Province receive good and bad news

Western Province coach Allister Coetzee received the good with the bad today when it came to his injured players. It was confirmed that Heinrich Steyl had broken both bones in his leg and will be out of action for nine months, ruling him out until the second half of SupeRugby 2012.

More bad news is that winning try scorer, Dewaldt Duvenhage, injured his ankle late in the game, and he will be given as much time as he needs to recover ahead of the Lions clash this weekend.

On a positive note, two players who started on the bench this week after carrying niggling injuries, Johan Sadie and Conrad Jantjes, both trained today and both will be fit to start at Coca Cola Park. JC Kritzinger, who left the field against the Sharks clutching his shoulder, is also fit and will be considered for the weekend.

Players returning to the training field this morning include Nic Groom, Demetri Catrakilis and Nick Koster, and all three are expected to be available for selection against the Lions. Coetzee will be particularly pleased about these three players, especially as Duvenhage could miss this weekend’s match and Groom being available to fill the gap.

  • Nah seriously, need to see injury results, the Schreuder/Cronje combo doesn’t do much at all for me. I still would rather have Dollie, more consistent with his kicking and not as erratic with his general play. Cronje has been a disappointment for me, sadly.

  • @molly (Comment 4) : Cronje has been utter crap for every game that he has played for WP/Stormers . I don’t know why everyone is complaining that we let him move on to the Bulls.Good riddance.

  • I think province could take it. It seems like the Lions are showing some inexperience when it comes to this stage of the competition. They find themselves in a somewhat unfamiliar position of being in control of their destiny. Not a bad position to be in at all, but maybe this is adding some pressure that they won’t be used to.

I also feel like they reached their peak about two or three weeks ago and are slowly backsliding. They would have to lift themselves again to win both their last games, keep top spot and give themselves a realistic opportunity of winning the CC for the first time in 12 years, if I’m not mistaken.

I’m not saying they can’t do it. Just saying that it will take everything they’ve got. They’ve been playing well this season and really are one of the teams who deserve it.
