Come on fans – fill the Tank!

Tickets for this weekend’s Currie Cup semi-final between the Sharks and the Cheetahs have gone on sale and we can’t emphasise strongly enough just how important it is for Sharks fans to ensure a good turnout at Kings Park this weekend.

There’s been a distinct lack of atmosphere at Sharks home games this Currie Cup, due in no small part to attendance that has regularly been on the low side – in fact, I’d be surprised if we’ve yet seen a crowd in excess of 20 000 attend a Currie Cup game at Kings Park this season and while I’ve heard every excuse under the sun for opting not to attend – the Sharks are playing badly, it costs too much, kick-off is too early, kick-off is too late, I need to wash my hair, etc – it’s time to put all those excuses away and come out in force to support the boys on Saturday, when they’ll need their fans most.

Let’s not forget that a home semi-final was looking distinctly off-the-cards over the last few weeks, as the rampant Cheetahs began their surge up the log. The Sharks put in the sort of performance of which their fans can be truly proud last weekend, claiming the right to be at home for the first knock-out in the process, and now it up to the fans to repay the team for that effort – by donning the black and white and showing up at the Tank in their thousands.

I’m sure I don’t need to remind anyone of what happened the lat time the Sharks faced the Cheetahs in a Currie Cup semi… that was 2009 and while Durbanites stayed away, opting to rather save their dosh for the final the following week, the Cheetahs sensed weakness and pounced, knocking the Sharks out of the competition in a half-full stadium. There will be none of that this time around, though – as the Sharks finished second in 2011, the final will take place at Coca Cola Park in Johannesburg, unless, of course, the Lions lose to Western Province in the second semi. Any Sharks supporters thinking that they can sit back this weekend and rather go to the final the week afterwards is not only delusional, but also implicitly helping to ensure that the Sharks will not be in that final anyway.

Come on guys – get out there and fill that stadium this weekend. The game kicks off at 14h30 on Saturday (plenty of time for a celebratory braai afterwards, in other words) and tickets cost R150,

  • Not just Durbanites guys. All fans within reasonable driving distance need to make the effort. This includes the North nItalian Mobsters Franshark, Pokkel, Culling Song and Mama etc etc.

The Vrystaat are not going to be pushovers. They are coming to Durban to jol. It will be a good game. You have to watch it in 3D.

  • There has been hardly an promoting for this game, no billboards ,no radio or tv ads, nothing! I think the only place saying how much tickets are is Sharksworld. So with all this “promoting’ does the NRU really think they gonna fill the stadium? Ive been at every Sharks home game this year but im fairly certain that there wont be more than 20 000 there this weekend, if that! There is a thought to making tickets cheaper, but to be honest if tickets were R50 they wouldnt fill the stadium. Its just a matter of too much rugby during the year and by the end of the year the public dont have that disposable income as they saving for Xmas and holidays etc.

Yes yes meganuts. PE sold out. With rugby back in PE, its a bit like taking water to the desert, huge demand because of the lack of games in the city recently.

With the Sharks, its a bit like taking sand to the desert, we’ve seen it all and had so many semis and finals recently, that its sometimes a bit too much.

Game of the year at Eliis was against the Sharks in the Final Super15 game of the season.

I guess any Shark game is fun at Ellis Park cause you lot are all up here ..
