Sharks looked like a pub team

Sharks coach John Plumtree was in a funny mood after the match against Griquas, where the Sharks managed to score five points yes, but did so in a way that does not instil much confidence as the Currie Cup reaches the business end.

Plum started the post match interviews by jokingly asking us to keep it short and to remember that the boys scored 5 points. The grinning coach soon turned sour as he was asked his thoughts on the game:

“Mistakes, basic errors, missed touches, you know, there was just one thing after another, we look like we don’t have any confidence and the big players are letting us down. Really hard to watch, but its sad because we are better than that. We are missing a fair bit of grunt up front in terms of getting go forward and that’s making in hard for us to play. Basic errors are inexcuseable at this level.”

When Plum was asked whether he could sense that the boys were up for the match, “We really had a good week this week, trying to get over the Cheetahs game by training well. I gave them quite a bit of direction this week, setting out targets we want to achieve. But when your kick off goes into touch and two mistakes after that, we put ourselves under pressure. Clearly there are some minds that are elsewhere and we need to do some soul searching. Not sure how we are going to get the go forward because it looks like we dont have the carriers to get us over the advantage line”

When asked about Burden’s injury, and whether further hooker back up will be brought in, “I thought Kyle was the best forward on the park tonight, I thought he was outstanding. I have a lot of faith in him, obviously there was a bit of pressure at line out time though.”

I asked his thoughts on the amount of breakdown ball the Sharks managed to secure through Botes and Deysel, “We stole quite a bit of their ball tonight, Botes was on the ball and Keegan and Jean backed him up. We made some defensive errors again, the harder we are trying the worse it is getting. There was general frustration in the group and when the lights went out, it did us a bit of a favour. We regrouped and played better in the 10 minutes before half time.”

Asked about the injuries in the match to Bresler and Ludik, “We aren’t sure yet, but Anton looked to hurt his ankle and Ludik got stood on, so there might be a broken bone, which is worrying. I put the bench out as weren’t playing very well, but I was stressing at the end as there is nobody left with 10 to play. With a prop playing flank and a loosie on the wing, we looked like a pub team.”

Asked about the amount of injuries to the team and where he will be looking to bring players back, “Yeah, we have lost Kankowski and now Burden, the front row is having a long season with Dale Chadwick playing a lot of rugby, and it looks like Wiehahn Herbst is carrying a groin injury that he has worsened tonight, our stocks are getting pretty low. These guys are going to have to find something to carry them through to the end of the season.”

When a comment was made about Adi Jacobs and the impact he had coming off the bench, Plum was asked if he will consider starting him, “I will have to consider starting him, we are at that point now, and he is so good off the bench and we saw that again tonight, and Meyer going to ten was good as well. We have to look at selection, what we are serving up at the moment is just not good enough”

  • So chances of seeing Bosman at 10 with Jacobs and Joubert outside? Wishful thinking maybe. So Hadebe will be on the bench with probably Marais as lock cover. Besides Herbst,Chadwick and Van Staden who is next in line?

  • @SheldonK (Comment 1) :

    Julian Redelinghuys I think..

I think Plum will start Adi outside Meyer with Fred and McLeod, but will give them a run in the second half, with Fred off, Meyer at 10 and Adi 12.

Redelinghuys is not too bad, I think he will fir in well.

As for Adi vs Sadie, I think we try it let the player show his mettle, to be honest

  • My question is “If Dale has played lots of rugby this year, why not use Nhlapo whom you fetched from Tuks to be a Super Rugby cover?”. He has been in the system for long, and knows the business, also played superb at club rugby level & Vodacom Cup. Another player is Mnisi, this lad should be way ahead of Williams,Lindeque & Jordaan when it comes to young backs being introduced.

  • @Le Punk (Comment 10) : I agree with you regarding Sabs…. nothing against Howard, but I’m not convinced he’s ready to step up yet.
