19 year old Cheetah flyhalf Johan Goosen received the Player of the month award for the month of September. The coach of the month award goes to the Jimmy Stonehouse of the Puma’s after punching above their weight every now and then and also getting a surprise victory over the Griquas.

Naka Drotske decided to give the young man a start ahead of another former u21 SA player, Sias Ebersohn, and he grabbed the chance with both hands. Goosen has become one of the most talked about players in the Currie Cup with some pretty scintillating play, breaking lines almost at will, distributing with ease and also contributing with the boot, surely the future looks bright for this lad?

Keegan Daniel was another player in contention for the award, while Naka Drotske and John Mitchell were nominations in the coach category.

  • Well done Johan Goosen.

Johan has definitely added to the excitement of this weekends clash between the 2 in-form Currie Cup teams.

Both Goosen and Jantjies played very well against the Sharks recently, so it’s going to be interesting to watch the match up unfold.

  • If Lambie plays mostly at flyhalf next season, I’m happy to exclude Johan Goosen from my “wishes” for now, and put Taute in at the back.

Can’t believe I wanted Lambie at fullback  Namibia was a bit of a wake-up call.

  • I still dont think the quality of a player should be judged in his 1st year at the top. We will see how he fares in the next year or so when teams get video footage and become accumstomed to his traits. The best players keep evolving and providing something new. So the jury is still out…
