Lions pick a B-team

The prospect of Butch James being included on the bench for this weekend’s match against the Sharks does little to disguise the fact that coach John Mitchell doesn’t care all that much about the result. With the visitors already having sewn up first place on the log, they’re fielding a weakened side against the Currie Cup holders in the interest of staying fresh for the semi final next weekend.

With the Sharks potentially able to call on as many as 8 returning Bok players this weekend, with two other stalwarts in Ryan Kankowski and Craig Burden also set to return from injury, the Lions’ decision to bracket James (their only eligible Bok) with Alwyn Hollenbach on the bench looks unlikely to even up the contest very much. Regular flyhalf Elton Jatjies has been picked on a bench containing no specialist scrumhalf, with Burton Francis starting in the number 10 jersey.

Further changes see Bandise Maku, Pat Cilliers, Franco van der Merwe, Derick Minnie and Michael Killian all benched for the game, with Dylan Des Fountain coming in to start at centre, while Wikus van Heerden also makes a return to the side after missing out through injury.

Lions:
15 Jaco Taute, 14 Deon van Rensburg, 13 Dylan des Fountain, 12 Doppies la Grange, 11 James Kamana, 10 Burton Francis, 9 Michael Bondesio, 8 Warren Whiteley, 7 Joshua Strauss (captain), 6 Jaco Kriel, 5 Michael Rhodes, 4 Wikus van Heerden, 3 Jacobie Adriaanse, 2 Martin Bezuidenhout, 1 JC Janse van Rensburg.

Substitutes: 16 Bandise Maku, 17 Patric Cilliers, 18 Franco van der Merwe, 19 Derick Minnie, 20 Elton Jantjies, 21 Butch James, 22 Michael Killian.

  • It may be considered a B side but it’s still a very decent squad. Should be a tough contest.

  • Replacing average players with more average players… not exactly a weak team.

    Lions will win.

  • The Sharks have all the motivation on their side while the Lions will just be going thru the motions.

From a mental approach the Sharks have already won this game, it should really just be about the crucial BP. Can a team that’s struggled to play as a team for a number of weeks now score 4 tries? Going on the evidence of the home game against the Griquas a few weeks back, the answer has to be YES!

  • I said The Lions would send a B team, a great time for the Sharks to slowly re introduce their Boks to the CC, they will have jetlag so better to play them of the bench

Dude, seriously, its really too early to start drinking mate!

The Sharks are gonna klap the Lions.

A full strength Sharks vs Lions B team. Sharks also need to win to ensure they qualify for a home semi final. There’s no way the Sharks are gonna lose this one!!

  • The times have changed..never have i seen the lions sending a b team in any game..haha..

If we were supporting the bulls or cheetahs i would say them by 20 with bonus point but its the sharks..they couldnt even beat a b team province team..but miracles do happen..and a home semi is a week away

  • @wpw (Comment 18) :

Was under the impression that they wouldn’t use any of their Springboks.

If that’s the case, the Sharks will beat them easily.

Lions won’t put nearly as much points on the board.

  • @vanmartin (Comment 24) : well, not lose as such. if WP fail to get a bonus and the Bulls beat the Leoaprds by about 100 points, then it will put the Bulls through.
