No pressure whatsoever

I was shocked to learn that SARU’s commercial manager, Andy Marinos, was quoted as saying that should the Boks be eliminated from the World Cup this weekend, the players would be able to join their unions and bolster squads ahead of the final weekend of round robin matches.

Now this is something that seems to happen on an annual basis, but this year, being the ‘watered-down’ Currie Cup and all, I thought that we will finally get a chance to see the youngsters play in the play-offs, proving their mettle.

The sad reality behind the Springbok quarter final game against Australia on Sunday morning, is that there is every chance that we might lose the match, as hard as that is to accept. Should the unthinkable happen, this would have a major effect on the final stages of the Currie Cup.

The first reality that hits is that a team that has been performing so well throughout the competition, the Lions, will only get back one player, whilst the teams that have been performing so much poorer, will be bolstered by multiple players.

This could end in heart break for most Lions supporters, whilst being a gross injustice to a team that has lead the pack for all twelve weeks of the tournament so far.

Should the Boks win this weekend, which I suspect is very possible, they will secure a further two weeks in New Zealand, as even losing semi finalists play in the final weekend for the bronze medal. That would eliminate any Springbok involvement in the Currie Cup, which I think most of us would prefer.

So Springboks, not only do you have the weight of expectation of an entire country on your shoulders, but the fairness of the Currie Cup lies in your hands. Moer Hulle!!

  • I see this differently. If the Lions weren’t so shit, they’d have more Boks. I feel nothing about them being ‘robbed’ of a currie cup title this year, if it comes to that.

  • For the boks to come back at such a late hour would undermine the efforts of the unions who have taken this years watered down cc as an opportunity to blood their youngsters and those unions who used it as a building bridge for their future. If the sharks do throw in their big guns it will be in bad taste imo (or any other union) but that being said this is the professional era and unions could use that excuse to hide behind

  • My feeling is Frans Steyn should seek a deal with the Cheetahs if he’s desperate to return to SA. I think he’ll be happy there and they’re looking good ahead of SR 2012 – a versatile back and maybe even a scrummy would come in handy in Bloem.

  • I hope the Boks are still in the RWC after this weekend but if they aren’t, I don’t see the harm of them coming home to play in the CC. It will bolster the CC’s image and probably put more bums in seats at prices that the Unions wud like to charge for playoff games.

However I’m not sure where the Boks will get any motivation from. We might see a lot of deflated Hargreaves running around, so even if the Lions only have 2 back, my feeling is their homeground advantage should be enough to get them to the final.

  • @beet (Comment 24) : There is a little more to the Alistair Hargreaves situation than meets the eye. The motivation will probably be an issue but trying to fit players into squads that have been together for thirteen weeks without said Boks may prove to be the biggest problem.

  • @war1 (Comment 26) : @war1 (Comment 25) : Thanks for the feedback.

I honestly have no idea about Frans’ contractual obligations. I was just responding to what I read on these SW threads. I incorrectly assumed he wanted to return to SA with immediate effect and was shopping around.

I didn’t mean to knock Alistair but I got the feeling that not making the RWC squad has had an impact on his mental approach for now. For the past few years it seemed like there was a plan in place to groom him to be an international player with the RWC in mind. Things don’t always work out as planned. But again I’ll admit that I could be far off the real underlying reason for his deterioration in form.
