 12′s normally have to make about a dozen or more tackles a game these days, and they’d definitely target Jacobs.

I don’t really want to get into the whole argument about him being too small because it upsets a lot of people, but when you don’t have the physical attributes, you’re going to struggle regardless of how good your technique is.

I’ve got to roll. Have a nice day all!!!

Dude, with all due respect, labelling Adi a weak player is just ridiculous.

As for Marius Joubert, he is finished. He might have a good game here or there but he ain’t gonna add much value to the Sharks, trust me on this.

  • @hendrikp (Comment 84) : May I aske when you last saw jacobs play a full 80 or atleast start at outside center? But I do think Plum sees him as an impact player and I would argue that is his best role in the team at the moment

  • @hendrikp (Comment 82) : I think it’s a good sign if you look good on the highlights…But I don’t think we’re going to come to an agreement with this, so lets just leave it at that.

I’ve never rated Joubert and I’ve always thought Adi brings something extra to our attack, especially our attack, because I’m tired of defending.

    @Pokkel (Comment 92) :

Wrong. Ray Mordt was the first to do it in 1981.

Don’t think we’ll agree on Adi no. Hopefully Joubert comes through though. He’s a good strong centre when at his best.

He was a Springbok winger during the 1981 tour of New Zealand. Google it and you’ll see the chaos the tour created

During the game that he scored his hat-trick there was actually a plane dropping flower-bombs and flares onto the field.

Jeez, talk about wild speculation! No offence, but I’d rather trust the highlights package than an unsubstantiated opinion. Adi has performed at Super Rugby and even International level in the last 2 seasons; what has Marius done?

  • I know it is easy to jump on HendrikP for his view on Adi, but if we, just for a moment stop defending our point of view, we may realize that he is giving us some insight into how Plum may view Adi. While I don’t agree with him that Joubert is a better 13, I do believe that Plum’s view on Adi is very similar to HendikP’s view. And that may explain why we see so little of Adi on the field in any of Plum’s teams. Let’s also not forget that the Boks also chose not to play Adi much over the past couple of years, so the Bok selector’s view is not all that different from Plum’s. Maybe we are wrong and they are right?
